Quick tip: removing on-screen virtual pad from a Nokia 5800 application
I posted my thoughts on the Nokia 5800 and after a couple of more days of usage I just ordered my own blue model that will be here next week. If you get the 5800, then you may load up Java applications such as Gmail. After I loaded up Gmail I saw a display similar to the one shown here (thanks to All About Symbian for the screenshot while I figure out how to take them off that device) with a virtual keypad on the display. It bugged me for a while until I found the solution so I wanted to share that with you on a quick tip of the day.
If you see this virtual pad appear, then take the following steps to remove it:
- Go to Settings
- Find the Application mgr.
- Select Installed apps.
- Select the application with the virtual pad
- Select Options>Suite settings
- The option below Access point is On-screen keyboard, so select that and then select Off
- Tap OK

Developers can switch this on or off using the manifest .jad file.
For users the connection settings are handy (stop you getting asked more than once if the app can use the network, particularly useful in the case of GMail).
BTW the problem with using full screen in Gmail is you can’t scroll as easily. However it is possible. To scroll hold down and drag the canvas up or down (as you would in Maps). Not as easy as the dpad, so I tend to use gmail with the extra controls.
Thanks Rafe, I never thought about leaving the keypad on there for scrolling. I was just looking to optimize my screen real estate.
BTW, what are you using for screenshots on the 5800? Without buttons I can’t seem to turn on the screenshot application I am using on other devices.
I’m using BestScreenSnap – http://www.smartphoneware.com/screen_snap-for-s60-5th-edition-product.php and Remote S60 Professional – http://www.mobileways.de

Hi, i wanted to ask something – from the user perspective – rather than the developer’s one.
Since the application I’m using does not support touch api, but on the other hand – it is able to dynamically adjust to new screen size – as much as available, I’d like to have a smaller version of the virtual pad – so that BIGGER area of the screen will be left for the application itself.
I’ve seen for example on the Nokia 5800, that a flash media file – downloaded and launched from the file system – has a similar virtual pad, but in this case – it is as compact as I would have liked to have for the java application.
and idea will be appreciated. thanks.
