Pick up a red or blue Nokia E63 for only $279

The Nokia E71 is one of my favorite all-time mobile phones and is where my AT&T SIM has been living for the majority of the time. Nokia just posted the announcement on the availability of the US version of the Nokia E63 in red and blue. You can currently only pick one up at the New York or Chicago Flagship stores. It is a good thing there is no Seattle store or I would really be in trouble ;) The E63 offers most of what the E71 has with a slightly updated keyboard, no GPS receiver, 3.5mm headset jack (vs 2.5mm on the E71) and a 2 megapixel camera instead of the lame 3.2 megapixel one on the E71. The E63 is also plastic as compared to the stainless steel body of the E71.

I look forward to reading people’s thoughts on the device, especially in regards to the camera quality. I really wish Nokia could issue an update that fixed my purple tinted camera because it would make the device so much more useful to me.

Any readers looking to pick up a new Nokia E63? Do you prefer red or blue?

I am becoming torn, the E63 looks really nice, but the 5800 seems to have a some nice potential as well. I am really not sure which I will go for. I know you all have reviewed both, trying to think which one is more durable and likely to last longer.

I really like the blue E63. I wish I could see one in person, but I don’t live any where near Chicago or New York. :(

…E63 has a 3.5mm headphone socket; the E71 a 2.5mm.

Thanks Max, I didn’t spell that out, but that is a big difference IMHO.

I held the E63 and it feels fantastic in your hand and is a compelling device. If I didn’t have the E71, I would definitely buy the E63. I am a huge QWERTY fan and find I am more productive with them than something like the 5800.

Minus the gps and headphone jack does it have the same software? Wouldyou consider it a downgrade

The E71-2 comes with a full, if slightly old, copy of QuickOffice, zip utility, Adobe pdf and two games. Not sure that the 63 does.

The E71 was 299 on Newegg and 330 on Amazon the last I checked so this isn’t quite the deal for 280.

Regarding the 5800 vs e71 when it comes to durability, that’s part of the reason I purchased the e71. It’s slimmer and made of metal so it should be less prone to crushing. No touch screen means less scratching too. Even of that was a wash, I’d still never go back to a non QWERTY phone. Depends on your usage though. My wifes iPhone is perfect for her. She’d hate my phone.

Do a search on the e71 blogs for an abused e71. I found a post once of an e71 getting thrown around and submerged but it still worked until they finally broke the keys off. I’ve dropped mine in the snow with no issues. Just powered off, removed battery and hit it with compressed air.

I would love to have a US 3G phone, especially that i am an N82 user. The only problem is that I am on T-Mobile and they have no 3G phones I know of other than the G1. I may have to sit this one out. HSDPA would have been sweet, but that would have made it an E71 twin. the 3.5mm jack is cool too some thing the E71 lacks.

Brad, check out Rafe’s experiences with the E71 in the water here, http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/8466WhattodoifyoudropyourE7.php

I agree at this time the E71 is still the better deal, but with the E63 starting out at this price I imagine we will see it drop to around $200 in a few months. I have a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter, but that may be a killer feature for some. I actually find Bluetooth A2DP to work perfectly with my E71 while I am on the elliptical too. I will never give up the E71 (famous last words, huh?) and almost want to go pick up a backup at $300.

I really want to give nokia a try I refuse to go back to blackberry or windows mobile, I want a full keyboard phone to go along with my iphone. I don’t want a phone that has more than one input. I’m having a hard time deciding what nokia to go with I am so uninformed on them, so far i like the e90, e71, and e63. The headphone jack is important to me, don’t really car for camera phones and my iphone and car have gps. Build quality is important to me i hate babying my iphone. Im just confused so many nokias I don’t want to drop 300 plus and hate the phone later

jeff, even people who hate the s60 operating system drool over the build quality of the e71 hardware. Need to know why you dislike Blackberry though. S60 is for people who like to tweek and dig around in menus to adjust preferences. That’s the one thing that drives me crazy on the iPhone; I am always looking for that Advanced Settings tab that isn’t there. But, many people like the hassle free setup of the iPhone. Depends on you.

I agree with Matt on the headphone jack. My $3 eBay adapter just arrived any I love it. Even has a nice 90 degree connector. It’s now a total non-issue.

Matt is also correct in how the price is likely to drop. In fact, chances are that Newegg dropped the price for that reason.

Jeffdc5, the North American version, E71-2, is quad-band GSM and supports 850/1900 HSDPA too for 3G wireless access.

Hey Matt!

I’ve been an E63 owner for 2 months now and I’ve been mightily pleased with it thus far! Sure it drops HSDPA for UMTS and doesn’t ship with a GPS, but considering that it’s cheaper than the E71 by 128 USD here in the Philippines (I bought mine for around 266 USD), the trade-offs seem pretty acceptable. With the difference I’ve been able to buy software and accessories that have made my E63 a more productive handset than a stock E71. Besides, the rubberized QWERTY and its slightly altered key layout are much improved over the E71. (That being said, this is a matter of preference.)

The E71 is a great phone of course, this comment is not making any claims to the contrary, but considering the price differences I think the E63 offers more value-for-money to the average user. I’ve been posting about it in my blog, if anybody’s interested to read. :)

Hey I went out yesterday to manhattan to buy and E71!! I went down to the nokia strore they were asking for 450 i was pissed considering you can get it for 100 dollars less all over the place. I wen down to JR music world they wanted 400 but they matched the newegg online price got my gray e71 went to the at&t store across the street and got a new sim card popped it in. Started working right away and I LOVVVVEEEEE it the call quality is crazy, the speaker is 3x louder than my iphone and web browsing on 3g is insane, anybody that talks bad of At&t’s coverage is using the wrong phone. For now my iphone is only using wifi and the nokia is my workhorse I want both because they both have their strong and weak point. I love s60 so many apps. Im glad i got this phone over another bb i totally kills my old 8820. It’s going to be weird being a two phone guy but i’m loving it so far

As much as the E63 offers a decent price and most of what the E71, I’d much rather pay more for the E71. I’m just waiting for a great price before plucking down the money. Anyone who bought their E71 from Newegg been able to update their devices?

See guys I too went into a great confusion to have E63 or an E71.anyway i hate 5800.its the most slow handset which i have ever used(comparing phone with keypad).Eseries demands more than express music.I think prize given to have an E71 is decent. The metal body can keep E71 a shining star, metal body is long lasting and will maintain its lusture.so frndz E71 is better than E63.Just use this number 8089192770 to share anything more about E71 by aswin(a QWERTY fhan)
