UPDATE: Pre-ordered Nokia N8 arrived in dark gray!

As I posted on Friday, late at night I received a note that my pre-ordered N8 had shipped yet the stupid Nokia USA store doesn’t seem to provide tracking info on the site. I called them on the phone three times today to both get tracking info and cancel my orange pre-order after deciding it wasn’t worth the return pain to get a different color. Each time I called I was told the system was down and call back in 2-3 hours, but that happened all day long so I gave up. I just arrived home and lo and behold there was a large box on my chair with my own dark gray Nokia N8-00 inside.

I took a few photos with the evaluation blue one as you can see below. My dark gray one is charging up now and I will see if there are any differences between it and the European blue one I have to send back later this week. For now, I am quite happy with the dark gray color and plan to load it up and get it customized real soon. I still have several posts under development too so stay tuned.

One thing I noticed is that this dark gray one was made in China while the eval unit was made in Finland. I really wanted one made in Finland since it seems more “Nokia” if it is built in the home country. Oh well, I can’t swap the blue one for the gray one.

UPDATE: As you can read below, there are several people who received theirs who are apparently having issues of locking up, reboots, and inability to play videos. I have my own dark gray N8 and it has been as stable and solid as the evaluation blue N8. I haven’t had a single lock up or reboot and the preinstalled videos play perfectly. I really like the cool Dolby surround test video that plays audio out in different channels. I am not sure how widespread these issues are and hoping it was just a bad batch that was sent out. I do feel for people though since the Nokia USA store is not the easiest to work with and it may take some efforts to get a return or exchange.

My N8 arrived today too, right when i was on the phone with a Nokia rep trying to get my tracking info.I love how the phone looks and feels.I have to say though I will definately change it for a different color later on.Dark grey looks fantastic too but like somebody else said “this phone screams for colors”.I will get either an orange or a blue one.Silver and green are not my thing. Now i’m setting it up and trying to get familiar again to the Symbian interface.Luckily after the N95 I’ve skipped the N96 and N97.Been using Maemo 5 for a while and my last Symbian device was N82.Mine is made in China too.Like you I was hoping to get a made in Finland one.Guess those go to Europe.Even so it has an awesome build so it doesn’t matter really. It’s a good day for US Nokia fans.Everyone ENJOY your new toy.

Got mine today too! Currently personalizing it and transferring a lot of media from my N97. I have to re-arrange a lot because the N97 had 32gb while the N8 has 16GB. I do have a 16GB microSD, but I will be looking for a 32GB as soon as possible =)

I have a question:do any of you guys feel like the “slide to unlock” button is a tiny bit loose? Because I think it’s a little loose and if I shake the phone i can hear it making a sound.I appreciate any response.

“One thing I noticed is that this dark gray one was made in China while the eval unit was made in Finland. I really wanted one made in Finland since it seems more “Nokia” if it is built in the home country.”

Only the european versions are made in Salo, Finland. Versions for rest of the world are made in Beijing, China. Of course, both use same parts and same manufacturing process, so there shouldn’t be any difference.

VV, I don’t have such issue with my N8; at least I don’t hear a rattle of sorts. Is it really noticable? If you feel uncomfortable about it; you should get an exchange. Of course, that would mean being without a phone again…

Rafael thanks for your reply.Like I said when I shake the phone i hear that unlock button rattling.I compared it with the unlock button on my N900 and the one on the N8 is definately wobbly.(“lucky” me). It’s a shame really as the phone is generally well built but this issue i’m having is disapointing for me.Nokia made so much fuss about how great the build quality is but unfortunately I will have to return mine.I took some pics and videos though with the N8 and wow…just wow! That Xenon flash rules.Amazing quality. This is the reason why I still want a new N8.I will return mine and make a preorder for an orange one and pray that one won’t have any defects.

I have two N8 devices here, the eval blue one and my own gray one, and neither have a wobbly lock button. Actually, the lock button on the gray one seems a bit tighter even than the blue one and has no movement at ALL. You actually have to make a bit of an effort to slide it, which is what I want in such a button. It sounds like you ended up with a defective one, that does happen from time to time.

