All About Symbian Nokia E72 review helps me with purchase choice
As I continue to use the N97 mini and Nokia N900 I keep thinking about the Nokia E72 as I try to figure out which of these three devices I will purchase in early 2010. I was leaning towards the E72 because I really enjoyed using the E71, but the awesome construction, high resolution display, and excellent keyboard of the Nokia N97 mini has me leaning much more heavily that way. I just read Steve’s Part 2 E72 review and conclude that the N97 mini is probably the better choice between these two. Copied below are a few key statements from Steve that concern me, in regards to the E72:
I gave Nokia’s N97, Samsung’s i8910 HD and Sony Ericsson’s Satio a little extra time before delivering a verdict, since each, in its own way, was trying to do something new and different and a little patience from me wasn’t unreasonable. But the E72 should have arrived on the market in ‘finished’ form – the Eseries team have had a good reputation here – and, while hitting 90% of its software targets, doesn’t quite have the full package yet. I’d have accepted the current firmware as a ‘beta release with two months to go before availability’ and it’s frustrating that Nokia’s business customers are being used as guinea pigs here – the very customers who have been swearing on (not at) Nokia Eseries for reliability and dependability.I agree that the E72 software should be as solid and functional as the hardware and I am disappointed to read about the current issues. I also found the hardware of the E72 wasn’t quite as sleek and beautiful as the E71 and with the same lower resolution display there doesn’t seem to be enough for me to upgrade my E71 that my wife now loves and uses daily. So, yet again, we have a modern smartphone arriving on the scene in a flawed state. The E75 team took forever (months) with their first major firmware update – the E72 needs to get one right now – or at least a downloadable patch for Nokia Messaging.
While Steve’s review is a bit disappointing, it does help know one of the three devices off of my list for consideration. I was leaning towards the N97 mini due to the app support and sleek form factor, but the N900 calls me too because of the sheer power and fun interface. If a few key apps could get added then there would be no question for me. One thing I stated on the TiPB Live! #80 was that I haven’t found any hardware limitations on the N900 while the low RAM does affect me from time-to-time on the N97 mini. Software can always be upgradeable so if software issues are the only thing holding me back on the N900 then there is hope for future updates.

E72 Bad Things:- - It does not auto recognise capital alphabet like E71 - When u type fast it skips some alphabet - When u insert a Image in a word sheet it doesnt recognise - Whenever u restart ur phone most of the times u lose your email setting. - Web browsing is slower than E71 - You cannot underline or use bold or italic through shortcuts in word like Ctrl U, B, I like E71 - This phones hangs now and then like a windows based. - Contacts shortkey does allow u to add new contact after long hold. - Basic Barcode reader is missing. - Web Feeds in missing in he bookmark list, u need to go to setting and find it. - Mailbox clock switches the date at 12 noon. So u get the mail dated to next date. - Memory card in setting is missing which was usefull in E71, like format etc. - Nokia has saved it time by not making new O.S. Has used N-Series user interface which does match with the E-Series User Interface. - Optical Key not at all usefull - The System is so slow that even setting come very slow, and if u try to select things fast then it leaves you back to the home screen including surfing mails. -Battery Backup is only about 1 and half days, and more worse is that u cannot trust this phone as day 1 it shows full battery, and second day you wont even come to know when it comes from full to drain. - Even if Wi-Fi server is not found it still says Hidden Wi-Fi found. - In Opera 10 Browser u cannot use ‘U’ it only uses * - Even space bar key hangs now and then and to use it we need to restart the phone.
People please tell Nokia to find a way out of all this..
The E72 is the best Nokia mobile phone I have ever tried, tested and owned.
Its premium materials, along with the beautifully crisp display accompanied by a truly awesome QWERTY keypad make this truly desirable. The S60 Symbian, although somewhat samey, offers fantastic back compatability and is far and away the most versatile OS – popular with developers, I just hope people try this phone out before going Blackberry.
This phone is brilliant, don’t be fooled by touch screen keyboards – if you want a phone which is easy to use, has a 600Hz chipset (very fast for any phone, let alone S60) and an easy to use and intuitive keyboard then you have to have a real buttoned one – for which the E72 is a masterpiece.
Thankyou.

For correct time settings, select the correct timezone, turn the automatic Time update on, again select the correct timezone (as automatic time updates over rides the timezone setting) and restart the phone.
Worked for me on the Nokia 5800

I am currently using a Nokia 5800 and wish to upgrade soon.
Nokia N900 is out of question [ I want a phone, not a mini palmtop computer
After going through check list of things would need the phone for I think the E series fits in perfectly.
Do I go for E71x (haven’t heard negative abt this 1 from folks using it ) or the Nokia e72.( A better form factor and upgraded camera but seems like it was launched as beta I hear bugs with this phone almost everyday.
Your thoughts ?? It is worth waiting for some time for Nokia to fix bugs with e 72, or should i go for the E 71 ???
Josh, the E71x is a very nice device, but AT&T has it locked down WAY too much and I would really recommend the E72. I have an eval unit right now that I am testing out and it is a great device that is better than I thought it would be. The E71 is still a great choice too, but the 5 megapixel camera and standard 3.5mm headset jack are very nice additions.
