Is the Nokia N9 the next flagship product?

Nokia has been pretty clear that the upcoming Nokia N8 device is NOT its next flagship product. That said, we haven’t heard any official word about what actually is the next flagship to follow the Nokia N97. I am hoping we hear something about this at Nokia World in a few weeks and according to what was posted by Clinton Jeff on ZOMGitsCj it may just be the Nokia N9 MeeGo device. If it is, then that will be quite exciting as these leaked pictures show a device with a QWERTY keyboard that reminds me a lot of my MacBook Pro keyboard. You know if it runs MeeGo then I will be buying one to replace my N900. It is pretty clear this is an actual Nokia N9, but it still is not clear if this is some kind of prototype or if it is the real deal.

It looks like it builds on the N8 metal form factor with that cool N97/N97 mini slide and tilt up display. The keyboard looks awesome to me with well spaced keys, large space bar, directional arrows, dual Shift keys, and more. I WANT THIS, do you?

To answer your question Yes I WANT this.

Trying not to get too excited about it since it hasn’t been announced and I’m still going to get a Nokia N8 which looks like an awesome camera phone but this thing really does look like the mobile computer that Nokia have been talking about and is exactly what I’ve been searching for.

Can’t wait till Nokia World. Expecting to hear about the N8 (i should have one by then), C7 and now the N9 is there anything else they might surprise us with?

Nokia CLEARLY read my comment yesterday ;).

This is MUCH better, and if it pans out I will be purchasing this.

YES! YES! This would be a good replacement of the bulky N900.

So far good. Some seem to hate the design, some seem to like it. I’m thakfully on the camp who loves that design. That might change to more positive when we get the actual device like it did with the N8.

Happy to see them go all metal lately on their phones. Zune HD have already teached me how durable the aluminium can be.

Still this part is the minor one. Yet to see what UI it truly got under there(yes i know the leaks) and what’s the exact hw spec.

Only real disappointment is that it doesn’t have the off-center space bar. I much prefer that in slide-out keyboards.

Nokia is smart. By not claiming it as a flaghship device, if/when it flops, they can wipe their hands clean. Unlike the N97. Well done Nokia!

Not sure if I like this one. Its too plain. Reminds me of the Motorola Devour (http://www.verizon-phones.org/verizon-motorola-devour-new-verizon-android-phone-coming-out-in-march.html).

If this is the supposed flagship, what’s the point of getting the N8? In a couple of months, N8 and Symbian^3 will become obsolete.

is the communicator form factor completely abandoned by nokia. I still look forward to that form factor and willing to compromise with the OS. Meego is basically a mini computer with a cell phone n i think no other form factor would do justice to it.

I wish the keys were a little closer like the n900 or droid…

Very good timing, Nokia. Announced the N8 months ago, then when preorders are finally possible announce the N9. You will never sell phones this way because the moment people can buy one phone you come up with “hey, just in a few months there will be an even better phone”. So people will wait. Or buy something else.

Rumor in the street: the next Nokia flagship phone will have a flexible screen – totally new technology.

Flexible screen… lighter? Less prone to breaking/scratching? At the moment, don’t all capacitive screens have a glass front?

Another rumor on the street: We won’t see a Nokia Flagship in a few years until they get their priorities in order.

With so many amazing android devices out now, in just about every size and form factor, it’s getting harder and harder to get excited about Nokia, and their OS roulette wheel. Honestly, I really wish they would just move to android, so they could focus on the wonderful hardware they do so well.

Android is Java, and Java is not what clued-up users want. As someone who has used all the Nokia ITs, and is now a N900 user, the N9 is likely a must have.

If the leaks are correct and the N9 has 768MB to run MeeGo in and a decent graphics accelerator, then it’s surely the way forward. Open source MeeGo will wipe the floor with Android in a few short years.

But the N9 is just another step on the road to x86 in the shirt pocket. 22nm geometry might just do this, but x86 is coming anyway. So.. sometime in the 2010’s, and probably sooner rather than later. And, of course, the first such devices will have a Nokia labels on them! 😉
