Enable Facebook chat on your Nokia N900

Enable Facebook chat on your Nokia N900Sorry about the posts here being light this week, but I have been extremely busy with my normal day job and haven’t been able to spend much time with this hobby site. I spent some time cleaning up my Facebook contacts the other day to try to keep it limited to high school, college, local friends, and those who I consider my closer friends while keeping Twitter more open to online aquaintances. I then started looking around at ways to chat with these Facebook friends from a mobile device and Mark Guim made a timely post on how to enable this capability on the Nokia N900. While the N900 may not have a lot of slick looking apps like Android and the iPhone, integrated service functionality like this is quite compelling.

Follow the directions Mark posted to get Facebook chat enabled through the Jabber client on your N900. I keep bouncing between the N900 and Nexus One and on the Nexus One I actually have Nimbuzz loaded up for Facebook chat support.

Another option is to have FB chat integrated in conversations just like Skype and Google Talk w/o having to go through Jabber. I do not remember if I found the program in ex test or ex devel…but ‘extra protocol plugins for conversations and contacts’ has worked perfectly for me.

Few bugs with the extra protocol route though – re-downloading all your chat history everytime you open a conversation, creating multiple versions of the same contact are two of them off the top of my head

The jabber solution is great however I really want my Facebook clients to be grouped by Facebook, not jabber.

I’m using the Facebook chat plugin at the moment but there are annoying bugs as described by the commenter above. I’m hoping they get that sorted soon.

my n900 came with facebook chat account in the VOIP and IM accounts menu in the settings part, then all you have to do is connect it to your facebook account by using your username.chat@facebook.com and done, PLUS! all your friends who have facebook and had their phone numbers on their facebook will automatically upload to your contacts list on your phone, this is way better then using any applications because it come straitly from your n900 phone
