Canalys 3rd quarter 09 data shows Nokia steady over last year

Canalys posted their 3rd quarter 2009 figures and as you can see Nokia actually saw slight growth over Q3 2008 and maintains a huge lead over all other smartphone platforms. RIM and Apple are definitely still on the rise though and I have to say I was a bit surprised by the huge growth in RIM (40.8%) over the last year. RIM’s BlackBerry platform is quite dated and is primarily based on forward facing QWERTY devices. It seems all the excitement is around touchscreen devices, but the numbers don’t necessarily show that is what people are always buying.

I was a bit surprised that Nokia was able to stay so steady since they haven’t had a lot of smartphone releases lately and I thought the N97 wasn’t doing as well as it seems to be. The report actually states that component shortages may have dampened Nokia’s sales too.
