Mobile World Congress 09: Nokia announces new Eseries and Ovi Store

I really like my Nokia E71 (see my review) and it is my current favorite S60 device. I didn’t think I would consider another device to replace it, but honestly the Nokia E75 and E55 that were just announced by Nokia today at Mobile World Congress are looking mighty fine. I have said for a couple years that I wanted to see a Nseries device with a SureType keyboard and now we get that in the E55. The SureType keyboard provides two characters per key so the keyboard is much more compact than a full QWERTY keyboard and software is used to predict what you are entering. I also like the new E75 that was announced because it does give you a standard phone keypad to use if you want, but also a full QWERTY for serious text entry. It is going to be tough to keep my money in my wallet with these two, but I just have to keep my eye on the grand prize of the N97.

Even more exciting news to me is the announcement about the upcoming S60 application store, called Ovi Store by Nokia. With over 3.5 million developers and the world’s largest smartphone market share we are going to see some fantastic applications available starting in May on our devices. Even better, Nokia is making the store relevant to your social connections and physical location so there is some customization included in the store.

Wow to think I just droped cash on my e71 now it’s obsolete. Do you think nokia will be updating the e71 with full HTML support? I love my e71 but I miss the email off my iPhone.. I’m waiting for the big bad n97 to come out I’m already saving for it !!!

Most importantly, will the E71 have the same set of software features that the E55 offers, or will it not happen just because the former is on FP1 and the latter on FP2?

E71 is the best mobile ever. The qwerty in ‘Portrait’ mode is the best way for me. I miss a good camera and HTML (C´mon Nokia?!) support on this device. Nokia, I hope N97 does not let me down! I´m waiting so hard! :-)

I can’t wait! I only hope that Nokia enforces a bit of quality control and we don’t see some of the garbage that we see in the Apple App Store. One thing Nokia can learn from Apple, is the relatively cheap pricing for applications.
