Nokia Ovi Store appears in the browser of the E71x
As I posted in my 3rd update on my original Ovi Store post you can get to the Ovi Store on an AT&T Nokia E71x just fine using the web browser pointed to store.ovi.mobi. There is not yet a dedicated utility you can load on your device, but the browser version is optimized for the small screen and quite functional. I’ll post a video walk through and some screenshots for you all later tonight.
I successfully downloaded and installed the following applications/items on my E71x so far:
- Earthcomber (free)
- Hava Player (free)
- Bejeweled ($4.99)
Earthcomber also appears to be a Web Runtime Widget (that is for the Nokia 5800) and does not appear to run on the E71xl. I recieved a certificate error trying to install the Java application.
I have to say the Ovi Store from the E71x seems a bit limited in selection of applications so far, but I imagine as Nokia continues to turn things on we will see more and more applications loaded into the store. It was nice to see some of Astraware’s games on the Ovi Store since they are very high quality and highly recommended. There are quite a few games available, which is good because this is the one thing I don’t have much of loaded on my E71x. You can always load up applications like we have been for years so this just gives you even more flexibility and options.
You can’t tell if an app is Java or native Symbian until you go into your My Stuff folder where this will be clearly indicated.
BTW, I browsed and downloaded everything over the AT&T 3G network.

Awesome Matt, thanks for the update. I’ll give it a shot soon and provide feedback too.

Matt, when I go to store.ovi.mobi using the default browser, I get an Ovi page that says “Device incompatible” in big green letters.
“Sorry, but your device is not compatible with the Ovi store.”
May 26, 2009
Sorry for the triple post, but I wanted to post that I get the same results in skyfire .85 and opera mini too.
I also tried using wifi instead of 3G with all three browsers with the same results. :[
What could possibly explain why it works for your e71x but not mine, Matt?
In the web browser, try switching to Operator for the network connection and see if that works. Mine wasn’t working this morning either, but now works just fine.
May 26, 2009
If you use MediaNet as the network connection, you will see the page saying that “Device incompatible”. I just switch to Operator like Matthew suggested. Now the Ovi Store shows up.

Just changed to “Operator” and it works.. thanks guys!

Successfully installed: SMS Preview – works as advertised
RaceChrono, but it looks for an external BT GPS reciever. I’ll keep playing with it.
NeoReader, works ok…it thought a 12 pack of beer was some mimosa facial soap…other more common stuff was recognized.
Unsuccessful: Buddycloud – d/l’ed fine, but wouldn’t install
Unsure: Earthcomber – Not sure what happened, but like in article, it seemed to install w/o error

Update: DO NOT but the $0.99 Twittix. Luckily, I read the reviews before hand and all you’re buying is a demo…for $0.99…
Adaptxt: Installs fine, we’ll see how it works within the week.
mundu Radio: Small selection of stations, but works fine. You need to register an account via their website 1st.

Matt,
Thank you for keeping all of us updated. Has any of you noticed that the build quality of the E71x is not as solid as the unlocked version. My E71x seems to have a big gap between the screen and buttons. It is so obvious that i can see what i think is the circuitry. I went to the store and replaced with a new one but this one seems to have the same problem. I will take it back tomorrow and hopefully third time will be a charm.
Funny Zia, my unlocked E71 has a large gap between the keyboard and display while the E71x looks great. I also like the feel of the E71x better too.

I hate to be the noob…but how do you change the connection to “operator”?
May 28, 2009
TJV, go to MediaNet/Browser>Options>General>Access point>click>change option.
May 28, 2009
I tried doing what was suggested on the site by Matt to my options but I’m still getting the “device incompatible” message. I don’t know what else to do this is getting frustrating.
May 28, 2009
Never mind. I ate my words. I kept on messing around the connections options and it started to work just fine. Thanks.

Nice! Thanks ScooterG.

Hey, I changed my settings on the browser to “Operator” and I am still getting the “device incompatible” message.
Can you please confirm that it’s still working?
The Ovi Store via the browser still works good for me. Sometimes you have to toggle the connection settings so go back and try Internet, then try the site, then go back to Operator and try if that doesn’t work. I don’t know why, but sometimes this is what you have to do to get things line up.

Noticed its now available on my NAM N85. Installing now.

Where are the connection settings?

I had the same issue with Bejeweled on my new e71x. You would think they would warn you on the Ovi store.

I didn’t see many interesting games or apps. in the store. I downloaded SMS preview and it works perfectly. i used to have SMS bubbles in my BJII, and it’s the same thing with a different name. i also downloaded a game called TIBIA ME. it’s a online role playing game, so if ur into that kind of game i guess u’ll like it. didn’t find anything else i like.

Any luck on getting that video up? I’ve been trying to get to the store and I still get the “device not compatible” message. I’ve tried switching back and forth between “Operator” and “MediaNET” with no luck
.

My E71x logs o to the Ovi-Store just fine, it also let me sign up & register etc, shame that nothing much on there appears to be suitable for the phone yet though, but like Matthew has already said, with time hopefully items will start to appear.

i have the e71x for at&t. I live in florida, and im starting to think that at&t is intentionally blocking the ovi store cause i cant get to it. I have tried editing opera mini settings over and over with no luck. Same for MediaNET and the config settings to operator etc. No luck still. Also having problems with mobbler and photo browser, which i can install but i cant even open. Any help will be greatly appreciated
June 16, 2009
just wondering what those users who got this to work what your encoding settings were for mediaNet just a thought
June 16, 2009
sweet, i got it. dont know how, but i finally did

After changing connection to ‘operator’, I have been able to get to the Ovi site. Problem now it that I can’t seem to install any thing. So far, I keep getting certificate errors. My process is getting txt msg from ovi with a link to install. Any thoughts?
June 25, 2009
I ran into this problem last week and sent email to the Ovi Store support folks. There response was that AT&T is intentionally blocking the store. The note implied it was blocked in the firmware.

im trying to get the ovi store to work on my e71x and i am also getting that “device incompatible” and i changed connection to ‘operator’ and still that error can anyone give me advise how i can get it to work
I wouldn’t worry about it, there is nothing special about the Ovi Store yet and most apps probably won’t work on the E71x anyway. Buy apps just like the good old days, from the developers and rest easy knowing you have support from them.

So i did want to try the SMSChat app on ovi, however it will not let me on the site… i have tried every method this forum has (about 6 times over) offered and nothing. I have toggled between the connection methods and I am about to throw it. Any suggestions… Can I get this app from some other source? And does the E71x open zip files?

Hi. Great posts Matt. Thanks. I got my new AT&T E71x. I played with Ovi Maps. With your post, i could get it working. But unfortunately, my device is unable to connect to ovi store. I am getting incompatible device. Opening Shop apps, shows me empty page with index.wml in it. (Looks like the browser is not rendering wml file). I am totally unable to instal Mail for Exchange. Going through the setup opens up the ovi, and it doesnt install. It is getting really frustrating. I moved from my old N95(unlocked) to this. Also, is there a way to install the Nokia built in search app? I love that app, and so frustrated to see it is not there in the new E71x. Please give me some good news.
Thanks.

Hey. I went to download an app on my new e71x. It said i needed to download ovi store so I followed the prompt and thought that I did just that. However I can not find the ovi store app anywhere on my phone. Can someone please help?
December 22, 2009
I am having the same problem. Did you get it resolved.

I’ve been having the same problem. Can anyone help?
March 9, 2010
you can install the ovi store but it won’t show up because of at&t’s blocking policy. you can go to App.Mgr. and see it’s installed.
