Nokia E71x Q&A session; 19 May 2009

I continue to work on more E71x and S60 tutorial posts, but am also swamped at my day job so things may be a bit lighter here than the last couple weeks. I’ll try to make at least one Q&A post each week since there are so many questions coming in from all of you. Keep them coming and I’ll try to answer as many as I can and thanks for participating.

nokia-e71x-att

As you look through these questions, please feel free to leave your answers to the questions I have at the end that I was unable to answer or that you may have a different answer for.

Questions on the Nokia E71x

  1. Have you been able to get Mobbler to work on the AT&T brand Nokia E71x? I’ve been able to install and load it, but haven’t been able to get it to play. Any tip on this would be most helpful? Mobbler (version 0.04(5)) works just fine on my E71x. I chose the Operator (Proxyless) option to connect and did find that I had to plug in my headphones to hear the music the first time. So far, it has worked every time after that time though.
  2. I liked how my E62 would show the date and time on the display even when it was in standby mode, and it would kinda ‘jump’ around the screen randomly. Can I turn this on on the E71x somehow? The Nokia E71x doesn’t have this out of the box like the E71. However, I have Handy Weather installed and it puts up the date/time and local weather with black font on a gray background. I really like this capability and do wish the same press of the action button that works on the E71 worked on the E71x.
  3. I wrote about installng Nokia Sports Tracker and it seemed to work at first until I found it kicked me out when checking out some details. A reader sent in the following answer, “I posted this to the comments on the Q&A thread about the E71x but I thought I’d follow up because it was such an easy and elegant fix to the problem I posted (and you responded to) regarding the inability to open the Sport Tracker training diary on the E71x. Someone over at the Nokia Beta Labs suggested that because the E71x uses s60 v. 3.2 to download the sport tracker software for the E75. I used the US+LTA variant for the E75 and it now works flawlessly on my E71x. Thanks for the great site and I hope this helps others. Here’s a link to the original discussion. http://betalabs.nokia.com/forum/topic/2587″
  4. Some people have said they had issues installing some applications, can you help? One of the first things to check is to go into Settings>Application Manager and then select the left soft key (Options) and then Settings. Select All for software installation and Off for Online certificate check.
  5. What AT&T wireless network access point do you recommend connecting with? You will probably see MEdia Net (Internet) and Operator (Proxyless) pop-up when you go to connect in an application. I personally use Proxyless because I don’t want any limitations showing up in my connection, even though I am not sure that MEdia Net really locks much down. I have seen proxy connections limit Gmail and Opera Mini before and have had lots of success with the Proxyless connection.
  6. Hi, I just bought the e71x. Do you know of any way to turn off 3G so that any data access would be forced through the wireless connection? I have looked all over the device and cannot find any way to turn off the 3G and switch just to an Edge connection on the E71x.

Questions I don’t yet have answers for

  1. Many people are having the same issue with the Gmail client and other Java apps where the device keeps prompting them for access permissions to the network. When you go to Settings>Application Manager and then select Installed Apps you can select most installed applications and then choose settings. Some let you control the options in Network Access, but Gmail and others only have two options (Not allowed and Ask every time). Opera Mini lets me choose Ask first time so at least with Opera Mini I only get a single prompt during each usage session. I do not know how or if these can be changed.
  2. People are also having issues with Skyfire. I posted how it has been working for me and am still finding it launching and connecting just fine. I don’t know why so many others have issues, but am encouraged that the folks at Skyfire are working on a fix for the E71x.
  3. Several people are also asking about hacking the firmware to get the E71x working like the E71. I haven’t tried hacking any of my Nokia devices in the past and won’t try it on this device because I want to be able to respond to people’s questions about this device in its standard configuration. You may want to try Howard Forums for help with this.
  4. It seems many people are having issues setting up email and then having a bunch of blank folders appear. I saw this once right after I purchased my E71x and wonder if it is related to the XpressMail setup. I don’t remember doing anything specific, but I have none of these blank folders after deleting all of my XpressMail accounts.
  5. How do you dial letters like 1-800-FLOWERS in Nokia E71x? The Nokia E71 lets you do this, but I haven’t found anyway to do this yet on the E71x.

One question was about how to turn off 3G and force the phone to use wireless instead. I assume this means WiFi? If so, a program like Smart Connect (free for the E71) seems it would do the trick. I have a virtual access point set up with Smart Connect that will try to use various WIFI connections first before resorting to 3G. You seem to be correct regarding forcing an Edge connection over 3G. Doesn’t seem doable .

