AT&T Nokia E71x: Q&A roundup

I am working on several posts regarding the Nokia E71x and S60 in general designed to help the new S60 owner. As I continue to roll those out and look to provide timely assistance to my readers, I have decided to post a bunch of questions and answers in a single post since I have spent quite a bit of time responding to many of these in the comments to each of my blog posts. Often I get the same questions asked over and over because my response may be hidden down in the comments and not easily found by readers.

nokiae71x_firstlookshots7

As you look through these questions, please feel free to leave your answers to the questions I have at the end that I was unable to answer and also post any further questions you have. I will try to make a post like this from many of the questions I get asked in the comments to serve as a resource to you all.

Questions on the Nokia E71x

  1. How do I lock the keypad? Press the left soft key then the Fn key in quick succession (within 1.5 seconds of each other) in this order.
  2. Do you have any experience with QuickOffice on the E71x? QuickOffice is included on many Nokia devices today and the Eseries devices are blessed with the client that allows you to create new documents as well. These include Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents. The version loaded on the E71x is 4.1.x and it does not include support for Office 2007 files. You can select upgrade from your E71x and see that the full new version is something like $39.
  3. Can you post a tutorial on how to use WiFi to make VoIP calls on the E71x? I will add this to my list of articles to write about the E71x. For now though, you can install fring or Nimbuzz to make VoIP calls on the device with very little effort on your part.
  4. I have installed Opera Mini, but when I use it a window pops up stating “Allow application to use network and send or receive data?”. This happens constantly with Opera Mini and Skype, is there a way to turn this off? It should only happen once when you launch the application and then you select “Allow for this session” in the pop-up. You can also go into Settings>Application Manager>Installed apps and scroll to Opera Mini. Then press the left soft key for Options>Settings. In here make sure that Network access is set to Ask first time. I wish you could select something like Always, but that doesn’t seem to be an option here so you will get the pop-up just once when you launch the application.
  5. Where can I find the online E71x User Guide? Visit the Nokia USA site for the official guide in PDF format.
  6. Are there keys on the keyboard I can press that act as shortcuts for the on-screen 4×3 layout? Yes, you can press 1, 2, 3, and * for the top row, 4, 5, 6, and # for the second row, and 7, 8, 9, 0 for the bottom row to very quickly jump to that folder or application shortcut.
  7. I’ve installed Nokia Sports Tracker, but cannot access my training history. Clicking the middle enter button (action button on directional pad) takes me out of the app. Any tips to get this working? Sorry, this is the same behavior I am seeing on the E71x in Nokia Sports Tracker as well.
  8. How do you get Nokia Maps 2 working on the E71x? Why would I want this over AT&T Navigator or Google Maps? There are a couple of ways to get Nokia Maps on your E71x. If you go to the Nokia Maps site you can select the 6650 Fold and install as directed on the E71x. The download files for none of the other devices appears to work properly. A reader also pointed out that you can go to nokia.mobi/maps in your S60 browser and select the Download link. Choose the Nokia 5700 XpressMusic device and install version 1.0 of Nokia Maps. Then go back to this same nokia.mobi/maps site and download the version for the E71x to get the Nokia Maps 2.0 version up and running. The benefit in using Nokia Maps is that you can preinstall maps on your device or storage card before traveling and use Nokia Maps without needing to have a data connection. I have used this in Singapore and Spain on my S60 devices and it has worked quite well. You won’t get map updates, traffic, and other connected info, but it works quite well for basic navigation needs. BTW, there is a Nokia Maps 3.0 client on the Nokia Beta Labs site, but it is very buggy and only works on a few selected devices at the moment. I haven’t tried it since the Nokia Maps 2.0 client meets my current needs and works well.
  9. Have you tried out the Garmin Mobile XT navigation software? I haven’t and see there is no download for the program. I understand it comes loaded on a microSD card and will work on the E71x if you use the microSD card it is loaded upon. I find the Nokia Maps works just fine for me for free and don’t have the need to pay the $80+ for the Garmin software at this time.
  10. Is there a good podcast streaming application for the E71x? Nokia Podcasting is a great application for downloading podcasts to your device to listen to, but so far it does not appear to work on the E71x even after the installation looks to be successful. I am trying out Resco News and it does give you the ability to download podcasts to the E71x, but does require you to go into each feed and select to download a podcast. You can stream podcasts from many hosts by visiting the podcasts website and selecting the MP3 version. This usually lets you stream and/or save the file to your microSD card.
  11. Can you remap the one-touch keys on the E71x like you can on the E71? Unfortunately, this capability is not available on the E71x and you cannot do anything to change the default key assignments. This is very unfortunate since these keys do provide you with some efficient and quick access to common functions (create a new SMS, create a new email, or create a new calendar appointment.
  12. Can you use the E71x without a SIM card and connect via WiFi? Yes, I switch my SIM card all the time and am able to use the E71x just fine without a SIM card.

