Nokia N8 Q&A: here are some answers to your questions

N8First18There are a lot of questions since the N8 devices are not out in people’s hands yet and I will try to answer them as best as I can. I appreciate all that you are asking since helping people out is the reason I spend time on this site. Let’s jump right into it and look at some answers to your many questions:

  1. How is the sound quality from headphones? I loaded up lots of Zune music and other songs and have been listening to and enjoying music. I am not an audiophile, but it sounds great to me.
  2. How does the display look in sunlight? Surprisingly, we have had some nice sunny days here in Washington State so I was able to test this out. Even though the N8 has an OLED display, it is actually quite viewable in full sunlight and blows away the display on the Google Nexus One.
  3. Is text reflow supported in the browser? ┬áNope, the browser is still the same version 7.1 seen in S60 5th Edition (Symbian^1). Nokia stated they will be providing an updated browser, but we don’t know exactly when that will happen. In the meantime, I have installed Opera Mobile on the N8 and have it set to the default browser because it does support text reflow and has a QWERTY keyboard in portrait orientation. To set Opera Mobile as the default browser go to Settings>Application settings>Default applications>Browsing internet and select Opera Mobile as the default browser.
  4. How does the Swype beta work on the N8? Unfortunately, there is only a private beta of Swype available and once I get my own N8 I can give it a try. Also, due to Nokia’s firmware limits you can currently only use the beta in landscape orientation so there is no portrait keyboard support.
  5. Are the Bloomberg and Acuweather apps available for the N8 homescreen? You can download Bloomberg and AccuWeather from the Ovi Store. BTW, the Ovi Store is MUCH improved on the N8.
  6. Have you tried out Ovi Maps on this phone yet? Yes and I actually installed the latest beta from the Nokia Beta Labs site and it works very well on the N8.
  7. Is there a Google Maps app for the N8? Yes, Google Maps works very well and looks great. I like having both Ovi Maps and Google Maps on the device and use both.
  8. Are there other PIM alternatives? Like an alternative calendar, task manager, etc.? I understand that Handy Calendar is under development for S^3, but I haven’t yet found any alternatives.
  9. Does tethering (via Joikuspot) work on the device yet? Yes, Joikuspot for S60 works just fine.
  10. Does the new M4E support global address book lookups? Yes, it is integrated into the area where you enter an email address.
  11. How is the built-in instant messaging app vs. 3rd party apps like Nimbuzz? I don’t see any integrated IM capability, but have loaded up and like using Nimbuzz. Nimbuzz works fine on the N8.
  12. I just wish to know is it possible for me to connect the Standard TV out cable to get the TV out as if we do in N97 mini rather than the HDMI? See my post that verifies that TV out works via HDMI and the 3.5mm headset jack.
  13. How is Quickoffice on the N8? Quickoffice is installed on the N8, but like all previous Nseries devices it is only the viewer with the option to upgrade to the full version for creation of Office documents. I personally wish it was like the Eseries where you get the full monty to start with though.
  14. Are emails forwarded as attachments or inline text? When you select to forward an email, it appears as inline text with your response beginning above the email text you are forwarding. I could not find any setting to change this and assume this is the only option.
  15. When will Nokia N8 US pre-orders ship? Your guess is as good as mine and probably as good as customer service is able to give us. The banner said shipping this week, so if they ship like the Q3 shipments did then they should go out tomorrow, 8 October, but I honestly am not counting on that happening :(

Please let me know if you have more questions as I continue to test out the N8.

Hi Matt,

Can you check if Profimail from Lonelycatgames works on N8 ? Also, did you check the Quickoffice on N8 ?

I posted in the other forum but did not get a response… Can you please tell us about the email forwarding on the new nokia messaging… email forwards are sent as an attachment or are they inline forwards such as ios?

Sorry Cynthia. I saw that one and meant to include it. Please check above and see my answer to your question. I personally prefer forwards this way myself, how about you?

Hi, Matthew, I would like to know if the birthdays in the contacts show up on the calender, and if you can adjust the default camera settings (i.e. start camera, saved settings are ready for use), I can’t figure out either of these on the N97.

October 7, 2010

Thanks Matthew! This is great. Up until now, all email forwards on Nokia emails would be an attachment. I prefer this new way much more. Hopefully they are working on a new update that would let us forward emails as full HTML, that way my supervisor can’t tell when I am sending an email from my desk and when I am away :-)

Did your N8 ship yet? Its almost the end of the week!