About the blank e-mail folders: I had this problem at first. I had a couple of e-mail accounts that I couldn’t delete, including one with a question mark by it.

I ended up having to do a hard reset of the phone (which I learned how to do from this blog), and those folders went away. I am currently using Nokia Messaging and Mail for Exchange, and the blank/unwanted e-mail accounts have not returned.

How do you do a hard reset? I had the blank folders and I ended up going to AT&T and exchanging the phone.

Why doesn’t the data cable charge your phone when it is connected to your computer?

I am really thinking about exchanging this phone. The WIFI doesn’t want to connect, it just connects and then 2 seconds later says refreshing and just keeps doing that. Apps do not seem to want to connect and it is annoying having to allow it to connect every 3 seconds. The email keeps saying connection timed out to the server. I just think there are some issues here with connections and this phone. Is anyone else frustrated with this yet?

Matt – how’s the camera quality vs. the E75? I know the E71x no longer has the purple tint the E71 had. Improved software or new hardware?

Jason
May 19, 2009

Steph,

I’ve had zero connection issues w/ my phone. I can see wifi signals down the block I never knew existed until a few days ago. Once I’m on my home or work WLAN it sticks.

Regarding my comment above about Smart Connect, now that I think about it, it shouldn’t be necessary with the E71x. The E71x has FP2 which has smarter connection options.. Smart Connect was offered free by Nokia as a stop gap measure because the E71 only has FP1.

Re: java asking permission to use the network: This is one of the things AT&T crippled in the E62. It may be another thing you can’t fix.

Re: dialing letters: The E62 let you dial letters by pressing and holding the CHR key when dialing. Is there a similar key on the E71x?

D.J.
May 19, 2009

Tom if that permission thing is something that AT&T crippled and is unable to be fixed, then this phone has failed for me already. Being able to use 3rd party apps is a must in this age of App Stores, and this amount of crippling is unacceptable. It sucks that AT&T did this, but it sucks worse that Nokia let them tarnish their name like this.

What I did to make sure that my E71x didn’t access any data through the 3G network is to call att customer service (you can do this by dialing 611 on your cell phone) and tell them to do disable it for your phone so that way you make sure that all the time you connect to the interent, all the data is through your wifi connection. The only drawback is that you won’t be able to receive picture messages, but it’s worth it to have the piece of mind that you won’t be charged the ridiculous data usage prices if you don’t have a data plan.

What app on the dekstop or on the E71/x do you use to get the screenshots of the handheld in your posts?

Matthew
May 20, 2009

AnotherMattfrom_CA, go into the Nokia Email client on your E71x. Select and open the Settings up then scroll down to the email account you want to delete. Press the left soft key (Options) and then select Remove mailbox. That should do it.

I think you can also go onto the website for Nokia Email and manage accounts there.

I’ve had my E71x since Friday. Overall please with a few exceptions, which are driving me nuts.

I’ve been unable to get the Mail for Exchange client to sync with my hosted Exchange server. Way to many hours being bounced from AT&T to Nokia to Starfield Technologies (aka GoDaddy.com) and still no sync. The error message is “Server requires Secure Connection” Security is on and logs show that the client does establish a connection with the exchange server… I’m able to connect with the phone’s browser using OWA and can also connect with XpressMail using the IMAP with SSL. Anyone have any ideas?

The address book will not show any of my contacts when the number of contacts exceeds approx 2,000. I can that they are there with PC Suite, the phone just won’t display them. My Nokia E61 has no problem with over 5,000 contacts.

It seems to me that AT&T is not aware of the business aspects of this phone, as they have crippled some of the key business features of the E71 and put in too many games that cannot be removed.

Overall, I love the phone, but I may have to move to an unlocked E71 just for the business features.

I’ve been unable to stream anything but video or Internet Radio. Shoutcast is out StreamAudio is no-go. Ustream.tv is not happening. i tried loading Mobbler, thinking it would install some new codecs…sadly, nothing changed. I have a support ticket open at StreamAudio. They’re trying to give me a hand with it. They want to know if the phone supports mp3 streaming… I’m surprised to hear use of “Operator” connection will enable any sort of Internet connection. and ALSO, I’d like to hear more about the Hard Reset procedure. Maybe I screwed something up?

I get the following error message on my e71x when I power on, right after the nokia intro screen…”Phone start-up failed. Contact the retailer”. Instead of taking the phone back to ATT I’d like to try to fix it myself by doing a hard reset . What is the button combo to do that? Thanks.

