First look at Nokia Email on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic device

I’ve been using and thoroughly enjoying the Nokia Email client on my Nokia E71, especially when compared to the rather lame standard Nokia Messaging application that is included on S60 devices. I LOVE the new Nokia Messaging 2.0 application on the Nokia E75, but that isn’t yet available for any other S60 device. I am really enjoying my Nokia 5800, but the lack of a good email client has been holding me back a bit and I have been making due with the Java-based Gmail application. All of that changed last night when I received an email from the Nokia Messaging team about an offer to test out Nokia Email on the 5800 and I jumped at the chance. It is still in alpha mode, but so far it is running quite well.

I took a short video walking through the new email client/service and also have several screenshots from my 5800 below.

As you can see, all the great UI elements seen before on S60 3rd Edition devices are present here in this version. There are some nice features optimized for the touchscreen too, including a button for attachments, button for sending priority, button for flags, button for replying or forwarding, and cool Groups email support.

Tapping and holding menus are also present in the application. If you tap and hold on an email in the Inbox then you see a menu with options to Delete, Reply, Reply all, Forward, Mark unread, Flag, and Move. You can tap a button in the upper right to sort your Inbox by Subject, Date, Sender, Flag, Priority, Unread, and Attachment. Tapping and holding on an email address gives you options for Send e-mail, Call, Add to contacts, Copy to clipboard, and View details.

All of these options and features really make email a pleasure again on the Nokia 5800 and I am quite pleased so far.

oh, I need that. I would love to test this out. The 5800 seems to be a testing ground for the n97. I like how every few weeks I gain new functionality out of the phone.

I’ve tried Nokia eMail on my E71 but I cant find a way to have one ID and password for receiving mail, and a different log in and password for sending. You can do this on the standard built in messaging client, so I would have thought it was possible on the new one. I also dont like the idea of having to pay for the push part of the service.

Are email notifications displayed on the home screen? Can’t wait for this one!

By the demo I still don’t understand why symbian has a hard to use selection, only one by one (while clicking options > multiselection > mark) or a mark all.

Why not a Multiselection mode, like they have with icon Organization. This way a simple tab on it email could select each email.

Just don’t get it.

Matthew,
I am using the latest Nokia Email version in my E71 (I guess is not the same as in the E75). This client allows to add more than one mailbox, and I could do that if the mailboxs are GMail or Yahoo. But, because my company uses Intellisync when I activate this type of account I cannot add a second account with GMail and vice-versa. Until now, I could not find no one in Nokia forums or discussions to answer if it is in purpose or just a software bug…

@Mariano
The Intellisync Client and the Nokia Messaging client use some of the same components under the hood, so they cannot be used together.
It is possible to add personal accounts to the corporate server, but your admin needs to enable that, and it means all of your personal mail will be going through your company server which may be an issue for you.

Anyone who’s received a 5800 recently from a US retailer, ie Dell/Newegg/Amazon, does it still have the earpiece problem mentioned here: http://thesymbianblog.com/2009/03/02/an-investigation-into-the-nokia-5800s-earpiece-woes/

The email client on the 5800 is probably the most useless piece of !@#$!@#$ that I have ever seen. I do not know where you get the screen dumps from, on mine the email is setup, I have tested receiving email. but when I try to send the email stay in the outbox and never get send, the settings is set to send immediate but I doubt the the F!@#$ ers at Nokia understand what the mean. There is no option to send and receive. For I great phone this is a tru F up

RE: Irratated.

Goto email.nokia.com
Setup your email account setting on line at the nokia site, and then download the new nokia email via via the link they txt you.

You then just use the email setup wizard and it retrieves the setting from the nokia site.

Works great (and is the same app shown in screen shots above)

Just setup on my 5800 and is 100% better than the default messaging client.

Free….at the moment too.
