New to the AT&T Nokia E71x? Here are some tips to make it better

New to the AT&T Nokia E71x? Here some tips to make it betterAs a S60 power user I was justifiably quite disappointed by the AT&T Nokia E71x as I clearly laid out in my blog post yesterday. However, I also know that the E71/E71x is an awesome piece of hardware with a very functional QWERTY keyboard, rock solid construction, and now a decent camera. I also believe that this device will be very compelling in the AT&T store next to the much clunkier smartphones and with the $100 price point it may do quite well. That said, I decided to dive into the device some more and see if I could customize it to my liking where I could accept it as a smartphone in my collection. With the possibility that many people may also pick this up I also decided that I would start making New E71x user posts to help those people out if they happen to find this site.

Customizing the menu layout

Since many apps and folders cannot be removed, I decided to do a little housekeeping and arranging to make the E71x more efficient.

I first created a “Junk” folder by selecting the left soft key (Options) and then New folder. I was able to move three default folders from AT&T (My Stuff, MEdiaMall, and CellularVideo) around and put the MEdiaMall one in here, along with things like Help, About, and Settings wizard that I never use or use only once.

I then created a few more folders I like to use and called them Office, Comms, and Media. I usually create a GPS folder, but the AT&T GPS one is not changeable so I just used this one. Here is what I placed in each of these folders:

  • Office – Address Book, Quickoffice, Adobe PDF, Notes, and Calendar
  • Comms – Recent calls, fring, Wordmobi, and Gravity
  • Media – My Stuff (AT&T’s folder that is movable), Recorder, Camera, RealPlayer, ShoZu, and Cellular Video
  • AT&T GPS – AT&T Nav, Where, Shop GPS, Google Maps, Sports Tracker, Landmarks
I then did some rearranging of my main menu screen with the following arrangement:
  • Top row – AT&T GPS, Yellowpages (an AT&T app that looks helpful), Messaging, Office
  • 2nd row – MEdia Net (S60 web browser), Opera Mini, Gmail, Comms folder
  • 3rd row – Media, Tools, Settings, AT&T Music
  • 4th row – Junk, Games&Apps
Since you only see three rows on the E71x, I can keep things I never access down “below the fold” and it helps me out. With this arrangement I am getting more and more pleased with the E71x.

Installing helpful applications

The E71x has over 100MB available to install 3rd party applications so you can pretty much install to your heart’s content. I also put in an 8GB microSD card for even more capacity. Here are the applications I personally installed and enjoy on the E71x:

Nokia Email: If you want to use email on your Nokia E71x then I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you read this post I just put up and get Nokia Email on your device ASAP.

Google Maps: I am posting a full review of the AT&T Navigator application here tomorrow, but for those quick fixes when you don’t need navigation and voice directions Google Maps is always a great application to have on your devices. To download simply go to www.google.com/gmm in the MEdia Net/S60 web browser.

Mail for Exchange: MFE is used to connect to your Exchange server and sync your email, calendar, contacts, and to-dos. It is downloaded when you select it in email setup and is essential for me. I may also try out and switch to RoadSync 4 since it is a superior product with HTML email support.

RoadSync 4: Even better than the free MFE is RoadSync version 4.0. I will have a full review up shortly, but if you are an Exchange user who wants HTML email and a much more functional client then go try this one out.

Wordmobi: Wordmobi is a S60 WordPress client that lets me blog from the E71x to this blog on the go.

Bible: I like to always have the Bible with me on my devices for reading, studying, and sharing. I have both the Symbian Bible and OliveTree Bible Reader loaded on my E71x and both work flawlessly.

Opera Mini: I know the default browser is quite good, but I find the shortcuts, ability to sync my bookmarks across all my devices, and sheer speed of Opera Mini to be useful enough to have it loaded on my S60 devices. Simply point your browser to opermini.com to download and install the application.

Gmail: I am not happy about the lack of support for Nokia Messaging on the E71x, but have faith the Nokia Messaging team will get this worked out :) In the meantime, I like using the Java-based Gmail client for multiple accounts. You simply visit gmail.com in your phone browser to install this cool utility.

fring: I wasn’t sure if VoIP applications would be restricted or not on the E71x and I am happy to report that so far at least one works quite well. fring is a slick all-in-one VoIP application that lets you make connect via voice and chat using various clients like fring, Skype, Google Talk, Windows Live Messenger, and more. You can also set it up to work with Facebook and Twitter. Last.fm support is also part of the S60 client and it really is a cool utility you should try. To install, simply visit the fring website from your PC and fill out the phone number boxes to have a text message link sent to your E71x for simply installation. So after leaving the device and coming back into fring I was stuck in a loop where it would start and thenn get hung up on logging me in. I couldn’t get out of the loop without shutting the E71x down and then fring went back into it again. I uninstalled it and then reinstalled and it worked fine again for that particular login. I REALLY want this to work, but am not going to install and uninstall everytime I want to use an application. I know the fring team is good about updates so maybe I can help them test things out and get it up and running soon. UPDATE: fring was quick to respond and has an update version that works on the Nokia E71x that you can download from here.

Gravity and Twittix: I gave you all a comparison of these two Twitter clients and since that review both have been updated a couple of times and are even better today. I like them both, but do tend to gravitate towards using Gravity more. These both costs money, but there are free trials and I recommend you try them both to see which works best for you. There is something going on with text entry in Twittix that is not letting me enter my password on the E71x so I cannot test it out right now. Particularly I cannot enter any numbers in my password without it erasing all text and jumping back up into the username field.

Nokia Sports Tracker: This is a fun application found over at Nokia Beta Labs that lets you use the GPS in your E71x to track your runs, bike rides, walks, and more.

ShoZu: ShoZu is an application used to help you share photos and video, while also subscribing to media channels to enjoy content yourself. I have used it in the past to share photos on Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr. It has evolved and now there are a ton of different supported sites for sharing media, including Ovi. Since Ovi Share doesn’t seem to work on the E71x, this is one way to access this service. Simply visit m.shozu.com in your phone browser to download and install this application. One issue I seem to be having is that Twitter and Facebook feeds never seem to download.

A couple of apps I tried do not run at all so you can skip trying them for now. These include Nokia Podcasting, Conversations (threaded SMS client), and Share Online. If Nokia Podcasting can get working on the E71x I will be SO much more happier keeping the device.

What else do I want?