Does SPB Mobile Shell work on the N8? for those days when eye candy is needed.
also when adding content to the homescreens can you leave spaces inbetween? for example if I was only to use up 5 of the rectangles can I put one at the bottom or does it move it up.

Does the n8 support Amazon On Demand videos? Thanks.

This is a phone – what is the phone call quality and signal like?

October 7, 2010

Any chance that they’re updated Mail for Exchange to support multiple Exchange accounts?

What is web browsing like on the N8? Comparable to other high-end phones like the iPhone 4 or HTC Desire? I’m worried that Nokia chose an antiquated ARM11 core for the N8/C7/C6/E7 instead of Cortex-A8/Snapdragon like everyone else. Any chance of a web-browser speed test over WiFi?

I was gonna put in the pre-order, and just noticed the site says N8 shipping this week, but the dark grey ships next week? Isn’t dark grey the only one you can order now? If they don’t ship that this week, then what’s being shipped this week??

What’s the deal with Nokia.

October 8, 2010

I have a very technical question, which will define if I stay with Nokia or switch to another system.

How is the storage memory organized?

I have a N97, and it has a C:, E: and F: disks.

C: has 0,12 gigabytes, and E: has 32 gigabytes

Nokia Messaging for N97 uses C: to store messages, hard coded. Wooooow!!!!!

You get the point: it clogs the C: drive in a couple of days on a serious mail user.

Does the same happens with the N8 ?????????????????

Thanks for looking into that for me.

Thanks for this post! Clarified a few things that are typically not addressed in most reviews!

Can you comment on the N8’s Exchanger server support PUSH etc. I believe it exists but I’m not sure wanted ot make sure before I plunked down the cash.

October 9, 2010

@Oliver: I dont use Nokia messaging so cant comment on that but the C is 512MB (Samsung K5W4G2GACA – AL54 (CPU + DDR RAM + NAND ROM),
while the E is 16GB (Toshiba THGBM1G7D4FBA13 K23538).

With the 256MB RAM, so far you only get memory errors if there are severe leaks in the application. Those written for s3, along with the optimizations in s^3 are making it difficult to recreate similar errors of the original n97’s.

Hope that helps.

@Red Munk: Thanks for the information. I am scared to know that the same achitecture seem to be replicated…

Just one idiot in Finland who does not understand what is an e-mail application in the 21st century and I will buy another paperweight. Oh Gosh….what a risk.

One full week of full hand-on before any purchase decision.I am fed up with all the n97 stupidities. Tons of…

October 9, 2010

@Red Munk: The issue is, actually, that the application Nokia Messaging (10 accounts) is installed in the C: disk (128 MB, 20 MB left free) and the mails are stored also in the C disk (hard-coded).

If only the mails were stored in the mass memory (E:), that solves the issue. 32 GB of space for mails is ok for me.

This is the picture of an N97. If the N8, C7 or whatever does the same mistake…

I like to lay on my side while using my phone in portrait mode, so I turn the sensors off, is this an option on the N8? It doesn’t seem like it since the virtual qwerty only appears in landscape. Is the touch input (drawing the letters with your finger) from S^1 an option? I would choose that over the virtual T9 in portrait.

whoa whoa whoa. In #4 you say the Swype beta can only be used in landscape?! Are you sure? If so, that’s a major fail.

Matthew Miller
October 11, 2010

Sorry Ricky, it’s true at this time. I talked with the folks here in Seattle at Swype directly and they gave me this info. I understand that it is related to the OS and there is nothing they can do about it until Symbian/Nokia make some changes.

When my own device arrives, I get a beta version of Swype to try out so stay tuned for more on this.

I have Handy Calendar working on my C7. The only difficulty was in handling multiple calendars. It seems to take thye ‘personal’ calendar as default so that takes some creative use of calendar management in the Symbian Celnadr programme

I have had my N8 for 3 weeks now and am having a problem answering incomming calls. 50% of the time when I press the grren answer icon it just does not respond. Once the caller has disconnected I then then call the person back. Very irritating. Has anyone encountered this problem? Should I just upgrade to the latest software or take it in?

I have a problem with Quickoffice in N8

Before I updated, I can open file .doc and .docx size about 1 -3 MB, but after updated I cant open them. When I select the file, 1 box appears and show Opening as usual. however, after loading 100%, nothing appears. I tried to let the phone in 1h to file’s text appear but it didnot happen. After long time, about 10mins, a box show the type of file is not supported, update?

I dont know why becoz I usually open file word from 1MB or more to read. but now I cant. size of file is about 40kb open normally.

Help me please~ thank u so much!
