Nokia N900 update 1.2 now available in the US

Nokia N900 update 1.2 now available in the USI mentioned yesterday that the 1.2 update was rolling out in the UK for the Nokia N900, but that I was leaving on vacation so I didn’t think I would get it. I am leaving in a couple of hours, but saw the update appear on my N900 so I couldn’t resist updating my device. I did get a low memory available error, but simply turned off all my application catalogs (except for Nokia), restarted, and the update was applied. I like to live dangerously and did not create a backup first, as prompted, and just went for it with the update. It took about 10 minutes in total time to update my Nokia N900, but my device is now update and reads Version 10.2010.19-1.002.

I have only spent a couple of minutes with it, but have the following quick thoughts for you:

  • The custom positioning is not just for the first application screen, but all of your apps appear on the page and there is no longer a More apps 2nd screen. Everything appears on one, but I have not seen anyway to create folders for further organization.
  • The Ovi Maps interface and functionality is MUCH IMPROVED! I like the easy view toggle, much better directions setup interface, walking and driving directions entry screen, and more. I plan to test this out a lot more when I return. We now need offline Ovi Maps support so I can take my N900 when I leave the country.
  • I cannot figure out how to switch to portrait mode in the browser since rotating the display does not seem to do it.
What do you like in the update?

You have to enable rotation in the web browser settings and you have to have the keyboard closed for it to work.

Make sure you do a FULL BACKUp of your device first. When you finish updating the N900, Restore it w/ the FULL BACKUp, but make sure you UNCHECK – “SETTINGS” tab.

If you leave the settings tab on when restoring, the N900 will be excessively SLUGGISH.

@ramo tadab- Open your browser. At the top of the screen, click the menu bar, just to the left of the “x” to close the browser. After clicking this, a drop down menu will appear, click on “settings.” There will be an option for auto-rotation. Another browser feature that changed is the back button. When clicking, it goes to the last visited page. If you want to see the visual browsing history, click and hold the back button.

The new games will be released sometime in the next week. They weren’t released with the 1.2 update. As for the IMing, I haven’t tried any of that yet so I can’t help.

@Daniel: Did you back-up and restore your data (in-place upgrade) or was it a clean install?

If it was a clean install, you’ll need to download the pidgin plugin’s again for your im. Sign in via your login information and it should work like usual.

Cant help you with Qstradict though.

@daniel: i have the same problem, when i click on New IM i get ‘No Contacts’ those contacts are actually listed in Contacts (phonebook) now. i actually like how the old firmware listed my buddy list of the Conversation Service i log into by clicking New IM rather than grouping all into Contacts with my phone contacts, which can get lengthy and messy.

When I capture video and then press “share via service” the media player immediately closes and the screen says “Internal Error Application Media Player Closed” It only does this with videos I record with the n900, it does not do this with movies I imported into it. Not happy :(