While using these 3rd party applications and performing a bit of housekeeping on the E71x helps there are a few things I mentioned in my previous post that I still have to get over. These include the lack of contact smart filtering on the home/standby screen, lack of support for Nokia Email/Messaging, customized month view, and home screen apps support. A couple of these items can be addressed with software updates (Nokia Podcasting and Nokia Email) so I am hopeful here. And as I showed above, the AT&T bloatware can be hidden from view for the most part.

The E71x is worth $100

As much as I ranted yesterday, keep in mind I am a user who likes to push the limits of my devices and doesn’t like to be locked down. For $100 thought, I still do think the E71x is a great buy and 99% of the people who buy it will probably be pleased with their new device. I am leaning further and further towards keeping the device, if for now other reason than to help out readers with their questions.

Speaking of that, if you have any specific questions or want to see tutorials or something on the E71x (I do have a few planned already), please post them here.

Have you considered reflashing the firmware to the non-AT&T one? I’m not sure where you would stand legally (the US is a ‘complicated’ place for such issues), but there you go…

May 6, 2009

do you know of a way to turn off 3G? Or how about an article that focuses on having the battery last as long as possible without telling us to shut apps off

catkeepr
May 6, 2009

Is it at all possible that some of the issues you are seeing are not due to AT&T lock downs but because this version of the E71 is running FP2 and the issue could be more compatibility related? Just a thought…

May 6, 2009

I guess this pertains to going online with 3rd party apps. On my Nokia 6126 I could install Gmail, but every time I opened it I had to give it access to browse the web, does that happen with the e71x?

Matthew Miller
May 6, 2009

catkeepr, You raise a valid point about FP2 and that actually may be what is causing issues with a few 3rd party apps. There is still several other issues (contact smart filter, nonremovable apps, etc.) that may not be related to this though.

Max, I suppose I could try to reflash it, but I want to be helpful to those readers who have the E71x and be able to provide them with tips, tricks, and advice. I already have an unlocked E71 so don’t feel the need to flash. I also debate in my mind whether or not this is morally OK to do or not.

jukon, I’ll look into the 3G issue on the device a bit more and see if I can find anything. So far nothing has jumped out to control this though.

catkeepr
May 6, 2009

The nonremoveable apps, I would agree is an AT&T thing, but it is still possible that FP2 affects the smart filter capability as well. It’s not unusual for a vendor to issue an update that breaks certain features that were available previously. Would need an unlocked device with FP2 to test and be certain.

May 6, 2009

Can you ”hack” it even though it has fp2 and new firmware? because there are a few apps that are a must have for me like free isms but are only available unsigned. if not i will be happy with my e71-2 even though i love the black color scheme and improved camera. I was so excited about getting one. Its really a shame at&t crippled such a beautiful phone.

Sorry, this is a little off subject but…

Have you tried to install Nokia Maps to your E71x yet? I have not heard definitively yet whether it can be installed and used with the onboard GPS. I have never used an S60 series phone before, and I was considering the switch to the E71x. However my business doesn’t allow data plans, so the GPS would be useless to me unless I could pre-install the necessary maps.

I saw a report on BGR that Nokia is preparing a E71i with FP2 and a 5 megapixel camera. I may hold off to see if this will pan out…

The E75 has FP2 and allows many of the E-series features, so I don’t think that FP2 is the cause of this stuff.. That gives hope that it’s fixable, but personally, I don’t see it happening.

Word from Nokia (in the podcast that Matt wasn’t able to attend) that another AT&T S60 device is coming and stripping the E-series stuff out allows the E71x and whatever is coming next to share software with minimal development. All of those annoying unmoving icons took effort to code! :) Nokia/AT&T can spread the costs if they keep the same feature set across the line. That’s just a theory, don’t mean to spread rumors.

Matt, I’m relieved (but not surprised) to see that you’re keeping a level head about the E71x. I’m not sure what some bloggers were expecting from a branded device. We are just spoiled with the untouched iphone and our unlocked devices, but I still challenge anyone to find a better qwerty device at your local AT&T store. 90% of what I enjoy doing on my E71 can be done on the E71x.

There is no point preaching to a market segment that prefers subsidized phones about how great unlocked phones are and end up trashing the E71x in the process. We have a great opportunity to welcome new users. As they grow into ‘power users’, I suspect that many will end up going the unlocked route down the road. The E71x will be the device that gets their appetite going for more freedom.

The AT&T branded PalmOS devices were no where nearly as screwed up. The hard keys can be remapped, app icons can be moved or (with third party software) disappear. The only AT&T branding left on my Centro is the logo printed on the case and splash screen when starting up the phone.

I am considering the e71x when my contract comes up for renewal largely because I need to find a new Smartphone OS and this gives me a way to dip my toe into the S60 water. The crucial issue is email though. I currently have Gmail pushed to my phone via IMAP idle. How well can Xpress mail do this?

According to a post on the Expansys website for the E71 you can turn off the 3g mode in the Tools, Settings phone, dual mode menu.

Someone should try and confirm if it works.

I’d try it but I have an E61.

Matthew Miller
May 6, 2009

Alan, by “someone” do you mean me ;) Just feel free to ask and I will test what you need if I can.

FYI, there are no settings to manage the 3G/EDGE connection on the E71. I checked in every setting I could find and haven’t found a thing.

I am not holding my breath though.

Hi, Does the e71x have full screen caller ID or does it display the tiny thumbnail like the standard e71?

Also how is the build quality compared to the e71? Does it have the light leak between the screen and keyboard?

2 Questions: 1. How do I switch the main Idle Screen to show recent emails in the middle instead of upcoming calendar entries?

  1. How do I remove or extend the Light Time Out setting? Ican only do 5-60 seconds.

Thanks!

Matthew Miller
May 7, 2009

godzilla,

  1. Unfortunately, I haven’t found a way to customize the Standby/Idle screen in any noticeable way in the settings, unlike the unlocked E71. I did switch mine to the Vertical Icon Bar in the Settings>Config>General>Idle Screen mode>Idle screen theme menu because this gives me a bit more functionality on the Idle screen. I still don’t get emails there, but have my left soft key setup for Nokia Email so that isn’t too bad.
  2. As far as I can tell, the time out light is limited to a max of 60 seconds.

When the E71 first came out there was a lot of discussion about poor RF performance. How is the RF performance on the E71x? Call quality? Speaker phone volume?

Didn’t see these things mentioned in the initial review above. Did I miss it?

Matthew Miller
May 7, 2009

So far I am seeing almost full bars (I know that is not the best measure) all the time with the E71x. This includes traveling between Seattle and Puyallup and when compared to my E71 (which was quite good actually) the E71x seems to be even better. I will post more on this and the call quality, speakerphone, etc. after a couple more days of usage. I only had the device for a day or two when I made my initial impressions article and needed more time to test these other aspects out.