Questions I don’t yet have answers for

  1. Is it possible to install iSMS on the E71x? iSMS is an unsigned application and you need to sign it for your particular device for it to work. I followed the detailed directions posted on Symbian Guru , but am still waiting for my certificate to try out installation on the E71x. I will not try the hacking method on my E71x as I want to keep the device in a condition that most users will.
  2. Sometimes when I receive a call from a contact it shows their number instead of their name. At other times, their name appears. Do you know how to fix this so their name appears every time?
  3. Is there an application to search your calendar?
  4. Can you provide instructions on how to reflash your E71x? Sorry, I have not tried this with any of my Nokia devices and plan to leave this E71x in the default configuration so I can respond to queries from readers and help you all out. Only the brave and adventurous S60 owner will try this and while it may provide you with a more functional device I don’t plan to cover that here on Nokia Experts. There are a few other sites and forums that should be able to help you out.

Great guide, Matthew. Thanks for the link, as well, though it only references back to this same post, lol.

Sorry Ricky, that’s what happens when you create a post and check final edits very late at night. Should be a good link to help people out now.

“Sometimes when I receive a call from a contact it shows their number instead of their name. “

On other Nokia devices this is normally caused by the number being assigned to more than one contact. Make sure the number only appears once in your address book and it should behave properly.

When I load the 6650 version of Nokia Maps and try to use it, I’m asked to buy a license for between $7.99 & $42.99.

Matthew Miller
May 12, 2009

There is a license to use some of the advanced features of Nokia Maps (like voice navigation and the guides), but you should be able to use most of the navigational features for free.

ScooterG
May 12, 2009

Well, I just told the program to exit the license screen and it seems to be working. Some other quirks: I can’t use the R or M buttons to start a search. To zoom out, use backspace and to zoom in, use shift, not the assigned # and *.

ScooterG

BTW, thanks for the nice Q&A write up!

Matthew Miller
May 12, 2009

ScooterG, thanks for the comments. I wrote about the add zoom in and out in another post too. You know, I think I may try removing Nokia Maps and reinstalling using that other nokia.mobi method and see if the QWERTY keyboard is better supported on some other version. I doubt it, but it is worth a try, right?

ScooterG
May 12, 2009

Trying it now. Also, the link should be nokia.mobi/maps

No go. There is no option for E71x at any point, before or after installing version 1 for the 5700. When trying to use the E71 version, I get “Cannot open application. Please install latest version from nokia.com/maps”.

When I lock the keyboard on my E71x it displays the date and time as a screen saver (power saver). The problem is that in most lighting the date and time cannot be seen because the screen is so dark. Is their a setting I can change so the date and time can been seen while the keyboard is locked?

Brian
May 12, 2009

I have returned my e71x and purchased the unlocked e71. I was so disappointed. QuickOffice is a great app and it worked great on my e62, I could even edit docs and xlss. Not so on the e71x. View only unless you pay for a $25 upgrade. To have waited so long for this device and read so many reviews of the e71, AT&T really screwed the e71x down tight. Unusable from a business perspective.

Matthew Miller
May 12, 2009

Brian, I am able to create new documents on my E71x with the Quickoffice version that was included. While there are a couple things that are locked down, it is still a VERY functional device and I am pretty happy with it. The unlocked E71 is a great choice though without having to worry about any lock down issues.

ScooterG
May 12, 2009

In order to create docs, you have to go into Updates and Upgrades with in Quickoffice and install FREE Quickoffice v4 (Free for AT&T Customers).

I haven’t seen any mention anywhere of the second camera missing from the E71x that was on the E71.

