Thinking of a Nokia Astound? Visit your local T-Mobile store

I was chatting with Dieter and told him I was quite pleased with the short time I spent with the Nokia Astound and that I was thinking of picking one up for the site. He gave me the thumbs up and was going to get one for me to use, but I decided to just visit a local store to see what I could work out with the expectation I would pay the full $299.99 (before 9.5% tax) no contract price. I went to my local T-Mobile store in Federal Way and was shocked by what happened next.

I went into the store and there were six employees standing around with only one other customer being helped. Richard asked me kindly what I would like and I told him I wanted to buy a Nokia Astound off contract. He told me they had them in stock and he would see what he could do for me. He said he thought he could work out something in the system because there were some special offers on accessories. After logging into the system and trying some different things, he worked out a deal where he was able to give me the following gear and still cut my total price out the door to $255.08 that included the 9.5% sales tax.

  • Nokia Astound (shown as only $99.99 on the receipt)
  • Jabra Stone 2 Bluetooth headset ($129.99 down to $90.99)
  • MicroUSB car charger ($29.99 down to $20.99)
  • Nokia Astound 2-pack screen protector ($14.99 down to $10.49)
  • Nokia Astound black gel skin case ($14.99 down to $10.49)

I was amazed by what he was able to get for me while still saving me just over $73. My account stayed the same, my excellent family plan remained untouched, and I ended up saving money and walking out with some great accessories. If my head wasn’t lost in the clouds as he was handing me all this gear I would have asked for a 32GB microSD card instead of the Bluetooth headset since I need those more than headsets.

If you are considering the Nokia Astound, you may want to visit your local store and see if they have any special offers for you as well. Richard mentioned that the future AT&T purchase had something to do with his ability to offer me all of these accessories and knock a couple hundred off of the phone price too.

I put my SIM card into my new Nokia Astound and plan to use it as my primary device for a while and create a Guide page for the site. I already like that I can use Swype in portrait orientation and the email client is MUCH better!

Wow. Good deal. Think they would do anything for att customers? I’ll give it a shot. Glad to hear the email client is better. That’s one of the reasons I despised the N8 and E7. Do yahoo emails come through instantly and regularly on a consistent basis? Thanks

How come you decided to buy the astound when you have the N8? It seems a step down.

My T-Mobile store insists ALL no contract phones are full retail and there are NO deals on the Astound – even when I showed the sales person the article above. What is the formula for getting the price??

James,

While the camera is lower resolution, the Astound has nearly the same specs as the N8, but it comes with a later version of the Symbian software that is worth it IMHO. I now have a QWERTY portrait keyboard and Swype in portrait, a MUCH improved email client, sleeker form factor, and fresher icons. Not needed, but since I write about Nokia and wanted to write more about it I thought readers would appreciate it if I picked one up.

Leigh,

Maybe try another store. All of the stores around me here in the Seattle area have been great about offering deals and making things happen for customers to purchase new phones. Tell them you are thinking about buying one, but the full price is a bit much and is there anything they can throw in to help convince you. Your mileage may vary, but the guy at this store in Federal Way offered me all of this without me saying or asking for anything and he had no idea that I wrote for a Nokia site or ZDNet so it was how he would treat any customer.

OK, thank you very much for the quick and comprehensive answer. I will take a run at it again. I have a Nokia Nuron now (on an extra line – my daily phone is a MyTouch 4G), and I would really like to upgrade to the Astound as the specs are really interesting.

The Astound is a HUGE upgrade over the Nuron! The Nuron is probably a year old, they should upgrade it for you with at least some kind of discount. Good luck.

My local T-mobile store rep is researching. I hope she finds out how to get that kind of deal! Yes, I realize it is a huge upgrade, and I wasn’t unhappy with the Nuron… Especially the tethering, and the maps are excellent too. It always appeared to me to be an under-appreciated phone, but technology has evolved…. I wonder if I could call your local store up there and see if they could ship me the phone and accesories with that kind of deal or something close to it?

That’s a sweet deal. I dind’t get the accessories, but managed to walk out paying about $290 after tax, which is still less than the $325 i should have paid. Sadly though, the one i god had some definate software issues regarding and so I ended up returning it. I also had an N8 sent to me by WomWOrld at that time which performed much better for me, so I’m thinkning one of those plus Anna which is coming soon will still be pretty sweet. I just need to see if i can bring the price down a bit or wait until some unexpected expenses have cleared through (a reason for the return rather than exchange it).

James I wouldn’t say the Astound is a step down from the N8 though, as long as it works well. WiFi calling is now free (won’t use your minutes on t-mobile) and supported by the astound but not the N8, the stereo speakers on the back are not muffled as soon as you put the phone down, the call quality was better and i managed to put people on hold with my cheek on the n8 but not the astound so maybe the proximity sensor is better. I also felt the screen was more responsive – I had more issues with using swype on the N8 than on the astound. Oh, and the dual led flash makes a great flashlight. The camera is not as good on the astound though it’s still good and not as bad as people make it out to be, it has less memory and has more plastic in the design, though it still looks great and the N8 obviously has HDMI and comes with a better sales pack. Maybe these are the bigger issues but it depends what you need in a phone.

Matthew, i hope your Astound is more reliable than mine was.

One last thing – I find it amazing how many reps are saying to not get nokia right now as they are switching to windows phone. I’d say i’d heard it from about 50% of reps I spoke to when considering about buying the astound (though not the guy i bought it from), and one of the two reps there when i returned it.

Hi Matthew,

I’m excited about the Symbian Anna update. The Astound is great but I already have an N8. Do you mind posting an article/feature on the Anna’s latest features? Thanks!

Is the OS more responsive now? (less waiting time when opening SMS, for example). Thanks!

Walked into 2 t-mobile stores yesterday in upstate south carolina to try out the astound. In the first store I was greeted by a very friendly salesman. I told him I was interested in the astound. He told me “That is trash.” When I asked why, he said it is slow, the camera sucks, and has no apps. I went to the second store and while they didn’t say it was trash, they told me if I bought it, they would charge me a restocking fee if I returned it, because they warned me how bad it is. No other device in the store would be charged a restocking fee if returned according to the rep.
