Do you think the N900 is better than the iPhone?

I just read this article titled 15 ways the N900 is better than the iPhone and 5 ways it is not and have to say it is quite a well presented argument. Obviously at this time, the available applications for the iPhone beat just about any platform, but as I have said before the extremely strong browser on the N900 makes having many apps a moot point. I have a preproduction N900 and an iPhone 3GS and admit I do keep switching back and forth because there are some key apps for my usage that I find appealing on the iPhone. I also think Apple has the user interface down so the common user feels comfortable with the device. Then again, no one ever said I was common and I really enjoy the geekiness and power of the N900.

Nokia N900

I like the N900 for the following:

  • Powerful web browser
  • Hardware keyboard
  • Awesome camera
  • Prop up kickstand
  • Standard microUSB for charging and connecting to PC
  • Notifications (Apple can’t even touch these or the Android model)
  • VoIP/IM integration with easy calling/chatting via Skype, Google Talk, SIP, etc.
I like my iPhone 3GS for the following:
  • Applications for Twitter, Facebook, Bible reading, and GPS navigation
  • Ease of getting media content on the device through iTunes
Hmm, I guess there isn’t much about the iPhone I like over the N900. They both have mediocre battery life, but at least the N900 has a removable battery and standard microUSB port for charging. If the N900 can get support for Amazon Video On Demand added to it like the Nokia N97, then that will address my video content issue. The N900 also needs some good social networking apps and I am sure we will see more as developers continue to work on Maemo and the device gets out into more people’s hands.

What do you like about the Nokia N900?

I Like the N900 cos:

1- Full WebBrowser 2- Linux roots 3- Open Platform 4- Skype, Gtalk, MSN, FaceBook, Gmail, etc native just out the box. 5- Removable Battery, MicroSD Slot 6- Standard Connectors (USB, Earphones). 7- Cheaper (unclocked w/o contract is 2/3 of the iDumb, sorry iPhone price) 8- HW Keyboard 9- 5pmx Camera, & frontal WebCam 10- No Jailbroken or tricks to take full advantage.

I Like the iDumb, sorry iPhone coz: 1- Is wide Available Now. 2- Good plethora of accessories. 3- Too Many free dumber applications ready to make you spend the time when no other option is available.

Can the Nokia N900 use Pandora and ustream because if so then it would move up from it’s place on my list and is there a touch qwerty because I don’t like the keyboard to much from the looks of it.

Sadly as much as I like the idea of the N900 it will never be more than a geek’s device, and is unlikely to achieve the market penetration of the iPhone or even the N97. I am sure the people who own it will love it once Nokia iron out the bugs and hopefully add missing features like support for MMS and voice guided navigation in ovi maps. But with maemo 5 due to be replaced by maemo 6 (sadly the n900 won’t be able to upgrade to maemo 6) by money is on it successor in 2010

Ratkat, do you mind sourcing your claims? As someone who’s fairly familiar with the platform, its community and most of the official announcements coming out of Nokia, you’re claim that Maemo 6 wont run on the N900 in entirely unfounded.

With such a powerful browser so many of the apps that were once needed are not needed anymore. But due to the easyness of porting to maemo i think apps will show up faster than you think. I just hope that the n900 will be able to run maemo 6.

Do not compare apples and oranges.

I think that N900 is maby 1/3 in the area of Iphone and the rest of its functionality and market segment is for totally different group than Iphone.

For example compare thickness. Event this puts these contenders to a different series. Iphone merged from ipod/itouch multimedia powerhouse and N900 merged from small geeks group Internet tablet powerhouse.

In some area you can compare, but it’s as stupid as comparing 11,6″ netbook to 17″ laptop.

I love all of what u listed under the n900,yet there is one more feature which makes it rise above not just the iphone but also most other smartpones around…its the AVI/XviD/divx support which really makes watching movies on the go spectacular, especially if mixed with the kickstand for a full enjoyable experience!!!!!!!!!

If the n900 was packed in iphone casing/design, eveyone had loved it. everything starts with physical looks! n900 is not even close to iphone in this department!

i always say when nokia makes one thing good they make other thing really bad

in this case n900 maemo is really very good and the physical aspects are really too bad.. why cant nokia understand this.

core logic behind apples success is they re-invent hardware and refine software.. with limited devices well aligned to consumer markets they push things really hard!

with pinch of their own technology and making it closed one they make all consumer running after their products

just wait if apple rolls out new low priced iphones they put nokia in a great fix until they change their bureaucratic attitude towards their own devices

but who cares in nokia they feel they are the best!

It is better simply because it is not an iphone. I had an ipod touch for a couple of months and I was ashamed to bring it out in public and be one of the masses the majority of whom just buy anything ipod to make themselves feel cool. Had no choice but to sell it.