Can the camera on the back of the E71x be used for Skype via wifi? This will determine if I bring a laptop along on trips this summer.

Matthew Miller
May 12, 2009

I’ve NEVER used the front one on my unlocked E71 and don’t think there is anyway to even use it here in the US. Anyone ever get this camera working with Skype or anything?

May 12, 2009

So no Nokia Podcasting on the E71x? I guess I have to release the S60 version of Escarpod then.

Jason
May 12, 2009

So reading a bit deeper, the camera will do streaming vids via the ATT “Video Share” service. There has to be an E71 app out there to use this as a web cam as well.

So i’m really stuck at this point…i’ve waited like 5 months for the e71x to drop (really b/c i could only be happy with the black color) and now it seems to be a worse overall phone than the unlocked. i have 2 ?’s for you…

1) for someone who is not that into phones and has never had a nokia is the E71x a good purchase? Would i be happy with it? I’m mainly interested in using the internet and doing general things (texting, email, etc)

2) Is it possible to purchase an ALL black unlocked E71 in the states? This would be my ideal situation but from what i’ve researched you’d have to buy the all black metal housing and replace it with the grey….

Great website BTW

Matthew Miller
May 12, 2009

Idean,

I consider myself a “power user” and still really enjoy the E71x. The form factor is awesome and while AT&T and/or Nokia did lock down some things the device is still VERY functional and should meet most people’s needs. You cannot purchase an all black unlocked E71 and I have yet to see anyone reflash an E71x to the E71 firmware. Thanks for your comments too.

In reference to your 4th item: Getting rid of the window that pops up stating “Allow application to use network and send or receive data?”.

I am getting this constantly with the gmail java app. When I go to the app manager, select gmail and then Options>Settings, I select Network Access, but for this app it only gives two options: “not allowed” “ask every time”

Has anyone figured out how to tell the gmail app to quit asking if it can use the network?

As background, I have a e71x without a data plan. So I use gmail/browser over wifi. Can someone who uses the gmail java app that has a data plan from att try to go to the app manager/gmail options->settings and see if the Network access option “Allow for this session” comes up for them.

Thanks for all the great info!!

Dan

Dan, you have to Exit the Gmail app, not hide it…but realize that it won’t work in the “push” fashion that you seem to be going for.

Hi everyone! I’m not an expert on PDAs as the e71x is my first one so, I’m here to see what I can do with it. Thanks for all the useful tips but I hope you can write a step by step process for these different apps for beginners. Another thing I’d like to share is that, I read from this blog that you haven’t found an answer to why sometimes a name appears when a person calls, and sometimes it doesn’t, as asked by a user. I’ve been a nokia user for a decade and I’ve encountered the same problem numerous times. One solution I found was to organize my phonebook names and phone numbers. Make sure that the names and phone numbers are not saved twice. For instance, you saved a name, John Smith with home phone number 123456780, not realizing that the same phone number is already saved under the same name but is typed differently, like J. Smith. This causes the phone system some confusion and wouldn’t know if it needs to show J. smith on the caller ID or John Smith, so it just shows the number from the caller. This happens to me sometimes when a person tells me he’s changed his phone number and instead of editing it, I just save the info again as if it were a ‘new contact’, but forget to delete the original one. I’m not a guru but I hope this helped. Keep up the good work!

@Matthew Miller You mentioned the E71x was “Locked Down” by Nokia/AT&T. What features have been excluded from the E71x when compared with the unlocked E71.

May 13, 2009

I actually have a question regarding the keyboard–is there a program like on the BlackBerry where you can hold down a key and get caps for that versus typing shift + key combo?

Thanks!

Matthew Miller
May 13, 2009

CN, on the Nokia E75 this is part of the OS and does it just like you described. However, I have not seen this on the E71 or E71x :( I am not sure a program can be added to provide this and this is one of those disappointing inconsistencies in S60.

  • Both cameras can be used with Mobiola and act as a wireless webcam for desktop Skype or any other web camera applications. You have a choise of 3 modes: Front camera/Rear camera/Phone Screenshot
  • If phonebook has 2 names with 1 phone number, it may not show the name. You may see only the phone number.
  • Looks like hold down a key to type other letters or number does not work on E71x. Works ok on E71.
  • You cannot remove MediaNet connection from connection list and may accidentaly go online via MediaNet and if yout have a data plan it may cost you $$$.

