New Ovi Maps update downloaded every second 24 hours a day It was just 13 days ago when I wrote about the amazing news that Nokia released Ovi Maps premium features for everyone for free for life and now we see an astounding figure reported from Nokia. Just since 21 January, Nokia has seen over 1.4 million downloads of the free Ovi Maps version and this occurred with only 10 selected Nokia devices currently supported. The one million mark was reach after just one week and Nokia reports they are seeing an average of one download per second, 24 hours a day. I know I personally downloaded and installed it on a couple of devices right away and am very pleased with the software and services.

Nokia also mentioned that the top five countries downloading the new version of Ovi Maps were: China, Italy, UK, Germany and Spain. The top five most popular Nokia devices installing the download were: Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia N97 mini, Nokia N97 (this just with the firmware update occurring a few days ago), Nokia 5230 and Nokia E72. From next month, all new Nokia GPS-enabled smartphones will include the new version of Ovi Maps, pre-loaded with local country map data, with high-end walk and drive navigation and access to Lonely Planet and Michelin travel guides at no extra cost.

While many in the US may not understand the impact this Ovi Maps release has on the smartphone market, as we can see it is huge around the world and you can easily justify paying another $100 to $200 for a compatible device to have outstanding GPS navigation and worldwide map support on your device.

Thinking about worldwide map support, is there any other company that can even offer maps for you around so many countries? I do not think this is the case and Nokia clearly leads now in GPS navigation and mapping support for world travelers.

Even though it is free, I am still going to wait till Nokia releases the next version of ovi maps with better mapping algorithms. I have garmin mobile xt and ovi maps on my e71 and I used both to go from Ohio to Michigan recently. The route provided by both garmin and ovi were ridiculously weird, but garmin did a better job overall. Ovi kept telling me to turn off the freeway for some reason even though freeway was the fastest AND shortest route. Garmin’s initial route was 7 hours long instead of the regular 4 hours it should have been but after I disregarded its instructions and got on the freeway, it took me straight to the destination. Maybe you should do an article on comparison of both the mapping services.

The only problem I have had with it is the navigation does tend to be a little off on routes you know where you are going and that would be more optimized or better in a few instances, but not too far off. And the night and day feature is not automatic on the maps. Mine starts up in night mode and I have to manually switch it. Not a big deal when in drive mode, but you can’t access it from the my position options to switch it. But do know I am truely happy with this! I love using it on my 5800XM, and it takes me there! I have yet to try the walk feature.

thats probably because the install process os so buggy… i personally tried installing india maps today… 3-4 times… and gave up… hopefully that doesn’t show as 3-4 downloads!

Hello i have a nokia5233 handset which support’s ovi maps but when i change map mode to satellite it did not show the satellite images and it not show my current location if you know it’s solution please reply me through email.

Nokia 5233 can not support some feature of new ovi map ,when you try to use gps its not connect and my nokia 5233 is a full speed internet its internet speed is 2.4mbps

i m having nokia 5233 which is a month older,my problem is when i press the menu button i cannot find the ovi maps icon and i m sure that i have’nt deleted it,should i download ovi maps or suggest me what should i do????help me.

I got a Nokia 5233 few weeks back by de time ovi map was there i upgrade the mobile os to ver:21.1.004C02.01 so i loose de ovi map s/w,aft that i did’t get back, could any one help me up get de map s/w back ty

Same findings as aamir… ovi map’s routing algorithm is not optimized, regardless of any route-settings chosen. ovi maps: 1. free, up-to-date maps 2. excellent screen layouts, maps rendering in portrait and landscape. (garmin xt landscape mode isn’t as nice) 3. excellent text-to-speech, at least in USA. (garmin xt lacks tts) 4. I use ovi maps for walking mode in metro area (SanFran, NY, etc), also great for browsing maps/areas…

garmin xt: 1. has better POI categories, support custom POI, etc. 2. much better routing algorithm; for actual driving/navigation I use Garmin mobile XT.

Nokia, please fix ovi maps routing algorithm and update/add the POI categories and you will have it made.

Nokia 5233 doesnt support GPS bcoz it doesnt have the built in GPS receiver, so y waste time on it anyways??? Ovi Maps is specially for phones having GPS receivers such as N97, N8, E7, C7, E72 etc…
