Hurray! Threaded SMS is supported on the Nokia N8

I was able to join in on the Nokia N8 Q&A session (check them out on the Nseries blog) and one of the questions I asked that is an issue for me personally (I do have a couple teenage daughters) is the support out of the box for threaded SMS/conversational view of text messages. Nokia confirmed that the N8 has support for this out of the box! That did it for me and confirmed the purchase decision of the N8 that I already knew was highly likely.

Other cool facts

Another major bonus is support for 5 bands of WCDMA so you can use the N8 with either AT&T or T-Mobile 3G data networks so there will no longer be limits on who in the US can buy and fully use a Nokia device. This is the FIRST smartphone that we have ever seen support all five bands in a single device, across EVERY mobile operating system and is a MAJOR deal.
USB on the Go: In the box you will get an adapter so you can plug in USB sticks & hard drives. There is obviously a limit what kind of current N8 supply so it means that with some hard drives you need an external power supply. You can transfer easily big files without PC
Nokia is building on the Communities application in Nokia Messaging for Social Networks to roll out improved Facebook and Twitter clients. Functions will include status updates, share location and photos, view live feeds from Facebook directly on the home screen, transferring events from social networks into the device calendar is also easy, the Facebook profiles can be linked to the device phone book (cool).
New email application. As stated in the chat, “the e-mail is completely redone. Super easy to set up multiple accounts without knowing any server details. Works with Exchange. Displays HTML mails with nice fonts and pictures in place. Fast switching between mailboxes. Tap-and-hold for contextual options… it’s totally redone.”
Camera is HOT and there are several technologies and features that make it even better than most point and shoot cameras.

All 5 US bands? Now THAT is interesting! Does that mean Nokia will offer this phone unlocked (i.e. available for purchase on their Web site?)

How much do you think an unsubsidized N8 is likely to cost?

@Charles in Canada I would bet my life that it would be unlocked. Every power user (at least here in the U.S.) buys Nokia unlocked phones. Power users have been requesting multi-3G bands for a LONG LONG TIME because of our 3G frequency dilemma. Initial reports are it will cost 370 Euros which is about 500 U.S. dollars. What I did not know was the USB and hard drive support. That is just crazy. My next phone was probably not going to be a Nokia because I was disappointed in Nokia not stepping up to the plate and offering a true flagship device. I think they convinced me otherwise. The price is also very competitive! Nokia, my hat goes off to you. Keep this up and keep the portfolio growing.

Hi Matthew,

Is it confirmed that there will be 5 3G bands in one Nokia device? is that official? I had this same problem with previous announcements and when they were released, it proved otherwise. What about the fact that 850Mhz and 900Mhz cannot work on the same device?

N8 got a “capacitive touch screen” apart from so many spec. which iphone does not have, till now all the so called iphone killers didn’t had so its going to be ultimate killer.

and n8 cam also having “face & smile detection”.

Did anyone say anything at the session about multiple calendars during the session? I’d really love to be able to view a Google calendar and an Exchange calendar inside my calendar app like our Android, Pre, and iPhone-toting friends.

The N8 is my dream phone, the only thing missing is dual camers so you can do video calls. Also, perhaps even a bigger battery, I’m willing to bet this battery is gonna drain pretty quick.

Pending the price, I would hold off buying one. I got some expensive dental work to be done and a baby coming. I’ll stick with the Nexus One and the regrettable e71x.