Can I sync this device with Microsoft Outlook’s calendar, contacts and notes?

Matthew Miller
May 7, 2009

Stuart,

You asked, “Can I sync this device with Microsoft Outlook’s calendar, contacts and notes?”. ABSOLUTELY! I think I will put together a post for tomorrow guiding people on what to do when they pull the E71x out of the box. If you have Outlook loaded up on a PC you need to download and install the Nokia PC Suite software and that will allow you to sync with Outlook (calendar, contacts, and tasks). I have to check on notes since I know those don’t sync via the Exchange server. I personally due this through an Exchange server wirelessly and never sync via a USB cable connection, but the USB to PC solution is the default for most users.

Jason
May 7, 2009

Here’s one for you –

Is the E71x compatible with any Ubuntu Linux apps? I would love to be able to sync mail and contacts in Thunderbird or Evolution.

I have an old Windows machine but my main desktop is Ubuntu.

Also, I would love to see a write up on using Skype and/or Video Share via wifi, etc. (if that’s even possible) I will be traveling through Europe this summer and would love to not have to cart around a laptop as well as the E71x for contacting everyone back home.

Alanhp
May 7, 2009

Regarding shutting off 3G, I did some research. Some of the European carriers that sell “locked” E71′s have disabled the ability to shut off 3G the way I think it is possible with an unlocked unit.

I expect that ATT has done the same thing.

Alan
May 7, 2009

Jason You can sink both contacts and mail.

With contacts, it is little circuitous. Set up an account with Plaxo. Sync your contacts with Plaxo. (It is already set up to do so.)

Then use the Mail for Exchange program on the phone and http://www.nuevasync.com as the server. It is not very difficult to set up. If I remember correctly, the nuevasync site has good instructions. And best of all, it works great.

As for mail, you aren’t syncing with the app on your machine, you sync with the mail server at your ISP. As long as you have a client on your phone, this is easy.

If you use gmail or yahoo, there are java apps as well. (It may be worth setting up an account if you don’t have one to use on the trip.)

If you plan on using your e71x in Europe, check with ATT about how to do it/what it costs for data. They can unlock it for you if you have had the phone long enough (about 90 days I think). Or, call a Nokia flagship store in Chicago or New York and ask if you can put a European SIM in a north american E71x and will it work. I think it does.

Alternatively, don’t keep the ATT sim in the phone in Europe and depend on WiFi for connectivity.

Hope this helps.

Snorkel
May 8, 2009

Matthew, Does the e71 have full screen caller ID when a image is assigned to a contact?

Jason
May 8, 2009

Alan, Thanks that is very helpful.

For the trip I will be in wifi locations often so I won’t really need the SIM installed at all.

LQ
May 8, 2009

Matthew,

Have you confirmed that Google maps works on a locked E71X or are you just stating that it’s good to have?

Also, any idea if AT&T disables wifi for customers who don’t activate a data plan? I have a work phone for email and web browsing, so I plan to use this phone mostly for voice. But it would be nice to surf the web from this phone when I’m in a wifi-enabled area.

Matthew Miller
May 8, 2009

I have used Google Maps a few times on my locked E71x and it works like a champ with GPS fixes in seconds.

I will have to let others answer the account question since I am a contract customer.

LQ
May 8, 2009

Thanks for the quick reply.

On my second question (re: wifi being disabled for customers without a data plan), can you boot up the phone with no SIM card at all? I’ve heard that an E71 with no SIM card can still use wifi. If the E71x works the same way, then presumably it doesn’t need to verify from the SIM that there is a data plan.

Matthew Miller
May 8, 2009

WiFi without a SIM works just like it does on the E71. I am actually using it via WiFi at home right now.

Jason
May 8, 2009

I fumbled with an E71x in the store last night (still waiting for mine to come in)

Google maps works amazingly well.

I even like the camera. I read a bad review of it that said the auto-focus was horrible, I don’t think they read the manual where it says to use the “2″ key to get a focus lock. Worked great when I tried it.

Nova
May 8, 2009

Question for you: Let’s say I decide to pass on the E71x and buy an unlocked E71. Do you think I should wait for the E71i with FP2 or just get a E71 now?

Matthew Miller
May 8, 2009

Jason, the 2/T key is often overlooked, but don’t you think Nokia could have add a camera button on the side like the E75 or maybe a small camera icon to the 2/T key? It took me a few days to find the focus button myself.

Nova, the E71i is still a rumor and I haven’t seen any confirmation of its existence yet. There will always be something new coming around the corner so you just have to go with what you need and not worry too much about what is coming next.

Hi there, i was caught in the hipe of the e71x. I’ve been wanting an e71 for a while so the news of att offering this was great. However, reading up on things i have a couple questions to see if I will end up returning the device. I’m upgrading from an e70 so just getting used to the keyboard has me stressed.

My question 1- one of the big reasons i went with the att e71x was their voice GPS system. Is something like this already available for the unbranded e71?

also, 2- is there any way i can see my recent messages on the home screen?

3- i understand that the e71x has better camera and FP2, but in terms of functionality is very limited…is there a way of running the e71 system with the better e71x device (i thnk its called reflashing)?

Thanks for any help!

This evening I went to an independent AT&T store and purchased the e71x. When I got to my car, I accessed my contacts and noticed that in the upper left hand corner of the screen where the contact name appeared, the end of the name faded as if the pixels were fading out. I immediately took it back, and the next two phones did the same thing. Has anyone else experienced this fading problem? We didn’t know if the store received a bad lot of phones or if the fading pixels are on all the e71x models.

Mike,

There is a transition fade in long names that goes from letters over to the right in the top title bar if that is what you mean. That is by design and the same thing appears on the unlocked E71. If you actually are in a contact listing for a few seconds the transition will shift right and show you more of the name too.

If you have a short name in your contact list there is no fading. On longer name the right side will fade into the center.

I never noticed this since your contact name is available in the contact card you are in and I never really looked up there anyways.

Chaitanya,

Try changing the home page to google.com and type in url in the search box. And go from there. Eventhough browser is from symbian it has some AT&T fingerprints on it.

Good luck

Does anyone know if the Nokia e71x supports Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync delivering push e-mail and have experience using this function as well as the Quickoffice Suite?

Matthew Miller
May 13, 2009

Mark, you can use the free Mail for Exchange client from Nokia that actually is in the email setup wizard on the E71x to get push email from EAS. I also recently posted a review on RoadSync that gives you a couple more options on the E71x.

