MWC 09: Hands-on with the Nokia E75 and N97

nokia-booth-attack-8I was able to attend Mobile World Congress last year, but this year I am actually on a family cruise vacation. Dieter is at his first MWC this year and offered to help me out here by swinging by the Nokia booth to see what was going on in the world of Nokia and S60. He had a chance to check out some of the new hardware that was announced, the Nokia E75, and the device I am saving up for this Summer, the Nokia N97.

Check out some of these photos Dieter took of the E75 and N97.

Dieter also mentioned that the E75 front application buttons are very small, but the hardware was rock solid. I would like to check one out myself, but still think my E71 will remain my favorite until the N97 is announced. I am actually intrigued by the E55 and imagine this one may run less than US$300 so may end up in my gear bag.

We have seen lots of videos and hands-on impressions of the Nokia N97, but Dieter did have some thoughts to offer about the device. He mentioned he is particularly fond of the hinge design so I included a few images here for you to check out.

He also found the new widget homescreen to be very impressive and snappy. Rearranging them was fun and easy and you can have two full screens of widgets. Even Symbian applications can have a widget on the homescreen that points to it so you will be able to customize your homescreen more than you ever have before on S60 devices.

the n97 is beautiful, Ive already set aside a portion of my tax refund to get this. I only wish it would have had a capacitive touchscreen as opposed to a resistive one

I like the look of the new e75 but i just prefer the front facing keyboard on my e71 makes doing anything a breeze. It will be hard adjusting to the n97 when I get it.

I wonder if anyone has done a comparison between the N97 and the E90. I’m looking to change my almost 2-year old and this looks close enough but I’m worried about the lack of keyboard shortcuts and only one screen. Any thoughts?
