Tips, shortcuts, and handy tidbits from the Nokia N900 User Guide

Couple more shortcuts:

Ctrl+Shift+P = Screenshot Ctrl+Shift+X = Opens X terminal (if you have it in apps folder). IIRC there are more 3 key combos but it’s been a while since I tested it at Nokia’s Helsinki fagshipstore.

I’m really thinking about getting this N900 with QWERTY keyboard because the french layout is clearly a problem (it doesn’t have the four arrows without using the blue button for example). Have you tried to enter foreign letters such accentued letter? What are the shortcut to get an é ou an ô?

Smart dialing is a bit too slow as I tried it. And you need to be in idle screen; won’t work in menus.

What is the reason for browser history?? Totally unnecessary feature. Just normal “back” would be enough. That browser history also opens up a bit too slow.

Also now when the device is so close to real computer, I’d like to see more keys on HW. Tab(!!!) + numbers row. Or a version of this particular device without a keyboard.

Anyhow! This is REALLY impressive device! I will get myself one of these for sure. And when it really hits the streets, the open source community will make it even better.

can some one help me to enter the “insert” symbol on my nokia n900. it is part of my password and i cant set up the account with out that. i found it in the virtual keyboard but the symbol only high lights. it doesnt actually enter on the text field

To add accents to characters using the physical keyboard, you can hit (blue arrow) then sym(bol), select the accent, then type the character to apply it to. To get just the accent character itself, press space as the 2nd key. So, â versus ^.

After playing with it for a week+, I love this device.

heres a good keyboard shortcut while using the browser.

Fn + backspace = back

Not sure if its called Fn, but it’s the blue arrow button, over the shift button, under the ctrl button.

and yes, it directly goes back, instead going through the history.

someone just told me its only “backspace” lol.

Anyone knows a shortcut to go silent mode? In any other phone (well this is not precisely a phone) it is done by pressing #.

I am unable to find a way to create user groups and apply ring tones for different groups. Similarly there should be someway to arrange the SMS’s so that I can automatically send some of them to different folders or discard them to junks.

A PPPoE dialer and a dial up system is also missing.

Follow these on your N900 and then you can find a plugin for Yahoo Messenger support to add the service to the IM client. I believe the name starts with accounts-plugins so look towards the top of the application list.

Maemo 5 update ….003 . I execute the update on my phone, it started normally, downloaded the software, installation started, the screen went Black, the phone restarted but the screen never came back again. I can here the sounds when touching the screen or pressing a key on keyboard, but if i cannot see what is going on on the screen then how I can put my pin and use my phone? Any ideas?

You must download the application for computer: Nokia map uploader. After that, you connect your phone and launch Map loader from computer AND Map from the N900. You can choose which map you want to download and put into the N900 (like a ‘normal’ GPS, tom-tom, garmin, …)

It’s really usefull when you don’t want to pay roamnig !!

Which will be great when Ovi applications start supporting the N900 which is not yet, at least those downloaded via a PC in the UK.

Hello All i bought new N900 it is really very nice but i cant find friendly user guide i have some problems such as i dont see the missed calls and new messages in the screen when i touch the screen to turn it on also the first touch doesn’t turn it on and im wondering if this tyep of mobiles support assigning ringing tons to the contacts or not i really like this mobile but i feel very sad coz i can use it perfectly

Great page, easiest to read among the many IMO. Can anybody tell how to get the “browser history swipe” to work. Can’t get it. Swiping left to right works fine for me in the browser (brings up cursor), should be included perhaps?

You need to download an app called “Petrovich” which I think is in one of the standard catalogues, which allows you to browse all your files/folders and send via bluetooth.

I’ve tried the circle zooming but can’t get it to work. Did you manage to upload a video of it yet?

Hey dudes…….most of us see the web in landscape mode……..but you can turn in to the protrait mode also here is the trick……Click ctrl+shift+O and you will see your landscape web page turn to potrait form.

does any one have a clue how to group contacts in N900 – just like in other mobile phones?

I found out the flight mode is accessible via the menu by pushing the power button for a short moment. (undocumented and hidden like many more important things) shortcuts like the “Hold Shift and up/down arrow” dont work on some keyboard layouts. I would have to use the Fn key too because the up/down keys are only in keyboard overlay mode, wherewith such shortcuts do not work!
