Nokia N900 tips & tricks; Use your N900 as a modem for your Apple Mac

Nokia N900 tips & tricks; Use your N900 as a modem for your Apple MacI previously wrote about connecting your new Nokia N900 with your Windows PC using the Nokia PC Suite software. While waiting for my daughter’s soccer practice to finish and working in my car, I decided to try to figure out how to connect the N900 to my MacBook Pro instead of popping my SIM into my T-Mobile Touch Pro2. After remembering some connections from the good old days of tethering and a bit of trial and error, I figured it out and am cruising along at the same speeds I mentioned in my Windows PC article.

The steps actually turned out to be quite easy as you can see below. This method works for T-Mobile USA:

  1. Connect your Nokia N900 via USB cable to your Mac
  2. Select Nokia PC Suite mode from the pop-up on your N900
  3. Mac Network settings should appear; enter *99# as telephone number
  4. Click on the Advanced button, and go to Modem tab
  5. From the Model drop down, select GPRS (GSM/3G)
  6. Enter epc.tmobile.com as the APN
  7. Leave everything else as default and click on OK
  8. Click on Connect to get connected
You should also be prompted to save these settings and go ahead and save as N900 modem or something.

I also checked the “Show modem status in menu bar” since that gives you an easy way to manage the connection right from the upper menu bar.

You should now be off and running with your Mac and Nokia N900. You can probably do this same thing via Bluetooth, but the battery life will take a major hit and you should probably use it via USB so you can charge your N900 as you surf the Internet.

Molly recently asked me how to get this working with AT&T and I understand that some of you have the N900 with your AT&T account. Understand the following settings will let you connect your N900 with AT&T, but your speeds will be EDGE and not 3.5G like you get with T-Mobile USA. That said, here are the steps you need to take:

  1. Connect your Nokia N900 via USB cable to your Mac
  2. Select Nokia PC Suite mode from the pop-up on your N900
  3. Mac Network settings should appear; enter *99# as telephone number
  4. Enter the following under account name: ISP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
  5. Enter the following under password: CINGULAR1
  6. Click on the Advanced button, and go to Modem tab
  7. From the Model drop down, select GPRS (GSM/3G) with a vendor as General or Nokia (if available)
  8. Leave everything else as default and click on OK
  9. Click on Connect to get connected
Enjoy your Nokia N900.

My AT&T tethering stopped working today! Windows 7 says that I get no dial tone. I wonder if AT&T got wise (but I definitely have not been using it very much), or if it’s a techie problem on my end (perhaps due to upgrading to PR1.1).

Hey thanks for information in simple steps. But I have one more question, with this method I can connect AT&T network.

How do I get connection to wireless network? If a mobile is on Wi-Fi network, and I connect it to laptop its still connect thru AT&T network not through wireless network.

Now, this use case is not totally absurd as I have a desktop without wireless card. If could just connect to WLan it will be cool.

I have spent days trying to connect my PC & MAC, and it keeps asking me to subsribe to a different plan, it says my plan does not support it. MY question is, do I need to upgrade to $30 plan for this tethering to work? thanks

thanks for getting this to work!

My connection is much slower than when I connected via an verizon express card – guess that is a given with a USB connection.

Even sharing my verizon express card connection with another laptop via airport … even that is faster than the nokia USB connection …

Glad it works though.