Aside from not being a Tom, **** or Harry the N900 is better because you are free to customise it however you like rather than Apple telling you how to use a device you already paid for.

I am a mac user and I just ordered an n900 for many of the reasons listed above. My question is: how easy will it be to share files between my mac and the n900. Can I mount the SD just like any other USB mass storage device? Thanks, Tim

Tim, I use the N900 with my MacBook Pro. The 32GB and microSD cards show up when you tap and select Drive Mode. The N900 internal drive actually shows up on my MBP with a N900 icon being shown. I have taken videos formatted for the iPhone and dragged them to the N900 to play just fine.

Tim and Matthew Miller,

I am not a Mac user, but I’ve seen several things showing that the N900 is more compatible than previous N-Series devices, from what I’ve read.

Tim, you might also be interested in Matthew Miller’s previous post about how to connect the N900 as a modem to your Mac as well. http://nokiaexperts.com/nokia-n900-tips-n900-modem-apple-mac/

The iPhone has many apps as simple frontends for websites. As the screen and the browser of the N900 are so much better, these aren’t needed most of the time. Or will creep up over time, just like maeMaps, my Google Maps interface for Maemo. Also, many apps on the iPhone are small/short games, which the N900 also has +/- because of its flash support. Finally, the iPhone has one app for each type of phone call (GSM/UMTS, Skype, VOIP?) and chat (SMS, ICQ, MSN etc. etc.). On the N900, they are all integrated and the user doesn’t have to care about it.

What I like the iPhone for: UI standards across applications. A handful of optimized games.

What I like the N900 for: a computer in my pocket. Integrated cross-protocoll communications (one app for Chat and Voice, independent of protocol used). Camera quality. Sharing. Browser. FM receiver. Open framework. Quake III. Emulators. Torrents and Divx. Everything important integrated (e.g. Mediaplayer with Internet Radio, DNLA support and FM transmitter). And price: here in Switzerland, the iPhone 32GB costs about 40% more than the N900!

The N900 is not only a much better deal, but a real paradigm change in mobile devices.

If you mean “better” by having a superior operating system installed then theres no way the iphone isnt in the lead. Whatever is nokia, they always add features we all love.

I think Nokia is taking Maemo to the next step. They realize that they have a winner, and none of us have a production model in our hands yet. Watching videos of the device (thank you Matthew Miller), reading reviews (on The Nokia Blog), and looking at the specs, clearly Nokia has realized it had to do something with their phone lineup. A lot of people question on whether there will be as many apps as in the Apple App Store. Regardless of that, there is a lot integrated in Maemo. Maybe we will not have 100,000 applications like the iPhone. But Maemo will certainly have more powerful ones. Ones that show that it is a true pocket computer.

I am disappointed to see that well known blogs are reporting that the screen is still relatively unresponsive to touch? My impression was that it was really very responsive. (I am talking about Gigaom and engadget)

the iphone is better (though I am rooting for nokia)

The screen really is not as good as capacitive. You have to use it to understand. When I used the demo at the nokia store, I thought it was also slow to web browse (even on wifi).

N900 is better than Iphone, Iphone is better than N900.

how is it possible?

depends on what the user thinks.

you can try to compare the two, but you will fail miserably. have a good day.

I have a Iphone 3Gs and N900.

iphone is far better than n900 in my opinion. i had an iphone for more than a year before i broke it (my fault not the phones) so decided to try the n900. i must admit, the n900 is a good phone with its briliant camera and the internet explorer with flash which is brilliant for youtube and other video sites. but, i have to say that the iphone is hands down the best phone i have ever used. sure the n900 is powerful, but the iphone is equally as powerful and might not support multi-tasking but is still very quick and the apps are amazing on it. you may think im one of those people who like style and fashion over hardware but im not, i love hardware much more than all that style stuff lol. the iphone is also the most easily used phone ever and beats the n900 for ease of use easily and.. well its just amazing lol, what else can i say…

i own the n900 i was one of the first to recieve it in the uk on launch day before xmas .

in the few weeks i have owned it there hasent been a day go by were i havent played with it and always find something new on it . apps are been made daily for it now as well as been able to customize the firmware of the device . ovi is in development for guidance as well as sygic .

one of the good point is as an app gets upgraded your n900 lets you know that an update is available and lets you upgrade OTA just like it does with the firmware .

maybe it will never win in sales with the i phone ,dont forget the iphone has got a 3 year head start .

but for elite , a n900 says it all .

everyone has an i phone a bit like most reps drive a mondeo

the n900 is a more refined piece of kit ,but you need to own one to understand this
