Nokia N900: The more I see, the more excited I get about it

I’ll be posting some thoughts soon on the keynote announcements made at Nokia World today in Germany, but in the meantime I thought you would enjoy the video below that Rene, from The iPhone Blog, forwarded to me showing a detail hands-on with the exciting Nokia N900. As you will soon see in my comments there was nothing at Nokia World that excites me more than the N900 and I think it is probably one of the only things that has the chance of coming to the US as a subsidized (aka lower initial price) device.

Looking at the specs of the N900 and how fluid and smooth it runs I think Apple will need to come up with an updated UI next year if it wants to lead in this category. Don’t forget, the N900 is running with a resistive display too so imagine what we may see in 2010 from Nokia with a capacitive display and further refined Maemo UI.

“Impressive. Most impressive!” – Darth Vadar, Empire Strikes Back

That interface is hot. iPhone can’t touch it. Nor can Android running Hero Sense UI (sniff, sniff). Pre isn’t even in the running. Anyway, I’m getting jealous. I’ve been scoping this out for my wife but I’m feelin’ it for myself now.

Nokia better not screw this up like they did the E62 when they brought it to Cingular. “If” they bring it to a major carrier, don’t neuter it like they did the E62 (but I guess that has more to do with the carrier than Nokia). And if they do bring it state-side, they need to market, market, market it. If they use the same slickness in making a commercial as they did with the N97 then I think we’ll finally have a – dare I say it? – “iPhone Killer”.

nokia needs to get this subsidized on att (or verizon but let’s stick with gsm) – they can’t expect to sell this in bulk unlocked at $700. T-mob won’t be enough. C’mon nokia – complete the deal: you’ve done a great technical job, now have it make business sense!

My god, and Nokia is saying they will allow root access without the need to jailbreak. This is a game changer folks. Apple is pretty much done at this point if Nokia can get this thing into our market in the next little while.

Very slack nokia ! No WCDMA/UMTS 850mhz ! shame shame shame. The only network I have available here and the N900 won’t accept it. A disappointed die hard nokia fan.

Nokia N900 deals
December 8, 2009

We are still waiting for some Nokia N900 deals, despite being promised some sort of release info regarding contracts since November. Is there any hope for anyone other than lucky early adopters getting a glimpse of the Nokia N900’s mobile computer love? Any word of an official release, in terms of simply going into a store and buying one?