Got the phone in the mail yesterday.

First thing I figured out:

No need to pull the sim card, just go to Profiles and select “Offline”.

It will shut down the 3G and phone functions, but wifi can still be used.

Sweet!

Does anyone know if I can buy the E71x from an ATT store without a data plan and just a text messaging plan for $99, or do they force you into the $30 / Month data plan as part of the purchase?

Jason
May 13, 2009

John,

Yes. Or if you already have a call plan, do an upgrade on the AT&T website. We kept our 550 minute plan and added 2 E71x’s with texting. Data plans will turn off/on depending on how much we’ll need them each month.

Thanks for the information about the fading pixels. I purchased the phone today and have been happy with it. Only one problem I can’t figure out. I’ve been trying to install the OliveTree Bible Reader program but haven’t been successful. When I go to the OliveTree help page, I find that many others are having problems installing the software to their e71s as well. I’ve tried to install it using the Nokia PC Suite but with no success. During the install process, the program is rejected. Any suggestions you can provide would be appreciated.

I just got my E71x. I got the wifi working before I put in my SIM card, so I knew it worked. After installing the SIM card, wifi still works. I do not have a data plan, so looks like I’m not having the problem that chaitanya is.

Couple of possibilities. One is that Raja is right in that chaitanya is trying to access an AT&T start page, which can’t be reached via your own wifi connection. The other possibility is that since I just plugged in my old SIM card rather than using the new one that they sent me, that the SIM card that I used doesn’t have instructions to disable the wifi while the one that’s still in the box will disable the wifi when I install it.

Has anyone had their phone suddenly reboot on them? It has happened to me several times while i am using wifi (in offline mode). The phone comes back really quickly so it is not a huge issue, but I just don’t want that to happen during a call.

Thanks

Two comments:

  1. I finally got the BibleReader program installed. You need to turn off online certificate check in the Installed apps options.

  2. I’ve been able to use WiFi with no problems, and I don’t have a data plan but I do have a text messaging package. Also I have a block on my account so I can’t access the Internet through the phone. The WiFi still works fine–no data charges.

Josh, I installed the latest Beta version (3.68 Build 199) from here that states it fixed the certificate issue, http://www.olivetree.com/download/beta/symbian/

For the older version you could also try the steps from the OliveTree forum, http://www.olivetree.com/help/forum/viewtopic.php?t=688

I have both this one and the S60Bible installed and working like a champ on my E71x so I know it can be done.

So I installed Nokia Messaging – pretty cool.

However I read that it’s a trial and will have a subscription fee? I can’t find any actual cost stated anywhere though.

I don’t want to start using it and then find out down the road that it’s expensive. I mean, it’s nice, but not “subscription nice” with other free alternatives out there.

Is this better then ATT’s Express <ail ?

Jason
May 14, 2009

Pankaj,

One thing better over Express Mail is it gives you full functionality over just the wifi – Express Mail requires the phone/3G profile to be enabled to work. (see wifi posts above)

Overall interface is a little more polished as well.

If you have a data plan enabled then I can’t see the benefit of Nokia Mail over Express mail frankly.

I think it is more of a visually appealing thing for me. I really don’t like the DOS/BlackBerry feel to the standard Nokia Messaging client that is used by XpressMail. However, Nokia Email doesn’t show up as an available email client when you click a hyperlink in site or something so it is not well integrated with the OS.

Since they are both free, I recommend you try out both and see what works best for you in your situation since each has its own strengths and weaknesses that make each attractive to different people.

May 14, 2009

Hi Mike,

How did you get a block on internet usage for your line. I got the E71x primarily because it has WiFi and I would prefer if I am blocked from using the 3G data. It gets costly :)

Also, I do have the data plan for now but WiFi works even without the SIM. Hopefully it will be the same once I cancel the data plan in a few days.

Pankaj Lunker
May 14, 2009

Matthew

Only thing I like about Nokia messaging is HTML . Some reason ATT mail was showing me hyper links in mail.

Some time I feel that Nokia mail is slower than ATT ( even though I restricted my Inbox to retrive only 10 messages from hotmail )

I guess I will have to use both for some time and evaluate .

Pankaj

Mike
May 14, 2009

Kashif:

I didn’t have a data plan on my old phone, but every once in a while I would accidentally access the Web and thus incur some charges by the time I cancelled the access. I called AT&T and requested that they place a block on my Internet access. Now that it’s blocked, I get WiFi even with the SIM card installed.

Once you cancel your data plan, you should be able to place a block on Web access and just use WiFi–unless your SIM card is different from mine or AT&T did something they shouldn’t have and I’m the beneficiary of it.

I just upgraded my cellphone from samsung D807 to e71x. I’ve been using it for everyday uses, such as taking few pictures, transfer the pictures via bluetooth, texting, making few short phone calls, no 3G and browsing the internet. Ok So I got Nokia E-Mail installed, and it set up my gmail just fine. However, I tried to set up my work e-mail address (through Mailtrust) with all the info provided from their site, but the mailbox will not populate in nokia e-mail. It tries 3 times to connect and verify the settings, says it fails but that I may be able to connect later once the box is set up. At that point, it puts the Mailtrust address in my messaging folder instead of inside the Nokia E-Mail program. Does anyone know why this is? I want to receive all of my messages as HTML e-mail, but the work one is coming through as plaintxt because it won’t go to the program I’m using to set it up…weird. Also can ANYONE point me in the direction of ANY way to put different firmware on this phone? I work for AT&T and this is the most crippled smartphone I’ve owned in a while. I can’t install most applications I find, and the 300k ringtone limit is fairly ridiculous.

Matthew Miller
May 15, 2009

Michael, ActiveSync is a Windows Mobile only program. Nokia PC Suite is the desktop software for all Nokia smartphones. It does work just fine with Outlook syncing though and I have found it to be more reliable than ActiveSync in the past.

Matthew Miller
May 15, 2009

Tony, going 2-1/2 to 3 days and still having 3 bars of battery left is outstanding for a smartphone. I personally charge most all of my devices every night, but can go about a day and a half in most cases with the E71x. When I watch Hulu, surf, have push email on, take photos, and use the heck out of it I can go a full day, which is awesome for all that I do with the device.

Matthew Miller
May 15, 2009

Jason, I asked Nokia about the subscription on Nokia Messaging/Email and it looks like some other countries are rolling this out with most cases having the data plan monthly fee account for the subscription to email. I have no idea how it will work in the US and Nokia did not seem to know yet either. With so few smartphones officially on US carriers I don’t think it can be via carrier billing and if they ever do charge for it maybe it will be through the Ovi Store or directly through Nokia.