Well I ordered mine yesterday and I’m getting it today.I cant wait to get my new toy…..

October 12, 2010

Mine also arrived yesterday . . . and I’m already seriously considering returning it. The hardware, camera, screen, connectivity, speaker, and call quality are all EXCELLENT.

That being said, my device has rebooted itself FOUR times already (the only 3rd party app I’ve installed is Gravity). This is a huge concern.

My biggest gripe, however, is the complete inability to accept or reject meeting requests that arrive via Mail4Exchange. I spend no less than 90% of my life traveling for work, and this phone’s inability to handle meeting requests renders it almost useless to me. How on earth did Nokia “forget” to port this functionality over from Mail4Exchange version for S60v3 and S60v5?

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Matthew Miller
October 12, 2010

Jeff, WOW!, sorry to here about the rebooting. I have yet to see that happen with the eval or my own yet.

I only receive a meeting request about once a week or so, but also noticed this and want to conduct further testing to see if this is handled in the calendar or what. Based on what you say, it may not even work at all. I will contact the Nokia Messaging team and try to find out what is going on here.

Jeff
October 12, 2010

Matt . . . poking around Nokia’s support forums, it seems they already are aware of the issue, though it’s “under investigation.” I receive no less than 20-40 meeting requests every week, many of which are same-day so I must be able to accept to reflect changes in my calendar (or risk missing these meetings).

Something tells me I won’t see an update / fix to this issue within my 14-day return window. It saddens me as I am currently packing for my next 1.5 week business trip, that I won’t be bringing the N8 with me.

Nokia had better get this issue ironed out before they release the E7. Hard to pitch a business-focused phone missing such a critical M4E feature.

Matthew Miller
October 12, 2010

I wonder if the DataViz Roadsync client works on the N8? This was what I used to use when MFE was weak and it worked quite well.

I wonder if we will see differences in the E7 since it is an Eseries device? The E71/E73 has a MUCH better calendar than the lame Symbian^3 one on the N8 and it will be interesting to see if there are differences here too.

I got mine yesterday too. I think i plan to return it. The camera is just fantastic. Nothing else can beat it on the market. However, symbian isn’t how I remember it. I’ll be honest, I was a huge fan of the N97. I would have kept the N97 if it wasn’t for the limited internal memory for programs. I currently have nexus one and I truely thought the N8 was going to bring me back to nokia. I just love nokia’s hardware. I may have to skip another generation… perhaps wait for symbian^4 or meego.

My main complaints are the web broswer and the horrible virtual keyboard. If nokia can fix those, perhaps i may reorder the N8 through Amazon. But as for now… i think i will need to pass. but dang… the camera is too good and I will definitively miss it. Its a great second phone for trip (basically for the camera and video capture), but its not for me as an everyday device.

@ jeff I had a couple of restarts as well. I think its from some of the symbian^1 programs i installed…. and sometimes I got some hangups with the touch screen not recognizing my finger.

October 12, 2010

Thank you for replying Matt.I will now surely return mine and preorder an orange one.(But it’s only thanks to its camera)I would just like to say that if that one proves to have the same issue with the unlock thing I will return it too and I will be DONE with the N8.Getting to the software side of things had some unpleasant moments as well.Had 2 General System Errors so far, scrolling through the N8′s PRELOADED gallery is certainly not smooth.About one third of the way it just stops for a second and then it resumes scrolling.I had to restart the phone 2 times because it would not play it’s own preloaded videos.(would only play sound not video and display an icon with a broken file).Same thing with videos recorded with its camera. After restart it would play them nicely. This is with no third party programs installed.Personally I like Symbian 3′s interface look but it behaves poorly in my case at least.I know it’s a “new” operating system and things will be ironed out with future firmwares but even so…it is disapointing. These are some of the negatives I’ve noticed so far.Early adopters have to put up with these things I guess ha?