I downloaded and installed Skype and I am getting this as well constantly “Allow application to use network and send or receive data?”.

I went to open Apps and it is not open. When going into the App Manager and selecting Settings for Skype I get the same as Dan above

Options>Settings, I select Network Access, but for this app it only gives two options: “not allowed” “ask every time”

Does anyone know how to fix this. Also it tells me the phone does not allow socket connections and has to use the HTTP connection. What does this mean?

Does the WLAN stay connected all of the time even if you are not using it for anything. It appears unless I am on the internet I can not get any of the apps to use the WLAN connection. I DL and installed Nimbuzz as suggested and everytime I have connection problems and can only get it to connect with the Proxyless Operator connection which I don’t even know what that is.

Thanks so much!

May 13, 2009

Thanks, Matthew, for answering my question regarding the keyboard. Also, regarding the front-facing camera on the unlocked North American version, other than AT&T video share (which really doesn’t do true video conferencing), are there any other applications that make use of the front camera?

Hey, Matt, got an E71x here, I have installed nokia maps and copied the actual maps from another nokia maps installation from another phone. However, I cannot get the address search function working, please confirm. BTW, I tried both nokia maps 1.02 and 2.0 on the E71x, neither can search. Same memory card, plugged into a E51 searches just fine

I am entering my second week of owning an E71 purchased in the UK as this is where I live

Not my first experience with Symbian phones, I consider myself a bit more than a casual user and so far have been impressed by the keyboard and the screen, both of which I thought would have been a problem

Thankfully no major quibbles although the lack of real estate on the screen does make the mapping with Garmin a little tiring – not a show stopper but worth checking before you stump up the readies

My tuppence worth …

I understand that you can use wifi without the sim card, but is it possible to keep the sim card in the device and use free wifi without being charged for the data plan? Or do you have to remove sim card for free wifi?

Thanks

May 13, 2009

Matthew, thanks for all the neat tips you have put together for the E71x. I have installed Nokia Email using your instructions and it seems to be working fine. I do have a couple of questions though: 1. There is a new mail notification sound, but I have to go to the email app to see the mail. The Nokia site mentioned that the new mail subject is displayed on E-series phones. Has anyone got this working on the E71x? 2. New messages seem to be somewhat slow in coming in. Is there a setting somewhere on the phone or the Nokia Email website which can be used to change this?

Jason

Marc: Go to Profiles and select “Offline”.

This will turn off the G3 and phone functions, but the wifi will still be usable.

I think that in order to get the rebate from AT&T, you need to sign up for the unlimited data plan so maybe data usage won’t be as much of a concern?

Im guessing that it is not possible to use the At&t wifi network without the sim card (in online mode)?

Dear Narendranatha,

Thank you for your response.

I apologize for the previous misinformation, but the Nokia E71x is not capable of entering letters into the phone number field, except for the P and W, which are used for pauses and waits. These are used for automated systems like voice mail. I understand this is inconvenient, and I apologize. I have forwarded your concerns to the appropriate department, and this feature may be included in future firmware releases. I recommend to check with AT&T for the availability of firmware releases, since the phone has a customized version of the firmware by AT&T. You can reach them at 1-800-331-0500.

If you have any additional questions, please contact us. To ensure proper handling, please continue to use the current subject line.

Thank you for choosing Nokia for your mobile needs.

@Dan – me too, using Gmail Java app and it constantly asks “Allow application to use network and send and receive data”. But this occurs for each email that I attempt to open, so it makes the app kind of useless (well OK, I can scroll thru and read the subjects and start of body without network access). I also only get the option to “ask every time” or “not allow”.

Andy
May 16, 2009

Thanks Jason :) .

Is there anyway of not having voice dialing type as Speaker-independent (automatic) and adding my own voice tags for contacts voice dialing? I used to have this on an old Nokia many years ago and it was great but this new computer generated is horrible.

Thanks.

Matthew,

Regarding my earlier issue with the Sport Tracker software—Over at the Nokia Beta Labs forum http://betalabs.nokia.com/forum/topic/2587 M4rkus suggested that because the E71x runs on s60 version 3.2 to try downloading the software for the E75. I did (I used the US+LTA variant) and it now works flawlessly. Again, thanks for a great site.

