Nokia posts master plan for 2010, at least 3 major devices coming

And there we go, just a couple hours after I posted my thoughts on the future of Nokia they issued a press release laying out their key plan for 2010. Rafe and Steve are the most Nokia-knowledgable people I know and offer their insights into this announcement on All About Symbian.

I was pleased to read that we will see a milestone Symbian product before mid-year 2010 and another major product milestone before the end of 2010, along with the first Maemo 6 product before the end of 2010. Nokia seems to realize that the user interface is more important in many cases than the device’s functionality and capabilities (look at the iPhone compared to a high end Nseries device) and stated one of their targets as improving the user experience. IMHO, it really is not that bad at the moment and pressing the menu button takes you to displays that are just like an iPhone or Google Android icon-based launcher.

I hope they won’t close the interface side from 3rd party competition :-)

All of my phones for 9 years from 1998 are Nokia, before I switch to being a fanboy. Will someone tell Nokia to please replace their venerable antiquated typeface that probably have existed since the 5110 single-band phone and still in use in the N97.

Apple does not allow customization with iPhones. While Nokia allows customization, but surprisingly leaves typefaces or fonts behind.

I’m all for this…it’s too late for me as in the next few weeks I’ll be plunging into Android, but my experience with Symbian S60 has been at time great and then at times all too painful.

First, I had iPhone features before it was released. Apart from the touch screen there wasn’t anything that the iPhone could do on release I hadn’t already been doing on my phone and a bunch of things that the iPhone STILL can’t do…yet it was SLOW…it was tedious traversing the menus. Email was/is depressing to use.

It’s all about the UI…the app support is excellent, and although I don’t have the choice of the Apple App store, for apps I actually USE my phone has them, as opposed to my iPod Touch which has just 90% games.

@Jessica Magert

It’s useless to plunge into Android now when you know Goolge’s own gPhone is in the horizon, next year. That would make the Droid and all other android devices second class as Google tries to deliver the real Android experience by making its own phone.

[...] compete with their current strategy. Nokia has enough problems competing with their own products, that’s why they’re cutting their 2010 product line in half, adding Palm to the fold would only compound the inter-company competition. Let’s as General [...]
