Thanks to ZuneScene for the image.

Last year I wrote about the rumors that the Zune team was working with Microsoft on maybe bringing Zune Marketplace content to Nokia devices. We never heard anything about this since then and it may be a dead issue. This week there was a bit of news about how good of a deal the Zune Pass was compared to the iTunes. I have a simple 4GB Zune and the Zune Pass and really do enjoy the quality of the music and choice I have in audio content. I find with a subscription service that I listen to a very wide variety of music and find lots of stuff I enjoy. Plus, you now get to keep 10 songs a month forever (just make sure to buy the non-DRM MP3 files to use anywhere).

A couple years ago, I discovered I could transfer and play Zune subscription content on my HTC Windows Mobile devices. This was great because I did not always have my Zune with me, but my phone was always with me. As I was playing around with the Nokia E71x last night, I decided on a whim to see if I could transfer Zune subscription content to the microSD card on the E71x.

I am VERY PLEASED to tell you that Zune Pass subscription content (yes, DRM content) plays perfectly on the Nokia E71x. This includes both MP3 and WMA files too.

Now, I am not sure if this content will last past 30 days without looking for the license and if it does then you should be able to simply retransfer your content to your microSD card once a month.

This seems like a great deal for US Nokia owners since we can’t yet use the Nokia Comes With Music services. The Zune Pass is $15/month for unlimited music with the option to select up to 10 songs with the free monthly credit you get from Microsoft. As long as your Zune Pass subscription remains current your unlimited music license will remain valid.

Mathew – First, allow me to exclaim what a pleasure it is to have discovered your site. ‘Nokia Expert’ is a major component in my decision to buy the E71x. I am not terribly sophisticated in anything technical and have resisted purchasing something beyond a basic phone.

I write because I’m not having any success in running the Mini Opera browser. It downloaded fine – but each time I try to open the installation – after saying ‘yes’ to the ‘Allow application’ prompt – I get a ‘Failed to connect to the Internet’ notice.

Opera Mini v. 4.2 onto device 3G – all bars. Tried three times and removed Opera Mini before the third attempt. Thanks.

DRM: FAIL. Not interested in renting music.

Stephen –

That’s interesting that you can’t get the Opera mini to open, I still can’t get Skyfire to work! With Opera, I had a couple issues actually getting the download (it does NOT recognize the e71x) but the ‘generic’ version seemed to open just fine for me. The app itself really doesn’t have much to offer (and I STILL can’t get to Hulu.com!) Personally, I’m a little upset that the e71x doesn’t come with an FM radio (like the e71) and I have no interest in buying OR renting music! (Short attention span!)
