SPB TV released for Nokia N900 and Maemo 5

SPB TV released for Nokia N900 and Maemo 5I have been so happy with my Nokia N8 (and Windows Phone 7 device) that I forgot about my Nokia N900. I just received the news that SPB TV is now available for the Maemo platform so I pulled out my N900, charged it up, and installed the new software. It also gave me a chance to update other pieces of software and discover the N900 really is a fantastic piece of work.

SPB TV is the first streaming TV application I have seen for Maemo and with the integrated kickstand on the device it does give you a nice viewing option. SPB TV is available on virtually all of the mobile platforms now and offers some decent content for free. There are actually now more than 150 channels from over 20 countries. SPB Software reported that there are more than 2 million users as well.

As listed in their press release, the main features of SPB TV for Maemo include:

  • Full Screen TV player with picture-in-picture mode
  • Unique TV browser with fast channel launching and switching
  • A wide selection of public live TV channels
  • Integrated TV Guide with a list of current and upcoming TV shows
  • On-screen control panel
  • Video quality switcher
  • Advanced Video Codec support

Most of the stations are foreign stations, but I do enjoy the Christian stations and a couple that have football and rugby coverage. Have you tried out SPB TV and if so, what do you think of it?

Have a Nokia N8 and want to fly?

Have a Nokia N8 and want to fly?I have always wanted to be an astronaut and almost applied for a mission engineer position when I was in the USCG and they were looking for engineering officers, but I really did not want to spend the rest of my life living in Houston. There is no an opportunity for me to get a taste of space with a grand prize of a Zero Gravity Flight through the Nokia N8 Productions contest. I see that this has been going on for nearly two weeks and I just now caught wind of it so I am sorry to all you readers for my tardiness.

If you have a Nokia N8 and want to fly then I encourage you to enter this contest now. If you don’t have a Nokia N8, then you can actually submit your video idea and get a chance for a loaner to use for the contest. I have a couple of ideas for videos and plan to start shooting very soon so keep an eye on that site for my videos and I hope you enjoy them.

Tracy and Matt post a detailed and fair Nokia N8 review

Tracy and Matt post a detailed and fair Nokia N8 reviewIt seems that those who have used Symbian love the N8 while there are many in the media who rarely use Symbian and tend to slam the N8. Thus, I was pleased to read a very fair and balanced review over on Tracy and Matt’s site. Overall, they really liked using the Nokia N8 and pointed out some good apps and aspects of the device to consider.

A part from the 10-second review section that summarizes the article is as follows:

  • Summary: A fantastic new operating system that is a long overdue update for Symbian, the hardware is superb on this phone also and I would have to say that very little disappoints.
  • Best of: Camera, Build Quality, AMOLED screen, Battery life
  • Worst of: OVI Store, buttons a little flimsy, weighty

I have to say I am jealous of those who can use Spotify on their N8 and wish we would get Slacker Radio or even Spotify support here in the U.S.

Deal alert: Nokia N8 available for just $399

Deal alert: Nokia N8 available for just $399Are you looking for a fantastic last minute gift? I just read over on PhoneArena.com that you can get a Nokia N8 on the Nokia USA store for just $399 after the sale and special coupon code. You can see the regular holiday sale price is $449 (down from $549) and then PhoneArena.com stated you can use the coupon code noknow2010 to knock another $50 off the price. $399 is a great deal for the super powerful Nokia N8 and if you were on the fence about picking one up this looks like the time to do it. Shoot, I am even thinking about it for one of my other daughters who is looking for a new device.

Angry Birds Seasons now available on the Ovi Store

Angry Birds Seasons now available on the Ovi StoreI am a big fan of Angry Birds and have been enjoying the Seasons edition on my new Samsung Galaxy Tab. I was pleased to see this version finally come to the Nokia Ovi Store, priced at $1.99. The Angry Birds Season edition is setup like an advent calendar so you can only play the levels up to the day of the month. Thus, Nokia players will now have to play days 1-18 to catch up to the Android and iOS world. I wish there was a way to sync your progress across multiple platforms and I imagine this is something that the folks at Rovio are working on for gadget geeks like myself.

The download is just over 8MB so keep that in mind if you are in a data restricted area with your phone. I installed it on my orange N8 and started playing just a short while ago. The cool thing about this Seasons edition is that it also includes the Halloween edition of the game that I played on my iPad, but did not yet have on my N8.

Anyone else enjoy Angry Birds on their Nokia device?

