Will we see an Android-based Nokia device announced soon?
I first read on Nokia Mobile Talk (thanks Jorge) and then on the Guardian that Nokia will be announcing an Android-based device at Nokia World in September. The Guardian states their sources as “industry insiders” so I am not sure what that means and I have not seen or heard anything official from Nokia yet. Let’s chalk this up as a rumor for now, but an interesting one at that.
As Jorge listed on Nokia Mobile Talk a Nokia Android device could have some very compelling specs and given the reputation of Nokia phones in regards to phone calls, media capture, and battery life I would be first in line to buy a Nokia Android unit. While an ASeries would be slick I think the more likely candidate for a Nokia Android device is a Nokia Android Internet Tablet.
Android running on the N810 would be a great fit and some have already hacked their N810 to run the Android OS, with mixed results. I enjoy using my T-Mobile G1 and find the Google Android OS to be quite powerful and enjoyable.

I still believe the likely new non-Symbian OS from Nokia will be Maemo. Going Android just does not make sense; Matthew, in the eyes of geeks like you, it may be the smartest move Nokia could make this year, but do you have evidence indicating that Nokia’s reduced smartphone market share is down to its use of Symbian s60 rather than lack of appeal of its current generation of hardware? Was its previously overwhelming dominance down to the superiority of s60? We tend to exaggerate the OS factor most of the time, I think. Besides, I think Android at this stage has only potential:it is yet to be truly tested. At the moment, market sales are driven by allure of a brand rather than the alleged superiority of the OS driving that brand, and that is how it will remain.

As much as I don’t agree with the loss of direction that Nokia has shown as of late; I seriously doubt it will dwell into the Linux code any deeper than with Maemo. Any speculation from insiders or outsiders is pure speculation and wishful thinking; only brought on by the “new” factor that Android and WebOS have brought to the table… Besides, you don’t invest millions in purchasing off all Symbian assets; just to abandon it to other manufacturers. It is more likely that other companies will look further into what Nokia can offer them, and Nokia’s recent aquisitions and expansion is testament of that. For example does: Navteq, Trolltech, OZ messaging, ring a bell to anyone? In my opinion, Nokia is just making sure that it’s software and hardware development and offerings expand beyond it’s own market footprint. A wise business decision in the long run; one that will payoff big time once handset manufacturing becomes a commodity on all levels(basic, smartphones, MID’s)…
It simply won’t happen. With 5th edition still being developed properly (only in a few phones so far), Maemo being worked on and also the amount of money Nokia have invested in Symbian, moving to Android would not be a smart move.

They are more or less betting the farm on Qt, obviously trying hard to put something together with Maemo that will be able to take on iPhone & Android.
However, they are running short of time. As a backup strategy it would seem very reasonable that they have a team working on implementing Android. – Just in case their homebrew effort ends up getting nowhere.

The Android system isn’t complete yet. Also, it is coming from the samge google hacks that give all your private information to the government, unconstitutional. It is the same company that raped Youtube when they bought it, taking YOU out of the tube. I personally don’t want to give them a penny to make them even bigger billionaires than they already are. So Android can kiss my ***.
