Recommended accessories for your new AT&T Nokia E71x
OK, time for a plug for our fairly new Nokia Accessory store now that people are starting to pick up the Nokia E71x at their local AT&T stores. I have had an unlocked E71 since last Fall and am very familiar with the device and what accessories are good to have on hand so I wanted to pass along some of my recommendations to you.
Nokia Car Charger DC-4: With AT&T Navigator running in your car on your Nokia E71x, you are going to want to have a charger for your car. The DC-4 plugs into your cigarette lighter/power adapter and charges up your E71x on the go.
Nokia 3.5mm headset adapter: One thing I don’t like about the E71x is the usage of a 2.5mm headset jack that doesn’t let me use my high end earphones with the device. You will need to pick up a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter to be able to use your standard earphones and I really wish Nokia or AT&T would include one of these in every retail package. You will need to find one with three bands on it to get stereo playback in your headset and a reader (thanks Bruce) pointed me to this one at Radio Shack that looks like a good solution.
Nokia 1500 mAh BP-4L battery: You will find that the Nokia E71x gets excellent battery life and even power users should be able to get by on a full day with a single charge. However, if you are traveling or do not have access to a charger you can pick up a spare BP-4L 1500 mAh battery for your E71x and pop it in whenever you get low.
Dane-Elec 16GB microSDHC card: I am a big fan of removable storage media and am still amazed how far down in price and size these cards have gone over the last few years. You can use a microSD card to store photos, movies, music, and even applications with the E71x. Check out the 16GB card we have in our store to fill your storage needs.
Case-Mate Clear Armor film: The Nokia E71x does not have a touchscreen, but it is so small and compact you will find yourself throwing it in your shirt and pants pockets. You may also have keys in your pocket so consider the Case-Mate Clear Armor film to protect the display and the back of your E71x from scratches. You get 2 full sets in the package and this is a product I will be getting soon for my own new E71x.
There are several more good accessories in our store too so check them out if you are looking to optimize your E71x experience. Are there other accessories you recommend for Nokia Experts readers?

A Nokia 3.5mm headset adapter was included here in europe. At least in my package.
Cheers, Mike
The E71 maxes out at 8gb for the microSD card.
Really? I will have to put my 16GB card in there and try it on the E71 and E71x. I didn’t think there were any limits once SDHC support was added.
Brad and others,
I just tried my 16GB card in both the E71 and E71x and it worked like a champ. I believe you can actually go up to 32GB with these SDHC compatible devices, but that card is just now starting to come out.
That’s great news! If you do a Google search, you’ll see a ton of references about the E71 supporting SDHC ‘up to’ 8gb. I would have picked up a larger card had I known.
I’m guessing that when the E71 was announced 16gb cards were not available yet? That’s one downside to the internet, things can get repeated even after they’ve been debunked or are out of date.
Yeah, when hardware is released the companies only state it is compatible up to whatever size cards are available at the time because they cannot test larger capacity cards that are not yet available. I think the upper limit on most SDHC-compatible smartphones is 32GB, but it may be even higher than that. I have not yet heard of any cards larger than 32GB coming out, but as always this capacity will increase in the future.

Just Got my e71x great phone however this lacking. For a PDA. this is lacking: 1. Home page cannot be customized. 2. New mail – no new mail count – I have to search thru all my accounts to see the new mail ..wasting time just shows @ icon or new email message at bottem of screen.. very lame!!! (I have 4 email accounts).. we need to know how many new emails we have.. 3. Mail tabs with show @ — should show mail account name 4. Calendar is weak.. cannot interface with Google calendar or outlook or outlook. 5. most of the apps supplied need a pay subscription, 6. Creating new email account is not intuitive.. you get t stuck on trying to reinstall xpressMail ..Finally used XM settings .. prompts you for new email account…

Dear M. Miller, Ive been really looking at purchasing the nokia e71x for about a week now. I was wondering if i understood your post correctly concerning the memory card capacity for the phone. Since the phone supports sdhc it will hold higher than the reported 8GB by the manufacture?
Rian, I use a 16GB microSD with my E71x and it works with no problems. The 32GB card should also work when it is released.

I just got the E71x a couple days ago, and so far I’m loving it. I was able to get it through Best Buy with an upgrade and only paid $75 for it! (AT&T store was wanting $199) I was kind of leary of trying the E71x because I’ve never really been a huge Nokia fan. But it seems like Nokia has come a long way from what I remember. I’ve gone through a lot of smartphones and PDA’s .. HTC 8525, Tilt, Motorola Q9h, Palm Treo 650, and of course a couple of BlackBerry’s … BlackBerry had always been my favorite PDA, and I was pretty excited to try out the Bold or the new 8900 Curve .. but when I saw this Nokia and felt how solid it was with a stainless steel casing, I was impressed. There are a few minor things I’m not impressed with; like what was mentioned before without having a message count, I also think the ringer and/or message tones could be a little louder – I’ve missed a few because I can’t hear it and that’s because it’s turned on the loudest. Also, it would have been nice if there were more symbols on other keys instead of having to go to the “chr” menu for so many of them. WiFi works amazing and internet is incredibly fast (almost at comparison speeds to my laptop). It’s taken a little while to get used to the keyboard style, as the keys are so cramped and small, but little by little I’m adjusting and actually starting to like the compact layout more and more.
I’m pretty happy with this phone, I’m still undecided if it outdoes BlackBerry, but I’m sticking with it for a while and giving it it’s fair chance. Cons are minor, and pros are very impressive.