Nokia delays E7 and confirms 800 employee reduction

I would love to only report good news here about Nokia, but in reality life is not always rosy around the holidays.

I really enjoy using my orange Nokia N8 and have no plans for any other Nokia device until I see something running Meego. The Nokia E7 looks like a very nice alternative with the large QWERTY keyboard, but the lack of expandable storage, 8 megapixel EDOF camera, and larger size don’t have me wanting to make an immediate purchase. It turns out you won’t be able to get one in your stocking this year as Kevin points out that Nokia is delaying the release of the E7 until early 2011.

Nokia pushed back the N8 release to make sure the product was ready to go and honestly it turned out to be a good move as the N8 is an amazing device with just a couple areas where improvements are needed (portrait QWERTY and improved web browser) and we know these are coming with a software update. I enjoyed playing with the E7 at Nokia World, but I have really moved on from using physical QWERTY keyboards and am not sure I want to sacrifice the size and weight to get one again.

I would love to evaluate one and hope Nokia sends me one to use for a couple of weeks. They should know with my track record that I usually buy good devices that are sent to me for review too :)

In other sad news for Nokia this week, theĀ 800 employees previously slated in the Q3 financial report will be let go starting in January with severance packages ranging from 5-15 months salary. While this is sad for those being fired, I think Nokia needs to make these kinds of moves to retain its worldwide smartphone leadership and compete against Apple, Google, Microsoft, RIM, and HP.

Enter the Ovi Daily App 2010 Must Have Apps contest to win a Nokia N8

I LOVE applications and now that the Ovi Store is good on the Nokia N8 I am downloading and purchasing more and more on my device. To celebrate the end of the year and figure out what your favorite Symbian apps are Nokia is holding a fantastic online event called the Ovi Daily App Must Have App of the Year Awards. You can vote for apps in the event from now until 31 December 2010 and by casting your vote you are entering a contest to win a Nokia N8. They will pick from all of those who correctly pick all six winning apps and that device will have those six apps. Check out the contest video below.

Apps are nominated in the following categories: Games, Social Networking, Music, Entertainment, Utilities, and Business & Productivity. Five apps are nominated in each category. I voted for my favorite apps and hope to win a Nokia N8 too.

The winning apps will be announced on 5 January 2011. Keep in mind that the apps for this year’s contest are compatible with Symbian S60 5th Edition devices because that was the main high end operating system this year so you won’t see some Symbian^3 compatible apps. This explains why I did not see Angry Birds in the game category or that would have been the easy winning selection.

Go vote now and good luck everyone. Voting only takes a couple of seconds as you choose your favorite apps in the survey and give them your email address so they can contact you if you win.

No other smartphone today can match the Nokia N8 hardware & functions

No other smartphone today can match the Nokia N8 hardware & functionsI have a rather huge audience over on ZDNet so I posted an article I have been thinking about for a while regarding the Nokia N8 and the fact that Nokia put technology and capability in it that is not matched with any other smartphone today. You can read my uncompromising Nokia N8 article and see some of the idiotic discussions that people make who have likely never even tried the Nokia N8.

I am currently using my Nokia N8 and Samsung Galaxy Tab, both on T-Mobile, and have no plans to change to anything else for the foreseeable future. The Nokia E7 does look sweet and if I do anything it will be move to that and pass my N8 to someone else in my family.

Do you agree or disagree with my take on the fabulous N8 hardware specifications and functions?

Skype for Symbian updated, you can get around Verizon too

Skype for Symbian updated, you can get around Verizon tooI was sent a link to the Skype blog announcing a brand new version of Skype for the latest Symbian phones, including the N8, C7, and E5. I fired up my web browser and went to the skype.com/m website and discovered that the Skype Verizon deal here in the US blocks ANYONE outside of specific Verizon handsets from getting Skype. However, I was not going to stop there and figured out all you need to do is switch your device to offline mode and then use a WiFi connection to go to the Skype site and get the .sisx file to install on your device.

This new version includes Skype’s high quality audio codec, SILK, so calls should be even better than they were before. Here is what is listed on the Skype blog for the updated application:

  • make free Skype-to-Skype calls and IM on 3G or WiFi
  • save money on calls and texts to phones abroad
  • share pictures, videos and other files from your phone
  • easier to add contacts, navigate, add a photo to your profile and set your mood message
  • updated the interface to better fit larger screens

Do you use Skype for Symbian?

Congratulations to Peter, winner of my dark gray Nokia N8!