Nokia Maps – I was finally able to get it to load by using the 2.0 version for the 6650. I was not able to load the 1.0 version for 5700 – unknown error after it checked certificate validity. Of course the 2.0 version for e71 would then not load, due to missing “base”. Now I have to figure out how to use it. BTW, the refresh speed of Google Maps in satellite view is truly astonishing to me.

Anybody tried the Nokia Maps 2.0 and tried to get a GPS fix? It takes literally FOREVER with my E71x (over 5 minutes although I am indoors next to a window). At least it works.

I find the interface to be quite poky and slow compared to Google Maps.

Also another bug I found is that you can’t type the letter ‘R’ into the search box. It just brings up some menu about changing the view to Map, Map3d, Satellite and such. Can anybody else confirm this?

All in all though, a good deal for something free and useful.

ok I have been messing with trying to use my e71x to simply read my gmail for weeks now. It does not work.

The gmail java app asks if it can use the network every 2 seconds.. The built in mail app doesn’t seem to support gmail. The nokia messaging app downloads and then you end up in the existing messaging app with a new gmail folder… but it doesn’t open mail messages and says it is not setup when I try to send an e-mail. I am not even sure if I am in the new nokia mail program or the ATT branded one? Or what? It is simply too confusing to be reasonable… Useless….

I am tempted to give a full resume to show that I am an experienced computer user/programmer but isn’t the point that you should be able to use these devices without years of experience and in depth education in hacking things..

I do not know if the problems I am having are due to att branding and software changes or nokia. I do not really care. I am a consumer and this product does not do what I want.

Finally, yes I know I am just internet venting…. Your choice of whether to publish it.

Dan, feel free to vent and express your point of view as we support free speech here too :)

The Gmail Java app does have issues and I haven’t used the XpressMail client much (but users report it working with Gmail).

I use the Nokia Email client and experienced the same thing as you until I found out you have to go to the email.nokia.com website and have the provisioned text message sent to your E71x to get the proper client installed and running. I know this is a pain and things should be simpler, but once you do have it running I really find Gmail to be nice on the E71x. I have two accounts running there with Nokia Email just fine.

I am trying to use Nokia OEM HS-47 headset with E71x. This is the recommended headset on Nokia’s website for E71. But when i plug it in to my E71x, microphone or any buttons (call end button) don’t work and sound only comes out of right ear bud. Are there any drivers which need to be installed ? Any ideas ?

I just got a Nokia E71X 2 days ago and love it. When I first downloaded the YouTube app, it worked great- fast with no flaws. But all of the sudden yesterday (24 hours later), it will only load and play certain videos (short ones). I can no longer watch Jeff Dunham videos (e.g. Achmed the Dead Terrorist) or anything of length. I have removed and reloaded the program four times now, storing to my phone twice and memory card twice. It tries to load the video for a long time but then says unable to connect. Any ideas???

I have been looking to buy this phone for awhile. The campus that i live on has free wifi everywhere you go, even blocks away from the campus, even in my apartment. It is nice to have free internet. The nice lady at the AT&T tells me that i have to purchase a data plan for my phone to use wifi… I have read above about working “offline” but I don’t understand how they could be so wrong as to charge ME for using free internet. It is using the properties of the phone itself and has absolutely nothing to do with ‘their’ network. I want to buy the phone, I don’t want their expensive plane, and I don’t want a phone thats going to be a pain to use. Should i get a free phone from them and buy a dang ipod touch or is this AT&T lady just feeding me a line to up her paycheck?

Re: headphone issues, I wrote to Nokia support about this, and here is the reply:

Based on my info E71x is compatible only with so called universal headsets (UHJ) 2.5 mm accessories. Only some Nokia headsets (like HS-49) and other 3rd party headsets using “universal headset” configuration work with the E71x. The headsets targeted for E71 do not work properly with the E71x.

The difference between Nokia 2.5 headset and UHJ is that left side and microphone lines are swapped.

I think this should have been indicated clearly in E71x user guide (maybe it is?).

(I couldn’t find anything even after reading the above.)