Hey guys! Got my N8 Monday, and YES! Having the same problems.. I had to restart the phone 5 times by now.. Had a message stuck in outbox for 5 hours (Deffered multimedia message). Had to delete the whole conversation to get rid of it.. The whole phone did freeze on me couple times and I somehow lost full charge overnight. Now my conversation outline stopped working, so the only way how to read my message is to go into inbox.. (no new message notification either).. I just turned the phone off (again). Haven’t plugged the phone to the PC yet. Love the phone, but the software is ONE BIG DISASTER!

I just updated my post after playing several of the included music videos and have yet to have any problems with my dark gray N8 at all. I usually am pretty lucky about getting devices free of defects and it looks like this applies in this case too.

VV
October 12, 2010

I would like to say that the problem with playing the videos happened only yesterday.I had to restart it 2 times yesterday because only after that the videos would play.Today i did not experience any problems regarding playback.Which is really odd because yesterday I was not multitasking or using the device in a weird way. Also the General System Errors appeared but the phone did not freeze or crash. They just popped up on the display.Like I said I like the phone and don’t want to scare anybody off buying it.But there were software problems.Today the only problem that is still there is that scrolling through photos is not smooth. It stops for a second or half a second and then it resumes. And that’s annoying.A bit of The Twilight Zone for me using Symbian 3.

On the fence with the phone now. I got use to the keyboard. I tested the internal videos via HDMI… worked flawlessly I attached a usb flash drive and attempted to backup my data onto it, but that froze the N8 (or at least made it very slow). Other than that… everything else works great.

I tested the xenon flash in the dark, outside. I am very impressed with the photo.

I hope Beta Labs can release a new browser before my 14 day period. The more I use the phone, the more I like it.

So far my Dark Grey unit has behaved great; no freezes or crashes/restarts. Hope that what others are experiencing are limited and not widespread; that would be real bad publicity for Symbian right now. Best of luck to everyone.

Very Happy N8 User, Rafael

I received my dark gray N8 a couple of days ago. Nothing but problems. I spent a half day trying to sync it with my Outlook Contacts and Calendar. I was finally successful, but not until I had two system crashes, two Nokia error messages and lots of frozen screens. I finally tried uninstalling the Ovi software and on the second attempt, it worked, but took about an hour to complete. Granted, I have about 2000 contacts but my old N97 8GB worked like a charm loaded up with this data.

My N8 phone is sluggish and freezing constantly. I actually had an incoming call and the phone was so slow to respond to my tapping the answer key over and over that the call was missed. Rebooting does no good and no matter what I’m doing (maps, phone calls, closing apps, etc) it freezes or goes to a blank screen or takes at least 30 seconds to respond. I haven’t called Nokia yet, but at this point my excitement at finally getting my N8 has turned into nothing but disappointment.

Off off…må si at jeg er skuffa over n8-00 mobilen min.

October 15, 2010

@honza i’ve got the same problem with the multimedia message that won’t delete, can you give me advice of how to get rid of it? I’ve even gone as far as doing the ’3 finger salute’ reset and it’s still there, although ovi maps have deleted! I agree this is a fantastic phone but i think there are some bugs that need to be ironed out. I would wait a few months for the problems to be ironed out before buying one..

October 15, 2010

@Mark

All you need to do is delete the whole conversation your message was sent in. This happened to me 3x already.

Haven’t call Nokia yet, waiting for the first update or I might try to reinstall the software. :/

October 16, 2010

Mine arrived 3 days ago. I immediately loaded up as much of my N97′s old pics and videos via usb otg as I wanted to, transferred contacts etc via bluetooth.

So far NO PROBLEMS with the built in software or hardware!

It feels like a solid, super high end luxury item in your hands. Really much thinner and lighter than I expected. Very unlike most plastic Android phones and the dead boring iPhone. I’ve also dropped it a few times and still don’t even have a scratch!

I’ve done everything you can imagine with the device. I’ve downloaded a ton of themes and my N97 wallpaper collection still works on it.

I got my new Nokia N8 5 days back and I am so not happy with it. The phone is so fabulous, has all you need n etc on the first site but after Day 1 , till date I have had more than 7 resets after the message “Phone Will Restart” and has an option for “ok”. My phone also goes into a freeze mode once-to-twice in a day.