I like using it now, but will have to check again when /if fees are charged. You can always go back to XpressMail too for no cost.

Marc:

I was having the same problem as you the first week I had this phone…the screen would go black, then go to the white Nokia screen and back to the home screen. It never went to the AT&T splash, but it did end whatever I was doing at the time. Twice I was on a call and a few times I was using the web browser. I also noticed that the battery life was horrible (6-8 hours and it died) and the device was getting very warm. I exchanged it at the AT&T store and I have had the new one for 2 days now and it is normal temperature and the battery life is fine. Take it back and exchange it…you have 30 days to return or exchange it for any reason; don’t wait because after that you’ll have to get warranty to replace it and you may get a refurb which could be my old device. Hope that helps.

Matthew Miller
May 15, 2009

I agree with Daniel, this is not normal behavior and you should get a replacement. Mine has never reset and I have it customized and loaded up with apps. The only time it gets warm is when I am running Gravity, Skyfire and Hulu, Nokia Email, RoadSync, and more at once :)

Hi, great site and tips. I’ve had an E71x since May 13th, and so far I really like it. Here’s what I have successfully installed/setup so far:

  1. Nokia messaging (email) – works, but doesn’t seem to push my gmail – I have to login to see it
  2. Mail for Exchange – pushes my work email very fast
  3. Opera mini – great browser, flash would be nice though
  4. YouTube – works great on wifi, but long videos won’t load when using 3G
  5. Nokia Sportstracker
  6. Google Maps (very cool)
  7. Nokia Internet radio (very cool!)

From what I have read about the differences between the E71 and E71x, it seems the biggest change is not being able to install custom themes and not being able to setup different home screens (e.g. work and personal, etc.).

Does anyone know how to install themes downloaded from the internet on the e71x? or setup different home screens?

Thanks for all the great information on this excellent new phone. I ordered one of your 16GB microsd cards and am really happy with the amount of data I can get on the phone.

I am having one problem though. I ordered one of the AD-50 headphone adapters but it doesn’t seem to work right for me. If I plug it all the way in, I only get one channel of sound (the right, fwiw). If I pull it out some of the way, I can get both. I also tried with a 2.5 to 3.5 cord from a small stereo speaker set and got the same results.

Is there any chance that the e71x requires a different adapter, perhaps to accommodate a voice channel coming in from a headset? If not it seems like there is a problem with my phone and I will need to return it.

Hi, I have been “researching” online about using wifi for free if you don’t have a data plan and so far I have had totally opposite answers, some people say that AT&T charges you for accessing the internet whether its wifi or their network. And some people say that it’s totally free. I just got my phone yesterday through wirefly and I didnt have to get the data plan. I really would like to be able to use wifi when I am in school but I am worried about being charged for it, obviously I can’t afford it that’s why I did not get the data plan in the first place. Could you please clear this confusion for me? And also if you know of a way to use wifi for free, I’d really appreciate your help. THANKS!

Bruce – I had the same issue with sound when I got a regular stereo adapter (with right ear only), but returned it and got a special 3.5 to 2.5 in Radio Shack’s cell phone section. Works fine now. The audio adapter should have three rings on the tip (unlike a regular stereo adapter).

polymergirl,

wifi is completely free. However, I have noticed if the mobile can’t connect to the wifi access point(e.g. your home network), it will use the 3G network.

Some applications, like Google Maps, have settings to define what access point the mobile must use.

Matthew Miller great site I’m impressed… well I got my E71 here are my thoughts:

Positive: - GPS is great I love the Nokia Map Loader (am going to travel for one year so download the maps now) - Looks great - My 2nd smartphone had a blackberry before and I like it - Getting used to the keyboard

Negative: - I only get one day out of my battery life – I have push emails coming through, speak for around 1hr each day, I leave Bluetooth on all the time as I use it in my car… I have turned down the Display setting power saver time out and light time out to 15 seconds

Answers I Need: 1. Can you assist with deleting email accounts as I installed Windows Live for my Hotmail and have loads of accounts setup its a bit confusing

  1. Is there any other way to maximise battery life of this phone?

Finally picked up an E71x last week. Like the form factor, keyboard is useable, but comming from Windows Mobile there are a couple things that bug me.

1) downloaded Skyfire and it works great but there doesn’t seem to be a way to set it as default browser. Very annoying. 2) Even though can’t set as default browser, thought I could just cut and paste links. Problem is, when skyfire is open, there is no way to paste in the address bar that I can find. 3) Trying to use the gmail app is annoying since it needs permission anytime it wants to connect to the net. Need to look for an alternative.

Also downloaded a copy of gravity. Great twitter app. Beats, by far, any of the twitter apps on Windows Mobile.

One other thing, after downloading and installing apps, is there any way to move the .sis files to the memory card without connecting to the PC first as outlined in the manual? I’m a little miffed that the download doesn’t give the option to save to storage card like WinMo does.

Overall though, I think this is a great little phone and will work well once I get a little more familiar with S60 and get past some of these little niggles. Well worth the $99.00 price tag.

Thanks for this very useful website . . . I have been looking into getting the e71 for quite a while now. My AT&T contract qualifies me to get a new phone so I am thinking of going for the e71x. However, I live in Egypt so I will primarily use the phone with a local Egyptian SIM card. Can you let me know if the e71x should have any difficulty with this, assuming I can get it unlocked? I thought i read you cannot customize the shortcut menus on the E71x. I just did, if you go to Settings/Themes/Idle Screen and set it to Vertical Icon bar. Thanks for the updates so far.

To those with a question about restricting data and receiving MMS: I spoke to a AT&T representative today and the person said that shutting off the data connection also blocks the means that MMS is delivered to and sent from the device. So to Jeff and Mike, I can confirm your suspicions.

July 2, 2009

Things I have noticed thus far, well the first one is that I have not been able to find a way to import all sim contacts from a previous sim that has 150 contacts onto the phone, the only option I saw is import one at a time which I am not going to do. Has anyone found an option for import all on phone? I can go down to the att store and they can do a mass transfer to my current sim, but then they are still unmodifiable because they are sim contacts on the phone.

I also have a mac and some people are saying that are having no problem syncing up, I have been able to connect via data cable(mass storage mode) and transfer pics and other data. I also have been able to get the bluetooth to work, but as far as isync goes, it says it does not recognize me, anyone find a work around with that?

