Nokia 5800 gets a quick firmware update to version 20.0.012

Nokia 5800 in handAs readers here know, my own blue Nokia 5800 arrived last week and I have been loading it up and using it with my T-Mobile SIM. I read over on All About Symbian about a firmware update for the 5800 that was just made available. I tried the OTA (over-the-air) update check, but the phone popped up that no update was available. I then connected my 5800 to my PC and went through the Nokia Software Updater (NSU) and discovered there indeed WAS an update available that took my phone from version 11.0.008 to the new 20.0.012 firmware.

The update is 133 MB and allows you to update your device and preserve all of your applications and services. According to Rafe and Steve at All About Symbian these are the fixes you should find in this new update:

  • Geotagging information now available in Camera.
  • Dictionary application added, with support for multiple languages.
  • App. update application added – this is used to update individual Nokia applications outside of firmware updates. This is what I mentioned was needed in the Download! utility.
  • General operation seems smoother, better performance is various applications, including Gallery, plus screen rotations are faster.
  • Playing back Flash/FLV videos had less hiccups, especially on YouTube.
  • ‘Search’ on the standby screen now searches phone content as well as on the internet.
  • Cosmetic effects added, especially in Gallery when switching orientation.
  • The usual litany of small bug fixes.

I like the geotagging feature and plan to use it on my upcoming family cruise vacation. It is also always good to see an increase in performance.

Sounds good, glad to hear of the updates, now if Nokia would just announce when it will be in the US and hoepfully with an AT&T renewal :)

TheNokiaBlog mentioned a possible US drop date of Feb 26th. Hope it’s true and hope, AT&T picks it up quick.
