As for not living near Chicago, that is a good thing.
The sales tax in Cook County (where Chicago is
located) is 10.25%, the highest in the country.

Well, Nokia also adds a sales tax on online orders (http://store.nokia.com) -- even for shipments to other states (CA).

Called Nokia's customer service and sales department (1-866-596-6542) for an explanation. Their reply amounted to "go away".

Hello,
Why is it that these Nokia products are produced In the USA for availability but very expensive? I am a lover of Nokia products especially N97 because of the membrane capacities and other stuffs.I've been searching around lots of stores with no signal of seen these durable products but in Chicago. Is there any other location where this product Nokia N97 be 100% off?
I am waiting to get respond so as to purchase my mobile.

Thanks
Desiree

Mike, I'd bet that the e71 price will drop when the e72 hits the shelves. The e71 is a very solid device and very reliable.

Brad, you are right. The price is a premium to get it into my hands earlier than everyone else, but to drop the price in the same month is a bit much, I think.

As allaboutsymbian.com reported the camera lens cover scratches the lens and GPS lock is shoddy. This is not the Nokia I know, especially for a "Flagship" device. The only way to fix these problems is to send it in to Nokia. It seems they rushed it to get it to market without their quality testing, which is one major reason why people buy their products.

I'll reinforce what s4r said about Chicago sales tax - it is unreal! Even though I can walk to the Flagship Store here in the Windy City, if I was to buy one of these, I would rather fly to NY on Southwest.

I wonder why the E71 isn't on sale - and I wonder if it will drop in price when the E72 comes out?

s4r, that's normal for any company. Early adapters always pay a premium. Just look at the price drops for the iPhone, Palm Pre, new gaming systems, etc. If the original price for the N97 or iPhone 8gb was so unfair, there wouldn't have been people wrapped around store's front doors to get them. Even the original Motorola Rzr was $300 or so.

Nope. Got hosed in the past from Nokia, it will not happen again. Once I wear out my N97, I might be jumping ship.

As for not living near Chicago, that is a good thing. The sales tax in Cook County (where Chicago is located) is 10.25%, the highest in the country.

I am sure a lot of people are kicking themselves after purchasing these devices not too long ago. The way Nokia acts with the prices is ridiculous in my opinion. People bought the N97 for $699. Less than a month later, it was $100 off. Now, the N97 can be picked up online for $529. That is a $170 difference. That is quite a bit of money. Either Nokia desperately needed the money from preorders to actually keep the factories alive, or their devices are really not worth the prices they're stamped with. Eventually, the consumer will have their say.

Seems the n86 is already out of stock online. I was thinking on getting that. Not a bad price at $400.
