Nokia E71x now works with Ovi Maps 3.0 beta!

I’ve written about how to get Nokia Maps 2.0 up and running on your Nokia E71x and hope you have been successful. Today Nokia announced further support for Ovi Maps (they changed the name to match their services branding) 3.0. I immediately went to the Nokia Beta Labs site and followed the process to get Nokia Maps 3.0/Ovi Maps on my E71x.

nokiamaps3

I am pleased to say that so far Ovi Maps 3.0 runs like a champ on the E71x and even the * and # for zooming in and out now works! One of the best features in Ovi Maps 3.0 is the ability to send addresses/destinations to your Ovi Maps account in advance and then have the ability to easily select this on your device for quick routing. With the online site you can create favorites and even group them into collections for better organization. I created one called Danika soccer and put in all the destinations for her games so I can easily find them on my E71x when we play on the weekends.

I also like the new Dashboard screen that shows me speed, pace, altitude, and Lat/Long position.

As stated in the press release:

The latest version of Ovi Maps application on your device is enhanced through additional features and services, opening up a new world of possibilities with better maps than ever before: high resolution satellite and terrain maps – both in 2D and 3D views – 3D landmarks for over 200 cities, rotation, tilting, night view, and fly-overs and fly-throughs. Ovi Maps also offers enriched POI information by Lonely Planet, Michelin and Wcities, as well as a weather service that provides 24 hour and 5-day forecasts. Walk from one place to another by using Walk, pedestrian navigation with routing optimized for those on foot, providing better orientation in a city or outdoors. Or use Drive, fully fledged car navigation with enhanced safety and real-time traffic information covering now more countries.

With Ovi Maps on the web you can also search for addresses and POIs, find places and save them into Favorites, and organize them into Collections. Check the weather situation and preplan routes for walking or driving – and then save them. Your places, collections and routes can also be synchronized over-the-air between Ovi Maps on your compatible mobile device and Ovi Maps on the web.

They also released their Ovi Maps Player API so that developers can embed Ovi Maps into websites.

Just downloaded this to E71x. Only played with it for a bit but much better than 2.0! Interface seems much fast, GPS actually tries to lock on quicker, no search bar on screen means more actual map space to see.

Thumbs up!

This is really a smart cell phone. Ovi Maps is something never heard of. There are lots of advantages running Ovi Maps on the Nokia E71x. I am looking forward towards using Ovi Maps on E71x.

Hey, I just got my E71x a few days ago and have been following these informative readings. For the Nokia Maps 3.0 I’ve been following the instructions on the download page but would always get stuck on the step where it says to connect the device to the computer and run the Nokia Maps Updater. The updater would give an error message saying that there is no supported phone connected! When I hit ‘try again’ it would get stuck trying to search for other connected phones. Any thoughts on this?

Hey jdreamer,

What I did was I installed the Nokia Maps 2.0 version first (use the 6650 Flip version). Then I downloaded the Nokia Maps Updater and installed that. The Maps Updater found the 2.0 installation and upgraded it to 3.0. I think you need to have the 2.0 version installed first.

Should this be installed on a memory card or the phone memory?

Thanks Moogle, I think I have it figured out. While I still don’t have it working, I think the most probable reason(s)are:1) I have not yet bought a memory card and it requires a lot of memory and 2) I didn’t have any version of Maps running when I used the maps updater. I did end up finding a .sis file for direct installation of Maps 3.0 onto my phone though, but again I don’t have a memory card to see if it would solve the problem of me not having enough memory to run it. Thanks again for the reply!

I had to install 2.0 for the 6550, then 3.0 from a direct download link: http://www.e71blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/NokiaMaps3.003023.2_u.sis

I had to install 3.0 OVER 2.0.. then it worked.

Nokia maps updater does not find my phone. I have connected via USB in PC Suite mode.

PC Suite can see my phone but Maps Updater cannot…

Nokia is charging around 120$ a year for its use, this seems to be too much. are there any other alternatives?

Hi guys, Thanks a lot for the information regarding Maps 3.0. I just downloaded it and for some reason navigation voce prompt does not work. It navigate you to the place, but no voice guidance. I tried to change between English UK and English US, but no luck. Does anyone knows what might be the problem? Thanks a lot

When I run Nokia maps updater to install 3.0 from the OVI site, I get the “No supported phone installed” dialog. I tried installing nokia maps 2.0 from http://tamale.pwnij.com/e71x/ in the e71x browser, and was able to run it once. But I still got the “No supported phone installed” dialog upon trying to install 3.0. So I installed the 3.0 version directly from http://tamale.pwnij.com/e71x/ and now I get the error “Not enough memory to start the application” when I try to run the Maps application. I don’t have a microSD card yet, but when I plug the phone into my computer it says I have 91mb of 125mb free, so methinks they’re not talking about flash memory.

TM, I’m having precisely the same issue. I’ve cleaned off every single piece of installed bloat-ware according to Matt’s instructions on another thread and still got the same thing. I had initially left a couple of things, but went back and took all of it, un-installed a couple of other apps I’d put on and it still won’t work right for me.