I have had my E71x for just weeks. Still learning how to use it. I just took a vacation about 5.5 hours from the house and decided to use the GPS. AT&T has a 30 free trial offer. The battery was fully charged. About 4.5 hours in I got a message the battery was low. Shortly after that the GPS stopped working. It froze. I am thinking maybe when the low battery indicator came on it might have frozen my GPS. I closed then reopened the GPS and it took me the rest of the way home. I have used the GPS since then without any problems but not for the amount of time I used it to get back from vacation. I think the phone is great. The condo we stayed at had wi fi and my phone picked it right up and it was fast. I also dropped my new phone (man that hurt me when I did that) but not a scratch any where on it. I dropped it on a ceramic tile floor. Just using the phone for calls and a little texting and using no other features I have gone 3 days before it needed charging.
I’ve had the nokia e71x and have tried multiple wired headsets (stereo) and have an annoying echo effect when I talk. It seems that the mic is picking up my voice and replaying through the speakers. Anyone else have this problem?

Am I the only person using this phone that is having connectivity problems? I frequently have calls dropped which is very frustrating as I chose this phone due to high marks for reception. I am wondering if I just happened to get a lemon in an otherwise good bunch. I also noticed that there were some messages in my texting inbox that came with the phone – most were symbols and did not make sense. It was supposedly new, but it makes me wonder if it was a refurb. I appreciate any thoughts. Thanks.

I bought a E71x because I got it for $0 and a another $50 cash back. I gave it to my wife and got myself an iPhone 3G S. This thing is no contest for the iPhone. While E71x has promise it fails miserably in the UI. It frustrated me to no end!
My wife uses it to make basic phone calls.

Has anyone tried using a 32gb card on it yet? I was thinking about getting one, but don’t want to waste money. Currently only have a 2gb on mine and would love to dl my music onto it and get rid of my maxed out 8gb mp3 player
I can’t decide if I really like it or not, it’s ok i guess but this is my first smart phone and I need to play with it a little more before I decide

I have had this phone for 6 months and I love it for texting, but it has good and bad qualities….. The internet is fast but the mail was questionable so I downloaded the free gmail app and the free gmaps app and those are amazing, but I agree that their apps are not that great and it sucks you have to pay extra for everything else…… If you are all about apps get an iphone or BBerry

I’ve had my Nokia e71x since August, and I love it! I previously owned a razor and it was fine. But I’m in school and working full time, so I needed internet and a screen big enough to read emails. I have always loved Nokia phones for their reliability. They are like the Energizer bunny and last forever. I didn’t really catch onto the Blackberry bandwagon, but wanted something comparable. I did plenty of research, and the Nokia e71x does everything the Blackberry does. My only compliant is that it sometimes hangs up, but other than that, I’m am totally hooked on this phone. If I changed, it might be to an iphone, only because you can enlarge the screen to gigantic sizes.

Has anyone else had problems with the charger?? I am thinking of getting a USB charger? any suggestions?
Does any one have a good solution to carry this phone. It is too thin for most of the cases at the at&t store and I have gone multiple places to find after market but to no avail.
Got my E71x a few weeks back and I have to say I am getting used to it and it has features I like, but a lot of work is needed that I do not see every getting changed. There are pay for apps that allow you to crack the unit and customize it but I would be careful with them.
If I had not been with Blackberry for so long I think I would love this phone, but there are to many things that are not intuitive and make you repeat over and over. Non-customizable UI makes for frustrating use. Web, GPS and e-mail work great minus the new email count or account reference(my iPod Touch does the same thing though.) Would love a true copy paste like the rev3 iPhone (limited text can be copied)I lost my capability of speed-dials on every button on the qwerty keypad.(Blackberry has this)

Steve: I got a horizontal leather case for my E71x that fits on my belt. It’s perfectly sized and protects the phone. I got from the AT&T authorized reseller where I bought my phone. The case is a Mybat brand.

Is there anyway to customize text alerts for different contacts instead of only one? and if… how can i do that?

when I tried using the xm radio app trial included with the e71x I couldn’t hear anything. I could see what song was supposedly playing and it was not on mute. Do I actually need headphones to hear the radio? Ridiculous. Also, please forgive my ignorance, but is there any way to get Pandora or anything like it for free or low cost on my locked phone? Thanks!!!