May 20, 2009

mobbler gave me a BIG issue, but what you have to do is change it’s access point. It makes sense to think you should use “media net” BUT ..and i dont know why you need to make that access point “Proxyless” !!!!! after this it works like a CHARM.

Matthew Miller
May 21, 2009

I actually use Proxyless for just about every connection. It is not clear which is preferred and the device makes you think MEdiaNet is best. I plan to post on this and what works with each.

Jeff
May 21, 2009

My Exchange Server Hosting company somehow discovered that my account had not been set-up for Active Sync, Mail for Exchange now syncs with the Exchange Server.

I’ve pared my contacts to less than 3500, address book is now working most of the time…

Frank
May 21, 2009

Can someone please explain the hard reset procedure? I see the factory reset under settings, but it simply restores the original settings. Is there a reset that clears personal data/removes 3rd party applications?

Matthew Miller
May 21, 2009

Frank, try entering *#7370# and then the code 12345 and see if that works. This is what I use to clear off devices back to factory default on my other S60 devices, but I haven’t personally tried it on the E71x yet.

If anyone can help with this question, I would greatly appreciate it. I just received my nokia e71x yesterday, and in trying to really utilize the calendar and list memos, to-do’s, anniversaries, etc, i don’t like how all these calendar “events” are listed on my main screen, above my WLAN info. Five events are listed for five different days, and I would prefer just for the current day’s calendar events to be listed. I’ve really tried, but cannot seem to make this change. Anyone?

2 big problems with E71x

Problem One:

Brand new E71x

Vista – 4GB RAM, 250GB HDD, 512MB Video

Nokia PC Suite 7.1.26.0

Connected cable to PC USB 2.0 port

and other end to E71x

Installing Symbian Bible app on E71X doesn’t work, even though I’m using version 3 which is the correct one for my phone. In fact the PC Suite software features work only partially on my phone.

Problem Two: Phone’s 3G connection is squirelly. 9 out of 10 times I cannot connect to Media Net or Media Mall. I get WLAN: Unable to Connect! WLAN Network not found.

Beginning to think my phone is a pretty piece of junk. Any assistance would be gratefully appreciated.

May 23, 2009

@Mike – I’m using the same version of PC Suite, currently on Win7 RC1, but have also used with no issue on XP Home and Vista Home Premium. What features aren’t working? As for the 3G connection, I mostly use the Operator/Proxyless connection when wifi isn’t available. When wifi is available, it works fine for me. What setting have you selected for your connection in MediaNet?

hey everyone- another basic question from me. if anyone can help, that would be great. since the nokia e71x has a 2.5mm jack for headphones (all my other devices have a 3.5mm), does anyone have any suggestions for inexpensive 2.5mm headphones that are compatible and would work with the e71x? i know that there are many adapters to go 3.5 to 2.5 but they are all fairly clunky, and i would rather just have some dedicated 2.5mm headphones for the e71x.

I’m having problems playing video clips with the real player on my Nokia e71x. Whether they are short (2 min) or long (over 30 min) there is a pause and jump every 5-7 seconds. The image and the sound pauses for a moment, and then jerks ahead. It may be an issue with the Video Manager on Nokia PC Suites, but I was curious to see if anyone else is having this problem and if there are any solutions…

Nokia E71x

The over use of the phone was above standard, and has a great feel. Menus are similarly easy to maneuver through. Email box was through the message box so kind of annoying if mostly concerned about email. Email for Exchange only relays your Inbox. Mail will not pull in mail form any subfolders that you have mail redirected to. Camera is the best on a phone so far. Phone mode was great, clear and easy to dial call ignore etc. Would suggest this phone only to light email users. Tethering phone as a modem so your laptop gets internet works above average and had some great connection speeds for a Smartphone, but AT&T application isn’t used and you will need to download the application from Nokia here: http://www.nokiahowto.com/A41423655#

Love the phone but isn’t applicable due only to the email for exchange issue. (Email for exchange only retrieves emails in your inbox, and will not pull from subfolders where you may have rules to forward to designated boxes.)

I sort of answer my own question. What you can do instead is change the messaging setting. Do this by messaging. have your brower on INBOX; click OPTION; click SETTING; click OTHERS; and then custom your wanted “number of saved msgs.”

Hope this works.

I FOUND OUT HOW TO DELETE ALL TEXT MESSAGES IN YOUR INBOX.

Go to your INBOX and open it. Then go OPTIONS–> MARK/UNMARK–> MARK ALL. All your msgs should be marked.

Then go OPTIONS–>DELETE. This should delete all messages (I haven’t tried this myself).