In regards to the caller name not being listed when they call, I too am having this issue and it is not because of duplicate numbers for that contact. Does anybody else have any suggestions. My E71x has not displayed one single name in a full week of calls. Otherwise it blows my old Blackjack 2 away. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for all the help! I just got my phone two days ago and today I tried going offline to use wifi. I enjoyed being able to surf, but when shut it down and I turned the phone back on to normal, I got icons showing it was connected to G3, then to GSM, then G3, etc. Finally AT&T came back up and an icon telling me A GPRS or EGPRS packet data connection is available. Did I just do a no-no and get online & charged???? I’m afraid to go offline again!

I have installed nokia messaging and it works, but it is having trouble selecting access points automatically. I use wifi at work and home and if i set it to default , it always prompts to select the available wifi every time it goes to check the email. MFE did not have issues. I have configured MFE to sync with exchange 2007 and it swaps between wifi’s seamlessly. I read about smartconnect on some blogs and how it worked on E71, I was wondering if that will solve the problem and if anybody has tried installing it on E71x and how to download it.

Thanks

I am using MFE on E71x to sync emails from exchange 2007. I have noticed, when ever I receive meeting request and I try to accept them (I get 3 options Accept, Decline, Tentative) , the sender of the meeting gets it as tentatively accepted, even though I chose Accept. Is there a way around it.

Thanks

June 5, 2009

Gary,

Nice AT&T lady last night told me that you do NOT have to purchase a data-plan to buy the E71x or to use the WIFI app.

If you have WIFI at home as a lot do, or as in your case the campus you work on does then you’ll be fine.

I think the AT&T lady is after a few more $$ this month!

June 13, 2009

hello…i seem to be having trouble with my e71x. Maybe someone can help me.

I tried downloading nokia email. I added my yahoo acct. The first time it asked for my username and password. So, I added it. I thought I got it right (bec I downloaded it from my phone), I later on figured out that I didnt because I was only able to access it from my mail folder (folder for text msgs) and didn’t have a separate folder. So, I tried downloading it again by going to their site using my laptop. I got a test msg from them so, I finally got it right and saw the email folder to access my email acct. It works great except, to my surprise, I lost that ‘WLAN SCANNING’ in my idle screen. So, I rebooted and got an error saying this: error in idle screen.

Another one I noticed was that when I view my contacts now, the contacts from my sim card and phone are all listed. So, I went to settings to choose ‘view phone contacts only’, but it just won’t work. Every time I hit the done button, it goes back to the original setting which is ‘view all contacts’

Ohhh geez! All these errors after just wrongly downloading nokia email. Shall I just have it exchanged at at&t? maybe someone can help me with these problems. I don’t know if this is a coincidence or it has something to do with the first nokia email i downloaded and it just messed up the entire system of my phone. I would really appreciate any help from the experts or if any have experienced something close to this..thank u

Great Nokia information site. Purchased e71x (waited so long for this 1..dumped a moto q 9h) and have several comments. THANK YOU for the tip to UPGRADE quickoffice. I too wanted to edit documents on the phone, and was frustrated by all the “ATT LOCKDOWN” hype. I just dont click on or use those icons. an irritating paind, but I just ignore them. On the Nokia MAPS issue…On the Moto Q 9h I had both Live Search and Google Maps (both free) as they had several different minute differences I used depending on where I was. On the E71x, i downloaded Google Mpas and have been using it heavily ever since! Not one problem. I did not load livesearch out of fear that GATES had some hidden counter that would notice a rival to Windows Mobile (Symbian) and crash everything…not confirmed, but didn’t want to go to Gate-er land anymore. Hope this helps. Last point, I too have the problem of inbound calls only displaying the telephone number, and not the contact name. The inbound number is a unique number not duplicated anywhere else. Just FYI and awaiting some resolution. LOVE THIS WEB SITE! KEEP IT UP! Gratefully: The Glide-ster.

Recently got an E71x from Wally World on an upgrade. I agree it’s an awesome phone with one notable exception that I cannot seem to resolve. The volume level for both ringing (MP4 file) and voice. Both settings are set for “outdoor” and the volume levels are set at max. Do I have a bad phone or am I doing something wrong. If anyone has any suggestions they would be welcomed.

I just registered my E71x and find that the available documentation leaves much to be desired. A couple of issues that perhaps you can clairify.