Hmmm, what else, oh yeah, do we need to format a media card when we put it in or will it be fine and always be called “no name” :) I have been saving downloads to the phone, but really should get everything over to the media card.

I have used Nokia Messaging and the GMAIL app for receiving my gmail mail, I seem to favor the gmail app a bit from a graphical standpoint(minus the icon, how pixelated can it get!) But the nokia messaging seems to be checking my mail every 5 minutes like it said, and it is weird when you erase an email it keeps the header still in there. Push with gmail? Is that possible, kind of like having a blackberry? Any thoughts on this email debate I am extremely interested in, since nokia messaging and the gmail app are our choices.

Any thoughts or comments on any of this above would be extremely welcomed.

Besides that, the Nokia E71x, although I was pretty hard on it when I first got it the other day, I must say I am liking this phone more than any blackberry I have used, and dare I say it, iPhone. This may be the sleakest, most functional, and expandable phone out there

Any answers or comments on those topics would be very helpful.

My question for the experts- in the messaging portion (the same folder that has text messages, etc.) I created two mailboxes named ‘hotmail’ before I figured out how to install it properly (well, the dude at the At& t store did it for me). Now, I’m stuck with these two bogus mailboxes that for some reason have become the “default” when I try to email out pictures from my camera-phone. Since they’re not set up to work, no pictures go out—they just sit in my outbox queue. Anyone know how to delete these unused mailboxes? I have Nokia Messaging for my gmail and yahoo but it wouldn’t allow me to put hotmail on it so this was the alternative (put it in the text messaging spot). If you know how to put hotmail on Nokia Messsaging, that’d be great too (that’s what the At&t store dude couldn’t figure out).

I apologize for not knowing the ‘lingo’ but hope you can understand my question in spite of my awkward and lengthy language! :)

I cannot install anything, apps/themes on my new e71x. When I try to install something from wifi, it gives all the confirmation and seems like its downloading. But then nothing happens. If I try to install it using nokia pc suite, it says the installer on the phone does not support it (even the sis packages I downloaded from nokia website). So, is it just my phone or do I need to do something special for it to work? BTW I tried turning certificates off already. Please advise me if I need to get this set replaced.

Regarding wi-fi an 3-G,

It is possible to create a list of access points to de-prioritize the 3G, and prioritize known wi-fi access points. I have a list of 3 commonly used wi-fi points, with MediaNet listed as the 4th choice. The phone has defaulted to wi-fi consistently, despite the existence of 3G access. Also, just to be safe, I’ve changed the setting to only register with the data counter when necessary, rather than by default – again, to prioritize the wi-fi.

Right now, I’m trying to use less 3G as I decided whether to continue carrying AT&T’s PDA personal bundle. If it’s true that the phone won’t access wi-fi without a data plan, there’s really no reason for me to have this phone then. The steps are:

Destinations: 1. Menu – Settings – Config. – Connection – Destinations – Internet. From the Internet screen, change the priority of the access points using SELECT – ORGANIZE. MEdia Net is my 4th choice for Internet access.

The second setting is

Data Counter:

  1. Menu – Settings – Config. – Connection – Destinations – Data Counter. Change Data counter connection from When available to When needed.

On the second setting there are some advantages to having the data counter set to when available, especially on an unlimited data plan. Without a data plan, in combination with the step above, its as close to finding a way to turn off 3G as I’ve found.

Google Maps on e71x: It works fine/perfect, but it will incur data charges as soon as it is started – so if there is no data plan, I would avoid it like plague. AT&T also offers turn by turn service for a monthly fee. Nokia (OVI) maps 3.0 will install all maps (NA, Europe, ASIA etc.) on the phone’s SD card itself (pretty neat), although for enabling turn by turn Nokia charges fee (one can look at the maps, plan routes without moving some distance etc. without incurring any fee).

Hi all, new user and just had a question about Internet Radio. Every link that I’ve found for this app has lead me to a dead site that is no longer available. Has anyone downloaded this app recently?

Also, to answer a previous question, I have found that the only way you can eliminate the glow that comes from under the keys (center select button mostly) is to turn off the blinking notification. It’s kind of a toss up with whether you want to have your phone blink if you miss a call or get a message, or watch your phone glow every couple seconds all day.

A little off topic, but in comparison from E71 to E71x: I noticed the 71 is made in Finland, the 71x in Korea. I’ve used the 71x quite a bit and find it’s build quality quite good — Is the build quality of the 71 any better or different? Are seams tighter, or certain details “nicer?” Thanks

I just received my E71x. Everything was going well, until I tried to download the Gmail App. I just switched over from a Blackberry and loved that I could access my Gmail directly, and it looked just like a smaller version of regular gmail. However, when I tried to install the app on my E71x it says “Sorry, the Gmail application does not work on your E71. However you can access Gmail on the go by using the web version.” Has anyone ever seen this? If I can’t get the Gmail app to load I’m going to have to return the phone. Weirdly, Google maps and the Google Search apps download and work perfectly. What the heck is going on?? Would love some help. Thanks a million.

LorryS> It doesn’t matter who your broadband ISP is at home- ATT Mobility does not charge you for wifi use in this situation since you already pay Comcast, Roadrunner, Charter, etc.

August 24, 2009

Another tip to keep in mind- on Sept. 6 or 7 ATT is reported to be implementing a mandatory data plan for all smartphones (new activations). Check our boygeniusreport or howardforums for more info on this. Anyway, you might want to grab an E71x before this takes effect so you can get away w/ using wifi only.

I would like to note that it IS in fact possible to block GPRS connections, and to allow Java apps to use data connections for the whole session without prompting. Sadly, these solutions involve using an obscure rom patches, and some tech savvy.

In order to implement either solution HelloOx2 is needed (google it, no space)

After that is applied, it will allow you to install unsigned applications that need dev. capabilities.

HelloOx is bundled with rompatcher (one such application), which is what you need for the rest.

Instructions on getting the the patches and setting up the program can be found on google, or various forums and websites such as the “symbian underground” (as pathetic as it my sound.) A place for the java permissions patch can be found at the google support forum, http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google%20Mobile/thread?tid=56a8d6c94eb9be85&hl=en

I did this to my phone, and I have not encountered any performance issues or crashes.

(This does NOT unlock the phone from the carrier, so I believe it is legal)

Hi Matthew Miller. Were you ever able to confirm if Nokia PC Suite will sync “Notes” in Outlook contacts with the E71x? I assume, phone numbers, email addresses, addresses, tasks, Calendar appointments and reminders, etc. will all sync with no problems. I have always had a Windows Mobile smartphone in the past but would love to get my hands on the E71x. Thank you!