For whatever reason, I re-downloaded the installer from here: http://www.e71blog.com/category/applications/page/2/ today and tried it out. Magically, it worked. The loader also recognized the phone this time too. Repeated attempts prior were unsuccessful, but this one worked and I had installed A LOT of apps in the meantime. Memory wasn’t the issue. Try this out and see if it works for you if you were having trouble with 3.0.

Hi guys, Sorry it was some time since I posted my question. Well I still have no luck running voice guided navigation within Maps 3.0 on Nokia e71x. Maps 2.0 works great, but I wanted to have advantages of 3.0, like OVI sync etc. I do have active US licence and as i said v 2.0 works fine. Does anyone knows what can I do to fix this? Thanks a lot in advance. Regards Gene

After having installed the 3.0 ovi maps and downloaded maps using maploader, I still have issues with getting GPS fix. The only time I see the position on my dashboard is when the E71x is connected to the PC using the USB. Otherwise, I never get the GPS fix. Does anyone have this same problem? Any clues as to what’s wrong?

Thanks

Thanks Kirk. I went to the main Nokia site http://europe.nokia.com/explore-services/maps/download-maps and downloaded the Map Updater for e71 (from the “Download Maps” link). I then ran the SetupNokiaMapsUpdater1.0.8.exe on my PC connected to the e71x via USB. That did the trick for upgrading my e71x from 2.0 to 3.0. After playing around for a few minutes it’s much more responsive, pretty, and useful than 2.0.

Thanks all for the tips on installing the Ovi Maps 3.0 over 2.0. I was also having the same “Not enough memory” error as TM and Kirk. After multiple failed reinstalls I found the following info on Nokia’s web site which fixed the problem. Hope it will help someone else as well.

Special Note: “Not enough memory to start the application” when attempting to open Maps 3.0 on your device – We have noticed that in some cases, Maps Updater does not fully delete the old map data on the memory card. In order to resolve this, go to your memory card (e.g. via File Manager) and delete the “Citiesâ” folder and “qf” file. After that, restart Maps 3.0.

This is explained in http://betalabs.nokia.com/betas/view/nokia-maps-30-ovi-maps, in the Download and Installation section. You should have read it.

I was having the “can’t find phone” install issues (E71x) by following the Nokia site instructions. Installing the v2 sis and then the v3.0 sis and then launching map updater worked – it updated to v3.01 and now I’m able to run app and download maps. Thanks for the tips and the .sis files to get things rolling.

Today, I went to TM site and download the version 2 and install it. Go to nokia maps update site and download the update software for E71 name “SetupNokiaMapsUpdater1.0.8″ and install it. Download also the Nokia Map Loader and load whatever map I want into the phone without any issue.

I just got my E71x a few days ago. Today I also went to TM’s site and downloaded and installed Ovi map v.2 and v.3. And then I installed “SetupNokiaMapsUpdater1.0.8″ and update it to v3.01. But when I used Nokia Map Loader, I kept getting message “..either you are using an old map version – then you must….., or you have never started your maps application – then you have to….” I dismissed this message and I kept seeing “waiting for phone” and “0 drives found”. Can someone please help with this? Thanks a lot

In response to March’s comment – I was having the same problem. What you need to do is connect the phone via USB cable in PC suite mode. DO NOT start maps as the instructions say. Start Map Loader. It should find your phone and you’ll be able to download your maps.

I cannot get the map loader to work at all. keep getting the error message about having “older version of maps or not having started the maps software” – both errors are incorrect. I have ever only installed version 3.0 of OVI maps… reading the above suggestions i will uninstall 3, install 2, then install 3 over the top. The other painful issue i have is each time i start ovi maps – i get an error about how it cannot see/find my memory card – so it’s going to use the phone memory – which i am not ok with. Does anyone know how to make OVI install straight to the memory card instead of the phone by default? Also – does ovi require internet usage each time you use the program? If so – that won’t work for me – i’ll have a mobile bill in the hundreds of dollars.. thanks for all your help in advance

Hi,

I installed nokia maps 3.0 using the maps installer. However, the maps are very blurry once I try to zoom in. It appears that the entire map was not downloaded, since my memory card still has all the memory left.

How do I download and install the entire map?

Any pointers will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Arvind

January 25, 2010

If you are running Nokia Maps it will not cost anything to use. The phone is actually a GPS receiver so it does not need to connect to the network. As far as connecting to the store, I have only seen this when you are using navagation, or trying to drive a route. Hopefully someone will chime in if there is a work around for this.

Has anyone been able to get the new (and completely free) Ovi Maps installed onto the phone? There is a version released for the E72 (which is also Feature Pack 2) and it would be nice to get that one installed on the E71x because of the free voice and walking navigation.

Also, just running Nokia or Ovi maps does not cost anything, and does not require a data plan because you can load the maps onto the memory card using your computer. The search functionality and downloading over the air will use data, so that cost would have to be absorbed by whatever plan you have chosen.

Doesn’t AT&T force the E71x to get some sort of data plan with service? I thought they had classified it as a smartphone.

I have the Nokia E71x with Ovi Maps 3.03 and it works fine with voice navigation (even installed other languages too). I would recommend getting 2.0, then 3.0, then 3.03 (use the Nokia 6760 slide version found on the Nokia website as indicated by other users)