  1. I did not purchase a data plan and am happy to use WiFi when available. Is there any way to absolutely disable data use via ATT network. I have heard that from the phone you have to disable each apps ability to use ATT data and that if you ask ATT to diable it it will apply to all phones on the plan (we have a family plan and one has data on an iphone.

  2. Want to sync phone with outlook 2003 or 2007 (not exchange) on my home PC. Am happy to use cable sync. What is the simplist way to do this? This issue is not addressed in the manual that came with the phone.

  3. The link for getting rid of the Bloatware on the phone was helpful but are there some of those apps I might want to leave on the phone? Can they be reinstalled if I discover I need them? One user commented that after following the directions he ended up with two clock icons on the face of the phone.

  4. Same problem as other user with unreadable clock when screen dims. Any fix for that? Any way to bring up the brightness rather than the two button soft key / function key dance?

Great blog. I hope you or someone comes out with a Nokia smartphone for dummies book. My wife has a iphone and I must say it provides a much more pleasant user experience than the E71x.

Howard, I’m very much a newbie, so someone else may provide a better answer, but for your question #2 I would suggest using the sync program in the Nokia PC Suite, which can be downloaded from the Nokia website (https://www.nokiausa.com/get-support-and-software/software/nokia-pc-suites/compatibility-and-download#11). You can select what you want to sync (calendar, tasks, etc.) and choose to have the sync program load at start-up so it’s readily available when you want it.

More generally, thanks for this website; I'm learning a lot and particularly appreciate the blog on getting rid of ATT bloatware.

I’ve been using E71x for a month now and very happy with it. Thanks Matt for this excellent blog. I have a couple of questions maybe anybody can help. 1. How do I set my connection preference on my phone to ask me which connection i want to use (ATT, Proxyless, or wifi)anytime i use data apps (google, skyfire etc) 2. Whats the latest story on Hulu and Skyfire? Now I can’t watch Hulu on my E71x anymore. Do we have other apps choice for our phone to watch Hulu?

Re: Mail For Exchange upgrade

There is a newer version (2.9.158 S60 3.1 HS)of MFE available than the one that came installed on my E71x. I went to http://businesssoftware.nokia.com/mailforexchange_downloads.php

and selected E71 as the phone type. If you read the Release Notes on the next page, they indicate that this version will work on the E71x.

My questions relate to this from the Release Notes: “4. UPGRADING FROM A PREVIOUS VERSION • If you are currently using any version of Mail for Exchange older than version 2.0.0, you must first uninstall that version and then install the new version”

This from the FAQ document: “2.44 What happens when I uninstall Mail for Exchange? The email folder(s) are deleted. Tasks, calendar and contacts items remain on device. For this reason, the device lock is still enforced after uninstall. To remove the device lock, a factory restore must be performed.”

I’m not currently using device lock, but am a little concerned that, as a newbie, I might get myself into trouble installing this update and perhaps needing to perform a factor restore. Any advice? Thanks for your patience.

Two probably stupid questions:

  1. How do you insert a letter when typing a phone number? (1-800-WDISNEY, just as an example). I know you can do it on a Blackberry but I haven’t been able to figure it out on the E71x.

  2. My notification light blinks for no reason. Sometimes fast, sometimes slow. I have it set to blink for all calls, emails and texts. Could it have something to do with the light sensor – a sort of night light kinda thing?

Thanks for any help.

First of all, thanks for the GREAT website. I’ve had my e71x for just a couple of days now and love it! Found a program for threaded messages that installed with no problem: ultimate sms. It’s a trial version, but so far I’m not sure what it’s missing. It works great..with lots of configuration capability. I’ve seen it for 9.99 and 19.99, and either one would be worth it for me. I got it from http://www.clickapps.com/moreinfo.htm?pid=19532&section=S60V3 but it’s other places as well (cnet, etc.)

Matt, I followed the instruction found on this website for removing some of the AT&T bloatware which included reformatting my sd card. Since I originally installed skyfire on the card(my mistake)I went to reinstall it and can’t. I keep getting an error message telling me “unable to install” after it tells me version .85 is already there and do I want to replaceit with 1.0. Any advice on how to get skyfire back on my phone?

I also had the same problem with voice direction on navigator. i turned them off once and now cannot find where to turn them back on. I assume the talk button is the green phone button but that does not work. AT&T was no help on this.