P.S:- I dont even have much of data in the phone right now , 500 contacts , 30 images , and 76 songs thats it , and still it goes into freeze and reset.

I am so unhappy .. Is thr any solution to the problem??? .. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

October 20, 2010

To delete a message in the outbox, you have to move it into the drafts folder first. (At least on s60v5). Sad to see so many software faults on the ‘spearhead’ of the Nokia fightback. I see so many things they could have done better, but they let it ‘just do’. That just WON’T DO.

I share the same problem with Kumar, was retrieving my email over WLAN then black out. Try the 8-20 seconds reset but totally no response at all. The phone is completely dead! I have been using it for only 2 weeks with very little data. Very very dissapointed with the N8.

I had the N95 that was resetting itself so often that it became extremely annoying. I chalked that up to having owned the phone for over 2 years and the software was having issues. So I got in line for the N8 and now have just gotten my hands on it for less than 2 weeks. Yesterday afternoon I was starting a call when it went dead. Initially I thought maybe I ran out of battery, took it home to charge it and did not get the usualy charge signal. Then tried to turn it on, nothing happened. Tried holding down the power button for what feels like forever, nothing happened. Thought maybe I need a new SIM card, went out and got it this morning, still could not get it to turn on. This afternoon, tried again and it came on but I am suspicious.

Don’t like that it’s made in China, I’ve not had good experience with product quality of Chinese or Malaysian made products. My made in Japan Sony still work after more than 10 years, but my made in Malaysia Sony have died after 2 years. Now I fear the worst for my made in China Nokia N8. I’d been happy to pay a higher price to get a made in Finland one.

I will need to wait till Monday to call in to their tech support but am not expecting much help from them. Mostly want to lodge the subject in their log in case they do care about their product quality.

Have been a die hard Nokia fan, but may change my mind if my N8 continues to be unreliable.

Hi I got my n8 in the beginning in november. I loved it, it worked very good except things like cnn and national geographic e! etc. But i was very happy with it. But… in Februari it started to shut down just like mentioned all over the internet… Now 3 week furter nothing has changed. I brought it to a service point. The said the had updated the software. I already did that so it was no use. Then they send it to Nokia. It came back, seemed to work fine again… but in the evening the same.. I went back to the servicepoint they advised me to call Nokia. So I did. I got a boy on the phone who was not in a vary good mood. He promised me that when I send it again they would send me a new one. I asked for his name. I went back to the servicepoint and brought my phone there. They were like me doubful it would work… I decided to call again and got someone else on the phone who was in a much better mood. Turns out the name the first person gave me was from a man that didn’t work there anymore for 2 weeks. He again promised me that the phone will be replaced. Well now we wait and see… This was in Holland by the way…

I’m having problems getting my Micro SD Card to be seen by the phone. (32gb from Amazon so shouldn’t be one of those knock off ones that I have heard are going around). If the phone gets a slight knock or I put it down a bit heavily then the next time I pick it up I have to turn the phone off and take the SD card out, then reinsert it and close the door and restart the phone. Sometimes I have to do this several times before the retched phone sees it too! It’s the most annoying thing about the phone so far. Also I have had it shut down on me all by itself in the middle of my trying to do something. This might happen about once a week so isn’t too bad considering it’s such a small piece of tech to be doing so many things. It’s not always the same thing either which makes it hard to fathom out why it is happening, perhaps the system that controls it is busy doing something else in the background and then can’t take the load of the new thing but that just shouldn’t happen! Even a slow format has not made it visible to the phone.

I purchased my orange N8 in early February, 2011. As of June 13, 2011, my phone mysteriously powered off, won’t power on, won’t charge, won’t reboot, etc. As I start looking around, I’m finding that my experience is far from unusual. While I could presumably ship it off to be repaired in a week or so, I think I’m just going to stop in at AT&T over lunch and get an iPhone. The Nokia N8 was an experiment of sorts for me, and one that I now consider a failure. Moving on.
