Nokia N8 firmware PR 1.1 available, this is not the BIG one
I just read over on All About Symbian that a minor firmware update is available now for the Nokia N8. Unfortunately, this is NOT the one we have all been waiting for with the new web browser and portrait QWERTY keyboard support, but it does look to improve some aspects of the device.
The changelog, as posted by All About Symbian, includes:
- Web updated to 7.2.8.10
- Quickoffice updated to 6.4.166, editing functions now enabled on the N8 (i.e. don’t have to pay to upgrade), improved zooming functions
- Adobe Reader updated to 2.5.653
- Big update to Nokia Email; performance improved; ‘unread emails’ flag added to homescreen widget; meeting requests can be accepted directly from email invitations; maps integration, which means people can view the meeting location on the map when the address is mentioned in the location field in the invite
- General performance improvements
- Dialer now works in landscape mode
- Previous performance updates are rolled in and, in the full (Ovi Suite-installed, >100MB) image, there’s the facility to provide a better working starting point than hard resetting a PR 1.0 device
I plan to perform the update this morning, but REALLY want to see the 2.0 update with the improved browser and QWERTY keyboard support. I am not seeing it available yet, but will keep trying. Make sure to access the Device Manage by entering *#0000# in the dialer to check for the update. You can also go to /Settings/Phone/Phone management/Device updates to check for the update. This update WILL NOT be found in Software Updates, which is where I went first too

havent seen this on my N8 yet, i’m in the seattle area on t-mobile
Shayne, I haven’t seen it yet either and keep refreshing the software update utility. I am going to look around and see if there is a manual way to get it too.

I’ll keep trying as well, with the ovi suite and the device updater. I’ll let post when I see it; unless, of course, you beat me to it.
In So Cal with T-Mobile and I too do not see an update for my N8 when using *#0000# or Device Update search in phone settings. Even tried the old Nokia Software Updater and it says my phone is up to date.

IPORTANT unistall first the old version of quick office before install the new firmware to get the new one, or reinstall the firmware after unistall the quickoffice program.

I checked about 30 minutes ago (2/8/2011 1030AM MLA) and the update is visible both in software updates and Ovi suite. Did a back-up thru the Ovi suite and updated. *I recently downloaded Nokia Bubbles and that still seemed to be working. *not sure what was updated in the web browser…hmmm… have to play with it some more. Definitely not the split-screen keyboard–which should be here on PR2? *quick office is updated. need to test that some more. To be honest, I never had the need to read/edit/create office docs on my phone, so I’ll play with it some more.
Right now, I’m running it with 10 apps open (maps, music, camera, social, opera mobile, photos, calendar, videos, conversations and nimbuzz) and it seems to still be pretty responsive.

Since I am a noob to the Nokia and symbian what I have gathered so far is the firmware can be obtained with a program called Navifirm and installed with Phoenix. Firmware version 13.16 is up there for North America devices as of 2/8. I have downloaded it but unsure how to burn with Phoenix. An Australia version is also posted ( that is if I am understanding this all correctly )

One thing I’ve noticed with the new firmware that I haven’t seen anyone else mention is that the vibra-touch works in power saving mode now (for me anyway) I usually keep my phone in power saving mode as I am sometimes unsure of when my next charge will be and I noticed that in power saving mode you didn’t get the great vibration when pressing something onscreen to let you know you’ve actually pressed correctly, now the lowest level of vibration is available in p.s.m. which is fine for me! Great subtle addition.

I have been trying for many days now but just get the message that no updates are available. Very sad. I live in Malaysia.

Nokia, almost game over. show what you got. NOW!!! (or never)
Nokia should come with something te very soonest. The reason is simple, the offer for high quality communication devices is hugh, gigantic, massive and immense. Just look at what competitors have to offer, for example, at the MWC 2011 in Barcelona.
Thus, why should consumers wait for Nokia? Even die hard Nokia fans cannot wait anymore. Why? Because they love high quality devices/smartphones and there is lots of it to choose from, NOW, at this very moment. A big negative point from Nokia is that they cannot give a specific date for introducing….just something.
I am very confident that Nokia will come with a range of new and competitive devices in the early second quarter of 2011. And if not, they sould come with a new, fresh and astonishing upgrade of its Symbian3 platform. Just to show what they can. Overall, it is important for Nokia to come up with ….something… very soon.
A lifeless Nokia is a hugh market for competitors,….even big old Microsoft.