I’ve owned a Palm for many years before I got my new E71x.

In my Palm contacts, there were available fields for snail mail addresses, which I found to be more than convenient when addressing Christmas cards, etc., but I notice on the E71x, there is only a field available for emails, but not for snail mail addresses;

Am I missing something, or is there another address book or app that includes snail mail addys for each contact?

Maybe if I add my voice to the “squeaky wheel”, Nokia folks will take the time to listen?

I too can not get my contacts’ name to show up when they call – I’ve gone through my entire address book and I did find one duplicate (out of my 255 total) but this doesn’t seem to explain why none of my contacts names show up.

Thanks much for your extensive work!

Hi. I just got my E71x a couple of weeks ago and I love it so far, but suddenly, this weekend, Youtube videos wouldn’t load anymore. I use Media Net and Opera Mini alternately (depending on which one decides to work for the particular application) and some things have always said that Flash Player is required, but everything on Youtube has worked until now. Anybody have any idea as to why it would suddenly stop working (I’m typing this from my phone and everything else seems to be working beautifully right now). Thanks!

In case not yet mentioned here, the fact that a contact shows up as plain number when s/he is calling is owing to duplicate storage of his/her number in your phone book.

go to address book click options-settings-contacts to display- make sure only phone memory is checked- if u have same numbers in phone memory and sim card it fights itself on the ringtones and reverts to default ringtone since the name must be in phone to add personalized ringtone did this on myne and no problems since ringtones work everytime

Matt – great info!

I have an opportunity to get 71 (unlocked) or 71x (from ATT). Which one to pick? Would I miss anything by picking either? I will not be getting the data plan and would like to use the wifi. I just want to be able to sync with my office Outlook (calendar, contacts, tasks) and view/edit documents. Basically, I just want to use it as a basic PDA and go from there.

If I get an unlocked e71, I plan to use the go phone card by ATT or TMobile. So another option is to use an old Sony Ericsson unlocked phone and buy an iPod Touch for all the wifi capabilities. Disadvantage is I will carrying 2 equipments instead of 1 (e71 unlocked).

Once again, great info guys. Keep it up.

CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP ME……I have the following issues that have all of a sudden appeared in the operation of my (what I believed to be an awesome phone) that I have been singing the praises to all of my fellow friends and family. I live in NZ and have had my new E71 for about 5 months now…. without warning these following issues have arisen… Whenever i press the “down” key, it acts as the “select” button even though the select works perfectly fine. whenever i press the space bar, the “@” sign appears. so do the following keys:

“L” key – goes to the calendar

“.” key – the apostrophe sign appears (in text message mode, it acts as the “enter” key and “select” function at the same time

“X” key – types in “zc80″

“W” key – types in “qe2*”

“O” key – acts as the character key and brings up the character display board

I have updated the software as per Nokia’s web site instructions and the details on that are as follows:

300.21.012

18-06-2009

RM-407

Nokia E71-3(317.05)

Has anyone also experienced this if so…….. is there a fix???

After using the Mototola Q for over a year, I switched to the Nokia 71x. After 3 weeks, I changed back. The E71x is a nice phone but, there are differences in the OS I just couldn’t get around. I found myself trying to make it function more like the Motorola Q. The main things were threaded messaging, customizing the main screen, and contact usage. I-Sms was great for messaging. I still have not found a way to customize the main screen. There is a limitation on how much information you can put in the notes of a contact. This final thing caused me to switch back because I need the information. The E71x is still a nice phone but, there are some OS tweaks that could make it outstanding.

Great Blog, thanks Mike and everyone! I have some questions & I will appreciate the help. How do I prevent to access my Google apps through ATT Network?, I want to do it through WiFi (since I do not have a data plan) and since I buy my E71 directly from Nokia to have freedom in that sense. I try Google app in offline mode and it does not work. I was trying to change the access point setting in the app manager but I didn’t found Google app, there was Google Search and Google maps only and I’m cannot even open them. So my 2nd question: What is the meaning when a apps thumbnail is in red and others are in blue in the App. Manager? Thank you.

Matthew,

Despite setting ringing tone in my profile to att.mp3. My NOKIA E71x only rings for contacts I set a personal rintone. When anyone otherthan these call me the phone does not ring. Am I missing something let me know.
