Nokia N900 tips & tricks: Tether with your Windows PC through PC Suite
One of the things I use my smartphone for from time-to-time is tethering when I am waiting for extended periods and want a larger keyboard and display experience than what I can find on my smartphone. Given that the Nokia N900 is a Maemo 5 device with just a few apps and utilities I didn’t even think to try to figure out how to tether it for the last week. I finally pulled my head out and realized that the N900 connects to Windows PCs with Nokia PC Suite and there is a native USB modem driver found in PC Suite. I connected my N900, launched PC Suite, clicked on the One Touch Access icon and away I went. Using my T-Mobile 3G SIM and N900 I saw download speeds between 230 and 260 kbps, but this wasn’t in a particularly well populated area. I need to conduct some more tests in strong signal zones.
The good thing is that this tethering capability is supported and is drop dead easy to use on a PC. There is no PC Suite for the Mac so I am not sure if you can connect a Mac to the N900 yet.

I saw this video yesterday, you can do the same with Macs, only it’s a little bit trickier: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vSqGSG9riU

What about tethering via Bluetooth? Is the Bluetooth working properly on your review unit?
the bluetooth was not working on the demos…accross the board. i would guess that it should be fine in the final release.
more about tethering capability …

Hi!
I have ordered an N900 and now I’m wondering if it’s possible (or how) to copy (move) all the information I have on my old phone (gallery, sms, phonebook, calender etc) to the N900?
I was really easy when I did it from my N80 to my N95 8gb, but they are both symbian. How will it work with (symbian to maemo) when I get my N900 and want to move everything from my N95 8gb to the new N900?
I would appreciate it if you could help me out here!

Look at JoikuSpot.

It turns your N900 (or whatever phone you install it on) into a WiFi hotspot. No need for a cable, or any kind of setup. Install the app, start it, connect to it from your PC. VOILA!
This makes the N900 internet usable from all OSs (that can use a WiFi NIC), not just Windows.
I am trying to tether my N900 to my lapbook via the usb cable I select PC suite mode but then I’m stuck. You mention clicking the one touch access icon but I can’t seem to find this. Please can you explain this in a bit more detail I have only had the ohone for 2 days and still finding my way around. thanks Teresa

If you are using Nokia Suit 7.1. Select the Globe icon (Green color) that says “Connect to Internet”. Btw. I managed to get my N900 works as a modem on my WIn7 notebook.
Good luck

@minime
I transferred my old data from nokia n95 to the n900 using Transfer & Sync.
Lemme explain it in as simple a manner as possible: Switch on the bluetooth on both devices, the n95 and the n900 Go to settings in the n900 and select Transfer & Settings. Choose Synchronize Data and it will ask you the device you want to sync it from, choose the n95 and the devices will pair over bluetooth pairing (after you enter the device code that appears for pairing to happen)
Hope it helps
Cheers!

@ disha
You will need to download the PC Suite software from nokia’s site and instal it on your laptop / desktop. You can then connect your device via the datacable or bluetooth

i’ve spent more than a few hours trying to workout how to connect my n900 to my (non interent connected) pc, in he end i downloaded pc suite to my n900 then connected it to the pc via a the usb, it then auto installed pc suite from within my n900.(off topic but why did nokia not give an install disk with the thing anyway?!) then followed the “connect to” instructions from within PC suite…
now, for after my good deed (cash in the karma chips and all that)is there anyone who can help with my next problem, though my pc is not internet connected i have wifi for my laptops etc, anyone out there know the settings so that rather than running the internet off my 3g sim card, i can use the n900 as a wifi modem when connected?
im not interested in making it a wifi hotspot as it’s the data charges im trying to keep down…..