Jason

Clarification to the above… I would be syncing via the USB cable and not through an Exchange Server. Thank you!

August 29, 2009

So I went to an AT&T store and brought my laptop with Nokia PC Suite installed. I’ve never used the software nor have I ever owned a Nokia phone but was able to connect to the E71x, update its sync software, sync Outlook calendar items and contacts without any problems. Notes showed up flawlessly. To my surprise, the Nokia contacts have even more details than Outlook offers so I got what I wanted and more. I called my brother, he said the voice quality was very good, I surfed the web, checked some MLB scores, took a few pictures and videos. Excellent feeling phone and intuitive interfaces. Great stuff! Way to go Nokia! Makes me wonder why I ever bothered with clunky, esoteric WinMo phones….

Hello Matthew Miller, Can you please make a post on how to use wifi, how to access it, and how to use internet w/o data plan? My sister bought the e71x and I couldn’t find ….. (I don’t know what to look for-never had a phone with wi-fi). She had WLAN in applications/settings and was able to see wireless networks in my area. I’m not sure if I can access web through this without charges, and in general what to use and how to access internet, when you don’t have a data plan. ( I probably sound like a dummie, but I really need your help. Thank you so much:)

Im not sure if anyone has mentioned this but I found 2 apps that have helped me a lot with this phone, both are by the same company so they integrate well together

Handy Shell and Handy Calendar by Epocware, Handy Shell will change your standby screen(displays time, shortcut row, BT/message/theme/profile and appointment), taskmanager(with ram and mem usage meters), application launcher. I only use the “Today” screen its mapped to the end key(it allows me to switch from active standby to the handy shell). It also features a search tool if you start typing letters or numbers it will search your phone for contacts or apps which makes it way easy to use.

Handy calendar is obviously a calendar app visually it looks like the calendar on the e71. I still haven’t really used it too much yet so I can’t say much for it but its seems really good at least visually.

both programs can be found at http://www.epocware.com/ or prob other symbian sites

now all i need to find is an app that will help me change the shortcuts of the phone or the ability to add a long press on the 3 buttons…

help! is there a way to block particular texts from coming to your phone?? i applied for an on line loan the other day and ever since then i’ve received a total of 87 text messages all saying they’re from number 1-111 487 000. How do i stop these?? there is no information on the actual text…only gobbly gook! i have replied STOP, but they keep coming in!! ALSO is there a way to delete ALL messages at once?? surely, you don’t have to delete old messages one at a time on this phone! does anyone else have problems with the tiny keyboard buttons like i do?? i go to dial a number or type text, and additional characters come up from pressing more than 1 button at a time!! ARGH!! i’m not very satisfied with this phone, and I love Nokia products!

I’ve seen my questions in here several times but no answers to them yet…

1) How do i delete an email I set up that is not working. My messaging screen is weird now. It lists: New Message Inbox comcast (my error) (blank spot???) IM Etc….. I would like to get rid of the “comcast” and the blank spot.

2) Has anyone figured out how to by pass the 300kb msg/tones? I created many using Audacity for my last phone which could only be 30 secs long but even those are saying they’re “too big”…

3) (new one) I can’t figure out how to post pics to websites. Ex.. Facebook, it made me set up an email (thus question #1) and i did something wrong, all i want to do is take a pic & post it, is it really that complicated??

Thanks everyone for all the info, didn’t understand half of it but I’m learning ;-)

I keep reading about paying $100 for this phone, I NEVER buy my phone directly from AT&T, always, always buy from Radio Shack… I paid $50 for this phone, they waived the activation fees on both phones & there was no shipping or waiting in long AT&T lines. This is the 3rd phone I’ve gotten thru R.S., their online prices are even better BUT they should match them in-store if you tell them the price you saw online. PLUS the rep brought every phone i was interested in, out for me to hold & play with before I bought it, then boxed it up to send back to the company if I didn’t want that one! Granted that’s probably not “typical” just found myself an excellent sales rep! Also have 30 day guarantee, i had the Impression a few weeks ago, didn’t like it, took it back, he handed me another phone & said try this one, again if you don’t like it bring it back. Seriously the transaction & service were stupendous! Never go anywhere else again!!

I’ve had my E71x about 4 weeks now, and so far I think it’s an amazing phone. The one problem I’ve had with it involves the music player & earphones. I have been using standard earbuds with the adapter, but the sound is VERY low, even with the player volume at 100%. Is there a way to turn the sound up? I cant find any settings on the phone itself to turn the volume up. Do you have to use the Nokia earphones with this phone? Do I need to use another music app besides AT&T Music player? All help is appreciated!

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this but I had trouble downloading applications though WIFI since I had a “Data Block” placed on my phone. Whenever I would go to download the Google Apps, Skyfire, or Youtube mobile app., it would not allow me to do this.

I ended up removing the SIM card while I connected to my home WIFI and it worked.

I have a Data Block and was using (att) MediaNet to access the web for a while. I checked my account and the block is there. I’m assuming that MediaNet acts like a web browser for my WIFI connection. But, to be on the safe side I installed Skyfire web browser and currently using this for now.

Recently, I had a few problems with Skyfire and it seems to be an authentication issue. I rebooted my WIFI connection and restarted my phone with no luck. I’ve since moved on to the Google Search app. an using this for now. I’ve read a few post about the Skyfire problem with no resolution. I really think the MediaNet application and others that tie to data usage cause many problems for 3rd party applications. Has anyone had any of these problems with a fix?

Is there anyay to make an unlicenssed app run on a e71x? I read where people have used HelloOx and other products on the e71, but not specifically on a e71x. October 21, 2009

I’m looking for a better, 3rd party calendar app for my E71x. I finally made a decision to go from Palm to Symbian. While the Symbian OS is infinitely more stable than the Palm OS, I’m really disappointed in the variety of 3rd party apps that are available for Symbiam vs. the myriad 3rd party apps available for Palm OS.

To put it bluntly, when compared with the default calendar on the Palm, the default calender on my E71x is bumkiss. The display is okay, but its versatility is nil.

For example, I have a lot of recurring events in my schedule. In the Palm, when a repeating event occurs, I could schedule it to go every day, every week (i.e., every Friday); every month (i.e., the 2nd of each month) or every month (i.e., the first Friday of every month).

I don’t know if it was lack of foresight on the part of those who developed the default calendar app or just plain incompetence, but many of those functions are sorely lacking on my E71x.

