Stop complaining, US Nokia N8 price is lowest around

Stop complaining, US Nokia N8 price is lowest aroundWe are now less than a week before Nokia World and pre-orders for the Nokia N8 have now begun in the UK. As you can clearly see in Rafe’s post over on All About Symbian, the $549 pre-order price we see here in the US is the lowest of all of the countries where you can pre-order the N8. Unfortunately for some of us, including me, I am also hit with 10% sales tax on top of the $549 price. This is still less than I have paid before for SIM free phones and after checking out several carrier branded phones it is worth it to get pristine smartphones that are designed to work as the manufacturers originally designed them to work.

As I stated in my previous N8 pre-order post, the Nokia N8 is cheaper than the iPhone 4 that is still locked to AT&T. It will sure be nice when people start looking at the full unsubsidized prices so we can compares apples to apples to see the value of devices.

So to get the new Nokia Messaging client, Social app (facebook & twitter), Angry Birds, etc on my N97 mini I have to pay $549 to Nokia for the N8 and trash my Mini ($550 when bought).

I will tell you the truth, I really like the N8 but at this point is a moral choice not to buy it, at this point I prefer to throw $550 to the toilet to throw it to Nokia, sadly after using Nokia smartphones since the 3650 I will use these $550 and buy an unlocked android, I prefer to be fooled by Samsung, Sony Ericsson or any other before being fooled again by Nokia.

May be $550 is a good price, but will be trashed money in a couple of months when S^4 appears and you cannot upgrade (let alone Meego). In any other OS/Manufacter your money will be better spent.

i had really hoped one of the US carriers would pick up the N8.

Kevin, what for? They will load it of ****, will cripple it, updates will never come, the price tag will put it between android smartphones and dumbphones and the only selling point will be the 12mpx camera. This will be good for Nokia?

Anyway, rumours are that AT&T will pick it up.

Matthew, the prices in Europe are always quoted WITH tax so for the UK, the price of £399 (That’s what MobileFun are selling it at) is £339 before tax (17.5% currently).

£339 is $520 so it’s actually cheaper than the USA at today’s exchange rate.

The N8 might be great hardware, but it makes you wonder if it is worth picking up when Meego is right around the corner. Maybe it’s cheaper in the U.S. We don’t have a VAT tax like most countries. Is it still worth buying knowing it might be obsolete in just several months? I know I will not be picking this up. The fact that it is a pentaband phone is amazing though. I can only hope AT&T doesn’t pick up this phone. They’ll destroy it like they do with all their Android and feature phones. We’ll see the weight Microsoft can put behind Windows Phone 7 to stop AT&T from destroying another handset. I wish Nokia the best of luck, but I think they still have a lot of work ahead of them in order to stay on top.

If you’re going to keep waiting for the latest and greatest, you’ll never buy anything.

Best to wait for Meego with the rumoured N9.

If you do wish to buy, best to wait a bit and see if it is not another N97. Wait a couple of weeks first. Is $550 and tax a good price? Well, the Nexus One was $530 and tax … it seems like this is the price range. Maybe Nokia should discount its phones a bit seeing that its bleeding market share.

Who cares about the price when it’s released! How about the $200 discount we’ll all probably get for buying it 6 months later? I just want a good camera on my phone, and this will probably be one of the best for the next year or so. It’ll run all the software that S^4 devices will, more or less (just like S^1 isn’t going to be left in the dust, not with its huge install base). Heck, I feel like my FP1-endowed E71 isn’t really missing any critical apps, and that truly is an ancient OS!