I tried marking 2 text messages and hit OPTIONS–> DELETE. This deleted both of my marked messages.

Hope this helps.

I just bought the e71x. I am having trouble with “allow the network…” prompt in Skype. If I traded this in and bought the e71, would I have the same problem? Is it AT&T arranging with Nokia to allow only certain apps? Not having skype sorta kills my grand vision for my communcations.

Update on the flashing-text-icon-all-the-time-problem: You have messages on your sim card that were carried over to the new phone. Go to messaging>messages>options then pick sim messages. Mark and then delete all old texts.

Unfortunately, this home screen contact name auto filter is turned off on the E71x. That is actually one of the main things I use on the E71 and may be a reason for people to go with the E71 instead. You can set one of the two lower selection keys to Contacts and then in Contacts do a search like this, but it adds a step in the process.

AT&T E71X that is new. I have several AOL email accounts that I follow for business. After setting up over the weekend, I now have three folders from Xpress setups and only one works. Each account started up find and loaded w/ emails, but now only one gets fresh email? All appear to have same settings other than the different email name and address in the settings page. Does Xpress only support one account? How do I delete the non-working accounts and start over? Any recommendations? – thx

Rob, from the responses above, looks like the only solution is a hard reset. I have the same problem you’re having and I tried everything to fix the phone. Luckily, I just got the phone, so I won’t lose too much.

Also, it appears Nokia mail might work better than Xpress Mail.

@Kathy Menu> Tools> Recent calls. Here you can view your calls received, calls missed and calls made.

Anyone ever figure out how to use the letters for dialing a number with letters (i.e. 1-800-FLOWERS)? This is SOOOO DUMB that this isn’t an obvious function or even possible.

@Nokia, You are MORONS

good mornin. My media player will not refresh nor play any songs and my messages wont save to my memory card instead of the phone memory. Im using a 4 gig memory card and nothing is saved to the phone. I operate everything off of the memory card and im only using 2.2 out of 4. So i have almost half the room left. Any help as to why this is happening or what i can do to fix thus would be great… Thx in advance

I need help! I tried to send a multimedia text message 3 days ago. It is sitting in the outbox and is showing as deferred. The problem is, I can’t send the message, delete the message or move it to my drafts. When I select any of those options, nothing happens. The message is just stuck there and is making the outgoing message symbol show up on my home screen at all times. Any ideas? Thanks!

Blinking message light fix for Nokia E71x – Get your old phone and put your SIM card in to it. Find the messages (voice, text etc that are still on your old phone) and delete them. When you load the SIM back to your E71x, the blinking message notification will be gone.

Basically it seems like the problem is that there are messages on the SIM that are not accessible through on the new phone.

I’m reposting a comment to fix the blinking message light. It works perfectly thanks to Mason.

Update on the flashing-text-icon-all-the-time-problem: You have messages on your sim card that were carried over to the new phone. Go to messaging>messages>options then pick sim messages. Mark and then delete all old texts.

Hi there, I am thinking of sending my Nokia E71x back, and for one reason only. On my old Samsung BlackJack I could send myself meeting requests from outlook at work and then accept them on my blackjack and they would immediately appear in my calendar, if there were updates sent my calendar would be automatically updates when I accepted. I know that since the Nokia is not windows based that this may be the root of my problem, but I wanted to make sure that there is no other way for this to work before I return it because I really like all of the other features of the phone, I just really need to be able to recieve calendar invites and then have them populate on my calendar in the phone (without having to sync with computer constantly). Thanks for any assistance you can offer!

I know how to delete all the messages at once. Go to inbox, options, mark/unmark, click mark all, than it should mark all your texts, than go to options delete! :)

Hi! I have got the Nokia e71x as gift in India. How do make optimum use of applications, without AT&T as a GSM/3G operator as AT&T is not present as operator in India. Please suggest.

Regarding Matthew Miller’s question about dialing mnemonic numbers like 1-800-FLOWERS (and Bob Smith’s follow up question): I too was frustrated by the E71X’s inability to dial such numbers. Otherwise I’ve been very satisfied with the phone and use it all the time for web connectivity, text messages, camera, music, audio books, calculator, notes, and even for voice calls!

I solved my 1-800-FLOWERS problem by creating DialMyWord, a Java app that will run on the E71X or any other phone that is compatible with Java applications (which is most phones). The “free” version will give you the converted number, but if you register (for US$0.99) it will convert the number and dial it for you. You can get it at download.com (http://download.cnet.com/DialMyWord/3000-2155_4-10976834.html).