Secondly, your list of contacts and recent calls are not integrated (who came up with that bright idea). Additionally, I like to place snail mail addys and other info with all my contacts. On my Palm, all information was readily available for editing and would also display on command. On my E71x, you can add additional info, but it’s like you have to walk through Jack Benny’s vault to be able to access it and to view that additional information.

I have researched a number of 3rd party calendar and contact apps, but many are stated as compatible for the E71, but not the E71x.

I’m hoping that developers step up to the plate and begin prolifically developing useful apps to the degree that they have been developed for the Palm OS, but I guess I won’t hold my breath.

Have E71x. Used Nokia mail to set up email accounts for a gmail address and an inbox address. The gmail works fine, but the inbox does not. Each time it does a query, the previous messages left in the inbox address on my phone are removed. So instead of making a list of emails received over the past several hours or days, I get one or two and if they are not read by the time the server is next queried, they are gone and not available to me except by going to my pc.

Any ideas what could be wrong? I have looked at potential settings changes both at inbox.com and on the phone, but don’t see anything that I could change.

Thanks, Keith

RE: customizing the layout…not sure if someone has already uncovered this as I haven’t read through all of the posts yet, but I recently found out how to customize the default 6 apps on the main screen

Menu>Settings>Config>General>Personalization>Idle Screen Mode>Shortcuts>Shortcut 1 -6

You can also customize the default Menu and Camera selections.

So…can remove the default Email app and replace with Nokia Messaging… :)

I haven’t figured out how to customize the actual buttons yet…apparently this is not possible.

A good way to insure you don’t rack up data charges is to call up your provider and tell them you want to opt out of data transfer. This is independent of texting services. I run Opera, Fring, and Gmail and it worked for them after setting up access points.

One problem I am having is with Opera Mini. I used to have a version that I could “allow for session” an internet connection. When I installed newer version this option dissapeared. Is there any way to default this to always or does anybody know of the version that “allows for session”?

I am trying to get PUSH email on my phone from my corporate server. We use Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA) and I usually check my email via the mobile browser on my e71x. When I try to use the email set up on the phone, it requires me to get the incoming and outgoing mail server which my company will not give out. I tried using SEVEN EMAIL, and that ate up my battery much. I couldn’t get RoadSyncy to work and also EMOZE chewed up the battery. Anyone else have any ideas or other programs that could work? Thanks.

Hello everyone!

I am a new e71x user and right of the bat I love the phone but I hate AT&T for taking a good product (e71) and turning it into junk. This device fights me every step of the way from setting up my contacts, (which wont disply if saved to sim and phone) email set up which I figured out, to using the Ovi store which is apparently blocked by AT&T because of all the free apps they offer that AT&T charges for on the Media Mall. This device is great Nokia product but AT&T has done nothing to add to the quality. In my opinion they have turned a great phone into a garbage.

Trevor,

Welcome to the E71x. It is a great phone once you get almost all of the ATT out. I have had mine since late Sept.09. There are several sites and blogs that help. Read, read and read. This is my first PDA and I would not trade for an Iphone. Two notes!! Get rid of ATT first. Then figure out how to sign your own apps. It is worth the hassle.

Trevor, Almost forgot, the E71 and E71x do NOT use the same operating system. Therefore, some apps will not work for the E71x that work on the E71.

Hello Everyone! I just got my E71x and I love it, but I have one question..Is there a way to make faces in messages or a “add symbols” button? I haven’t been able to find anything on this subject. I enjoy the ( ) symbols but can’t find them anywhere. This phone is so modern that I am thinking that it has to have more symbols than this. Please help!

E-mailed Nokia support about Point and Find on the E71x 3 days ago, should hear back soon. The site says it’s supported, but like at least a handful of others, mine isn’t working. I’ll report back if they give a definite answer on whether it works and how to properly install it if it does work ;)

amy t, The calendar is okay, but it will not let you do a “Second or Third Tuesday” setting. It will repeat for week, year, or same day each month. I would also like to do “day of week” per month repeat, but can not. I am very satisfied with my first E71x smartphone.

my company is running many users on the E71x. we are also utilizing microsoft exchange server to sync up calendars, contacts, email, etc. here is the issue – models we purchased sept09 automatically connected to our exchange servers when setup was initiated. models we are purchasing today are requesting manual setup to the point we need to manually key in address. most recently, i have one device that will not connect at all.

Anyone with any suggestions as to WHY we are having these issues and how we can correct?

You can install Nokia Maps 3.0 but not the latest version (3.03). The reason being the latest (3.03) is completely free and therefore disabled by at&t because they want you to use their at&t navigator software instead.

You can find instructions on installing Nokia Maps 3.0 from: http://janetalkstech.com/installing-nokia-maps-3-0-1-on-the-nokia-e71x

I personally installed it and it works great! Had to pay the $15 per year to get turn by turn Navigation but its well worth it for me as I do not have a data plan and with this app you can pre-download maps so u dont need one. Only thing is at&t have somehow disabled the voice guidance which sucks, I hate at&t. Tried to search online for a way to turn it back on but could not find anything. If anyone knows how to enable voice guidance please let me know.

Thanks.

Reception/connectivity/dropped calls problem: The e71x looked great and there are may glowing reviews, however, at least in nw metro chicago, the phone has inconsistent signal strenght — one secone 3 bars, the next second 1 or 0 bars, it is a call dropper, garbled voice quality, frequent 1 bar or 0 bar for signal strenght. Maybe is just a bad phone or maybe just our bad luck to have got a lemon, but it is destined to go to ebay auction for $75 starting. Unanswered final issue, this is an unlocked e71x being used on an “old” att legacy platform, primarily for calls, text messaging, and monitoring/responding to emails on aol.com. At&t inside and sales reps are all over the map as to the compatibility of an unlocked e71x with At&t service — some say “don’t” others say “its just fine” and some say “too much to think about”

My E71x (ATT) randomly shuts off or reboots. This has been happening repeatedly since yesterday. (Prior to yesterday, it would happen once or twice a week.) I tried to update the firmware to v. 3.28 (from 3.27), but can’t via Nokia Software Updater or OVI, because the phone won;t stay on long enough to do the install. I don’t have a data plan to do the update via the phone. It got so bad I took the SIM card out and put it in a spare phone. I left the E71x on (in offline mode) and the random rebooting / shutdown stopped. The phone worked perfectly. I put the SIM back into the E71x and the problem recurred. (The SIM card works perfectly in the spare phone.) Is this an ATT 3G network issue? Any suggestions? Thanks.
