Skype for Symbian updated, you can get around Verizon too
I was sent a link to the Skype blog announcing a brand new version of Skype for the latest Symbian phones, including the N8, C7, and E5. I fired up my web browser and went to the skype.com/m website and discovered that the Skype Verizon deal here in the US blocks ANYONE outside of specific Verizon handsets from getting Skype. However, I was not going to stop there and figured out all you need to do is switch your device to offline mode and then use a WiFi connection to go to the Skype site and get the .sisx file to install on your device.
This new version includes Skype’s high quality audio codec, SILK, so calls should be even better than they were before. Here is what is listed on the Skype blog for the updated application:
- make free Skype-to-Skype calls and IM on 3G or WiFi
- save money on calls and texts to phones abroad
- share pictures, videos and other files from your phone
- easier to add contacts, navigate, add a photo to your profile and set your mood message
- updated the interface to better fit larger screens

sigh. It’s amazing how companies try to operate with geographical limitations on the Internet. Don’t they know they’ll be circumvented?
I didn’t have that issue from my N97; might be an issue with any devices that are on-deck vs off-deck.
But yes, regional issues for mobile software like this do suck; unfortunately, as things move more and more online, this will be more common than not for certain types of software.

Great application, very very nice!!!

Dumb question perhaps, but how do you get to offline mode. I went to connection manager and disconnected the t-mobile connection, but when I go to skype site, it connects through t-mobile automatically again.
Thanks!

Hi guys, of course it’s a great application, I’m using Skype in my phone “but the older version” and in my computer 6 years or so, I like the sound quality, the features, and the UI as well. However, there is no upgrade for my phone S60 version but It’s OK. To Jennifer it’s not really a dumb question, but may be you are not very familiar with Nokia options and features. Anyways here is how. You should just press the button to switch to the off line mode. Or go through Settings > personal >profiles > then off line. Remember that you can NOT receive or transmit any call, SMS, or Data from your carrier provider while using the off line mode. Thanks Matt for the news Matt. Have a nice week end guys

I am surprised. Since on my unlocked 5800XM US model on AT&T, I have not had any problem in downloading skype from skype.com/m.

I tried to post this link through your tip section. But seems your website is broken, hitting submit button doesn’t seem to do anything on Firefox and safari.
Neways, here it is: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/kindleappfornokiaphones/
I just came across this at some other Nokia blog. This is a good attempt to persuade Amazon to make Kindle app. I hope you can post it on your website, so that readers here also become aware of it and start signing the petition. Please spread the word around.

Just tried that technique in the article, but it no longer works. Would appreciate it if somebody had the .sisx file and would post it somewhere.
